To ask anyone who voted for Brexit to pay my import duty

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 19:17

I ordered a household item online and paid no attention as to where it was coming from (because I never did before). It turned out it was being shipped from Germany and I have to pay import duty and fees to receive it. WTAF!
I’m just having a rant because I fail to see how our lives have improved after Brexit - and don’t get me started on what my relatives in NI are having to endure. And no, Brexit did not deliver a triumph to the UK on vaccines because we would have been just as free to negotiate their delivery to us within the EU.

So, for anyone who voted for Brexit, have your lives really improved and are you happy that UK consumers now have fewer choices and more expensive ones at that?

So, while this is rather tongue in cheek, here goes:

Yes - YABU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees
No - YANBU to want Brexit voters to pay your import fees

@Saddlesore

AJ, I’m not asking you to pay. But I did not vote for higher import duty and less choice so I presume that anyone who did is happy to?
And I didn't vote for Labour, so I'm presuming anyone who did is happy to pay my increased council tax?
Mrgrinch · 17/05/2021 19:43

You're being ridiculous.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 17/05/2021 19:43

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Oh not this again OP. It’s boring. Order your wanky household merchandise in the U.K., problem solved, lord knows there’s enough of it out there.
Plenty of stuff you can't get from the UK. I cannot order stuff I want because they literally won't ship to the UK due to the hassle I presume, and I can't blame them. So short of bribing people living in other countries (how would I find anyone anyway) I will either have to get on a plane (not likely for a long time due to the current status of the country) or just go without. So I guess I go without. Because... why exactly?

But hey, at least those pesky EU immigrants can't get in anymore. Phew.

🤮

CherryCherries · 17/05/2021 19:46

What we're you buying from Germany and how much was the import cost?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/05/2021 19:50

Maybe it will encourage people to buy from UK-based retailers, which is a good thing; maybe it won’t

I've just ordered something directly from EU manufacturer because UK retailers nearly tripled the price... Was gobsmacked when I saw the difference

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/05/2021 19:51

@JesusIsAnyNameFree I DO NOT agree with Brexit and did not vote for it, I certainly don’t side with the ‘pesky immigrants’ brigade thank you very much Hmm

But of the shit things to happen to people as a result of Brexit, I guess not being able to easily ship wanky €800 furniture from Germany isn’t really at the top of my list.

Rmka · 17/05/2021 20:02

I'm with you, OP. YANBU.

littlepattilou · 17/05/2021 20:03

All the LOLz. Grin

Saddlesore · 17/05/2021 20:03

Hey Pigeon! Where on earth did you get €800 from? I never mentioned the price.

The site I purchased from had co.uk on its name which is why I didn’t think to look into where the item was coming from and whether it would attract import charges. It’s such a pity to have this extra layer of bureaucracy to go through now. Hang on - wasn’t Brexit going to do away with all the red tape???

YANBU, we’ve lost so much and gained absolutely nothing. And all to appease the egos of a few men, it’s absolutely sickening.

Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel · 17/05/2021 20:07

Unfortunately it’s down to you to check where goods are coming from.

WTF are you going on about?
Pumperthepumper · 17/05/2021 20:08

Brexit @littlepattilou - what’s your issue? Can you argue with that statement?

Missrabbitisbusy · 17/05/2021 20:08

I'd take vaccines over import fees any day at the minute!

anotherwayout · 17/05/2021 20:09

I wanted to order something from Finland last week. I've ordered from the site before and the items cannot be bought in the UK. The order wouldn't go through and when I contacted them they said that since Brexit they will no longer ship here "for bureaucratic reasons".
So I don't even have the option of choosing to pay extra duty/tax. I just can't buy the items full stop.
Maybe I should ask my Dad to cover the cost of me flying to Finland to get them myself, as he voted leave Grin

mainsfed · 17/05/2021 20:09

Ah, my bad it was a €3000 painting from Bulgaria Grin

TillyTopper · 17/05/2021 20:13

I think it's a good thing if it makes people buy British - less environmental impact from transport, more jobs for UK workers.

CherryCherries · 17/05/2021 20:18

How much was the import tax on the item bought?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/05/2021 20:22

Some things aren't sold here. Many aren't made here either. Some other things have a piss taking mark ups. Sometimes if you wnat certain item, you buy from abroad. Same like the abroad was buying from here.
Gymsmile21 · 17/05/2021 20:23

This is the millionth post about it from you.

Grow up!

SweetCaroline895 · 17/05/2021 20:26

@ThankYouHunkyJesus

Don't be so stupid. Next time check where you're buying stuff from.

Brilliant Grin

skirk64 · 17/05/2021 20:26

Don't buy things from abroad, problem solved. Things that can't be made in this country and that are also necessary will be brought in in bulk and can be bought from a UK supplier. It's not that difficult.

It's weird how people can demand that everyone needs to reduce their meat consumption to combat climate change, but at the same time are causing unnecessary shit to be shipped in from abroad.

MyRight · 17/05/2021 20:26

I think the whole point is many who voted for Brexit wouldn’t be buying household items from Germany because that’s where the designer is. I doubt very much they would pay your import tax. Try Wish, that’s cheap and from China Smile

I think the point is the OP didn’t know it was coming from Germany, they didn’t deliberately get it from there because welfare standards make it cheaper to import art, or whatever it is.
