perhaps when the USA finally calls for Israel to agree to a ceasefire. As the largest 'aid' providers to Israel they're are one of the few countries that Netanyahu might listen to. So far he's just said that the US backs everything they're doing.

araiwa · 19/05/2021 14:47

When the area runs out of oil or we stop needing it and no-one cares about the middle East?

Ginuwine · 19/05/2021 14:49

You're not being unreasonable for that - although I think we have a few threads on this topic currently, with lots of insight

There are some issues that come to mind for me:

  1. Is the price of remedying the Jewish people's historic suffering, the current suffering of Palestinians?
  1. If so, then do we really expect people who have spent decades upon decades building their homes there, to sacrifice their history? Who is going to communicate that price to those people and have them accept it?
  1. Do we accept that Israeli fear around their borders, is the thing that therefore legitimises annexing houses, building on Palestinian land etc?
HeartBrake · 19/05/2021 15:59

Apparently USA is now trying to call for a ceasefire.

Biden has been very weak and disappointing in his inability to make the violence to stop.

USA have given billions in 'aid' to Israel for its defences, Israel then uses the money to buy weapons and tech off US companies.
USA has a huge bias in favour of Israel, as this arrangement shows. Israel is the largest recipient of US 'aid' in the world. Questions are being asked about this in Congress, there's plenty of Americans wondering why one of the world's most modern, technologically advanced nations, with no poverty or hunger issues, is being given so much 'aid' money.

Interesting opinion piece.

Nonbibblebibble,

That’s very interesting. So USA gives the ‘aid’, for it to be given back to the US economy.

Israel is committing genocide/ethnic cleansing against Palestine. Until the international community acknowledge that & force a ceasefire (Biden needs to grow some balls and back the French UN declaration) then the horror will continue.

Tossblanket · 19/05/2021 16:49

Never I'd imagine.

SnappyMcSnapface · 19/05/2021 16:51

It’s not a cycle of suffering. That suggests that Palestine is subjecting Israel to the same horrors Israel is inflicting on Palestine. That’s not the case. What Israel is doing in Palestine is genocide.

Agreed!

It's effectively "licensed" genocide though due to the historic crimes against Jews and their security concerns, being used as a justification for building over people's communities

There is an interesting piece in the guardian appealing to people of conscience:

It’s all quite depressing.
Interesting articles. Thanks.

Zofloramummy · 19/05/2021 19:04

I am not intelligent enough to unpick the politics, but my option is that one act of genocide against an ethnic nation does not justify the same said nation committing one of their own.

It won't end until there's change in America that pays for the weapons being used. Even Israeli press is calling out the government now.

Ha’aretz is Israel’s most prominent left wing and liberal publication. It’s always been critical of the right wing Netanyahu government - this is not a new development...

They once published an article that argued the ultra-Orthodox Jewish factions in Israeli politics were worse than Hezbollah.

It isn’t representative of the Israeli press as a whole.

LeSquigh · 19/05/2021 22:09

I wish I understood the issues more than I do so I am as far from being an expert as they come but the situation here is an absolute disgrace and I cannot get my head around why the US allow this to continue. It clearly is genocide, Israel are behaving despicably and seem to be able to do whatever the fuck they like. I’m not sure the issues will ever be resolved here and it is unbearable watching this happening.

This is a great book to give you an overview of what has happened over past century.

KaptainKaveman · 19/05/2021 22:29

It's a race based process of annihilation. Just look at the maps and borders. In another 30 years there will be no Palestinian land at all. It will all have been taken from them to give to the Jewish " settlers". All the Palestinians will be refugees. This is an inevitability. All the Israel apologists know this and want it, whether openly like the far right orthodox groups, or secretly like quite a few posters on these threads. The ones who make accusations of anti semitism to the people who call out the apartheid when they see it.

Race based annihilation.

KaptainKaveman · 19/05/2021 22:35

We call out the persecution of the Uighurs by China. When Saddam invaded Kuwait it caused a war. We call out the Persecution of the Rohingya.

But if we challenge Israeli persecution of Palestinians and the systematic theft of their farms, land etc, we are 'antisemitic'.

People who actually believe that Israel is a democracy are deluded.

So true. And excuse my ignorance but was the bible's story, the promised land/Moses, was that the foundation for the creation of the Israeli state in 1948?
