To ask anyone who voted for Brexit to pay my import duty

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:17

I ordered a household item online and paid no attention as to where it was coming from (because I never did before). It turned out it was being shipped from Germany and I have to pay import duty and fees to receive it. WTAF!
I’m just having a rant because I fail to see how our lives have improved after Brexit - and don’t get me started on what my relatives in NI are having to endure. And no, Brexit did not deliver a triumph to the UK on vaccines because we would have been just as free to negotiate their delivery to us within the EU.

So, for anyone who voted for Brexit, have your lives really improved and are you happy that UK consumers now have fewer choices and more expensive ones at that?

So, while this is rather tongue in cheek, here goes:

Yes - YABU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees
No - YANBU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees

Don't be so stupid. Next time check where you're buying stuff from.

mainsfed · 17/05/2021 19:24

Are you the poster who bought that painting from Italy for €800 or something?

I thought this too...

Exactly what I thought.
shivawn · 17/05/2021 19:29

Sorry but these days you have to be a bit more savy and double check where your order is coming from.

amusedtodeath1 · 17/05/2021 19:30

Well either import duty is included in the price or it's not, buyer beware an all that.

CareBear50 · 17/05/2021 19:31

Get over it

Menoismymate · 17/05/2021 19:31

I agree with you OP, but most the people here will tell you to stop buying foreign muck and buy British!!

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:32

As I thought - you completely miss the point. Yes, I should have checked but I doubt this item is available to ship from within UK anyway. My point is, just a short time ago we had the freedom to buy anything from the EU and had no import duty. So are Brexit voters happy to stump up (not for me, obviously)?

Your responsibility to check where it's coming from.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/05/2021 19:33

Oh not this again OP. It’s boring. Order your wanky household merchandise in the U.K., problem solved, lord knows there’s enough of it out there.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/05/2021 19:35

And I am vehemently against Brexit but I’m also not 1000€ buying paintings from Italy either then moaning about the duty on top.

Pottedpalm · 17/05/2021 19:35

😂
mainsfed · 17/05/2021 19:35

This reminds me of when I bought lighting from Light in the Box website years ago. Didn't realise they were based in China, the import fees were £200! More than the bloody lights!

You live and you learn, OP. How have you not learned this after three purchases?

Well said.
accentdusoleil · 17/05/2021 19:38

I'm totally with you OP.

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:38

Only on Mumsnet could something escalate so wildly. My household item that is only available in Germany (because of the designer) has suddenly become a €€€€ painting from Italy. Okayyyy

Does this mean I can ask anyone in my area who voted for labour in the recent elections to pay the increase in council tax? Is this how votes work now?

Brb going to plan what I'm doing with my money 💰

bp300 · 17/05/2021 19:39

I will happily pay your import duty if you sell me your house at an 18% discount to the 2016 price which was what the remainers promised us would happen if we left.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 17/05/2021 19:39

YABU.
This coming from someone who voted Remain.

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:40

AJ, I’m not asking you to pay. But I did not vote for higher import duty and less choice so I presume that anyone who did is happy to?

Person can’t read and wants others to pay for the consequences... mumsnet gold.

ForTheLoveOfWine · 17/05/2021 19:41

YANBU so frustrating!

Clearly people missed the while this is rather tongue in cheek...

EmeraldShamrock · 17/05/2021 19:42

Yabu.
You need to check this before buying.
I now only order from UK sites who pay the duty ot direct from EU.

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/05/2021 19:42

Regardless of Brexit, you need to check carefully where goods ship from. It’s very common for online retailers to pose as being based in the U.K., when actually they ship from China and you pay duty and import.

I really can’t get worked up about import charges. Maybe it will encourage people to buy from UK-based retailers, which is a good thing; maybe it won’t, but it just puts European countries on the same footing as the rest of the world.
