To ask anyone who voted for Brexit to pay my import duty

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:17

I ordered a household item online and paid no attention as to where it was coming from (because I never did before). It turned out it was being shipped from Germany and I have to pay import duty and fees to receive it. WTAF!
I’m just having a rant because I fail to see how our lives have improved after Brexit - and don’t get me started on what my relatives in NI are having to endure. And no, Brexit did not deliver a triumph to the UK on vaccines because we would have been just as free to negotiate their delivery to us within the EU.

So, for anyone who voted for Brexit, have your lives really improved and are you happy that UK consumers now have fewer choices and more expensive ones at that?

So, while this is rather tongue in cheek, here goes:

Yes - YABU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees
No - YANBU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees

I voted Brexit. I just bought a French-made LED gel manicure set that was shipped from France. Took three days to get here. They texted me when it had cleared customs. No extra import duty charged (I guess it was included in the not-very-high price). No dramas at all.

Maybe you're just using rubbish suppliers/websites?

TopBlogger · 17/05/2021 20:35

How much are the fees then?

I'm not offering, just nosey

Why didn’t you get a British one?
ThursdayWeld · 17/05/2021 20:36

They don't exist.

ThursdayWeld · 17/05/2021 20:37

These are lovely eco nail varnishes Smile

Chloemol · 17/05/2021 20:37

Yawn get over it

Bracknellite · 17/05/2021 20:38

ODFOD

Crazyhouse123 · 17/05/2021 20:38

@mainsfed

Are you the poster who bought that painting from Italy for €800 or something?
Was thinking the same!
Pumperthepumper · 17/05/2021 20:38

@ThursdayWeld

They don't exist.
Oh worth voting for Brexit then.
ThursdayWeld · 17/05/2021 20:38

I've been known to drink French wine as well Hmm

DenisetheMenace · 17/05/2021 20:39

Voted remain, would rejoin tomorrow like a shot.

You were daft not to look at where it was coming from and what the duty would be. You’re politically aware so ought to have expected this, surely?
Maybe buy from the UK next time.

ThursdayWeld · 17/05/2021 20:40

You what? What has Brexit got to do with the availability of eco gel nail varnishes? @Pumperthepumper

You’re the one who mentioned it in your post.
TopBlogger · 17/05/2021 20:40

She said quite clearly in the OP it was from Germany, why do people keep saying about Italy Hmm

ThursdayWeld · 17/05/2021 20:41

I mentioned it as it seemed relevant to, you know, the actual thread I was posting on?

gamerchick · 17/05/2021 20:41

Heh I thought the same thing.

I didn't vote because those buttons are not for ruddy polls. But yeah you're BU. You'll have to start paying attention.

So why ask me for the relevance?
tentosix · 17/05/2021 20:50

Blame the EU. They didn't want to give us a decent trade deal as punishment for daring to leave. Seeing the shitstorm that is Europe and the floundering incompetency (usually well hidden in a hundred layers of bureaucracy) in the last year, I'm glad we are out.

How much was the import charge? We pay for American imports, so it's not exactly an unknown concept.

Someone keeps posting with similar rants about import tax on different extravagant items.

First it was a painting.

Then a vase from Italy that was a present for a relative.

Why would they though? We were stupid enough to vote leave, they didn’t owe us anything.
FaceyRomford · 17/05/2021 20:55

Buy British. Problem solved.

TopBlogger · 17/05/2021 20:55

Ah I see! Thanks @sapnupuas

Sillawithans · 17/05/2021 20:59

Are people in the UK always this nice to each other Grin

emilyfrost · 17/05/2021 21:00

@ThankYouHunkyJesus

Don't be so stupid. Next time check where you're buying stuff from.
This.

I proudly voted Brexit and I’m very happy about it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/05/2021 21:02

Basically, what @Saddlesore is saying is that, as far as she can see, Brexit means less choice and/or higher costs, and thinks she is not being unreasonable to be irked by this - and I agree with her.
