The f**king weather...

I am BU. I know I am. But , here in Wales anyway, for the last 3(?) weeks, it's like mother nature is having a good old laugh going "poor bastards can only meet outside... we'll see about that!!!"

Is it really May or has it been March 2020 this whole time....?
😭😭😭😭

@beardeddragon174 I agree. It's so depressing. Sad

Everything is so far behind too. The VERY dry April, coupled with the coldness (of April, and May so far,) have made the bluebells a month late, and also the blossoms on the trees, and some other Spring flowers.

In addition, the hedgehogs came out of hibernation in mid March (as they usually do,) and then went back after 3 weeks or so, as it got so chilly. And I haven't seen them since! And the cockchafers (May bugs) that always appear late April, and stay for the whole of May, and the first week in June have not yet appeared, there are hardly any bees, and many of my bushes have not started to bloom much yet.

It chilly now, (9 degrees C, but with a wind chill of 6,) and it was thundering about an hour ago. At 6.30pm it started tipping it down with rain.

I think it's something to do with the UK being above the jet stream. If we were below it, it would be like, 22-24 C, and feel like late June/early July!

But yeah, it feels like early March. I am not enjoying it. Sad

We did have a big thunderstorm yesterday too. I do enjoy a good thunderstorm, but I do prefer it when it follows a good heatwave in the summer! Also, that was very sad about that young boy dying, after getting struck by lightning in Blackpool yesterday.

@AnneLovesGilbert
Not sure if this is a typo and you meant to say sun: I want to hide under a duvet till the fucking fun shows its face again.
But it want to hide under a duvet until the sun and the fun show their faces again!

Hmmmm.......

I will lay my own thoughts out, perplexed as I am but following the weather as I always do for my flock and stock. It has been an unusually long, cold, windless, dry Spring for about 8 weeks or so. We saw a single isobar stretched from Malta to Thurso and out to Ireland on many days. Then the wind eventually came. It brought with it the Atlantic moisture via the Caribbean and the land mass of North America, but arced much higher into the polar regions before dumping that water onto us the last few days. So this time it was longer coming and colder when it arrived. We seem to be fed our precipitation more from the north by north west or by north east than the traditional south westerlies now.

That was the same with the beast from the east in 2018. But this year it played out much longer, with a dryness which is not normal in a UK Winter. Climate change is happening and I am now starting to believe that the pace of change in our weather systems will take us by surprise and be tougher than Covid.

MyOctopusFeature · 13/05/2021 19:33

We are six weeks from Midsummer's Day. And we are literally sitting in the middle of an atmosphere of melted ice. But we aren't quite ready to see it yet.

Wannabegreenfingers · 13/05/2021 19:39

It's sh*t. I hate it. Wet, cold and miserable. The 1st person to moan when the temperature goes above 20 is being banished to the North Pole!!

Slippy78 · 13/05/2021 19:47

Didn't we have weeks of snow in May a couple of years ago?

transformandriseup · 13/05/2021 19:48

I feel you. The forecast is rain every days for the next fortnight with highs of 12 degrees.

Most years here it's around 15 degrees by April and last year it was around 20.

I haven't worn a short sleeved top yet this year and I still wear a vest underneath. Plus I usually live in sandals from March onwards but I am still in my boots.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 13/05/2021 19:52

My Timehop keeps popping up with photos from this time last year of DD in the paddling pool, us in the garden in shorts and T-shirts etc but this year there’s been 1 or 2 sunny days in the last month and the rest of the time just a bit shit.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/05/2021 19:54

I'm going out for dinner tomorrow night - I'm literally going to freeze my arse off aren't I? Grin

muddyford · 13/05/2021 19:56

Heating on. Still in winter clothes, whereas every previous year I have got out my summer clobber by the end of April at the absolute latest. We had 26 hours of non-stop rain. This after seeing a hedgehog meandering about the day after Boxing Day 2020.

EducatingArti · 13/05/2021 19:58

I'm telling myself that it absolutely means that August, when I can get proper time off work, is going to be wonderful!

mellongoose · 13/05/2021 20:05

Isn't it because the jet stream is hanging low so we are have the weather that should be in Iceland 🇮🇸?

How do we lure it northwards over the top of these islands and draw up the 3 day heatwave we all live for?!!!

Should we clap for it, do you think?!

TonTonMacoute · 13/05/2021 20:06

I'm in Cornwall OP. I feel your pain!

Justa47 · 13/05/2021 20:07

@beardeddragon174

What it’s May?????? You are joking right?

3CCC · 13/05/2021 20:09

Yanbu
Heating / wood burning fire is on here too

I want it to warm up so I can wear my summer work stuff which is so much nicer to wear.

sqirrelfriends · 13/05/2021 20:09

It's awful, I check the weather and all I see is rain every day.

Some places are predicting a heatwave. I don't want a heatwave, I want normal May weather where I don't fry.

PeskyRooks · 13/05/2021 20:13

Sorry everyone don't want to be a Debbie downer but I've just read that coral the bookmakers have put the odds of this summer being the wettest since records began down to 2-1!
So maybe we need to get our heads around it and think what we're going to do if this is the case, then if it's not true - bonus!! But if it is true then forewarned is forearmed, indoor hobbies, wet weather gear bought, house plants rather than gardening...

This has been the weather on my phone for at least the last 4 weeks. Every single fucking day. It’s really starting to get me down when I open the app up hoping it’s changed! We have had the odd spell of sunshine but not much.

I normally hate the sun but all this rain when we can only be outside is shite.

The f**king weather...
PeskyRooks · 13/05/2021 20:20

@sqirrelfriends ah sorry mate feel a bit bad posting that now...

wobblywinelover · 13/05/2021 20:21

The jet stream needs to do one. It's like october/november weather but with the frustration of thinking that the garden could actually look nice, if I had chance to get out and do a bit to it. Bloody Britain!

sqirrelfriends · 13/05/2021 20:24

Don't be silly @PeskyRooks

Our previous few summers have been lovely. We've got to have bad ones too, or else we might forget that we live in the uk.

Lockheart · 13/05/2021 20:28

@Campervan69

So sick of it. I spent the last month creating a beautiful Mediterranean style patio and its been destroyed this week.
Without being arsey, we don't live in the Med (alas). If you style something for Mediterranean weather when you're in the UK then what did you expect?

The temperatures we're having are not extreme, and currently are in line with the average for May, based on data from 1981 to 2010. In London, the average May max temp is 16.8C, and average May lowest temp is 8C. Tonight we have a low expected of 8C and highs over the next few days of 15C.

We are absolutely slap bang on the average May temperatures. Last year's highs were the extreme - this is normal.

In terms of rainfall, we've had a much drier winter and spring than usual. And it's been sunnier too - April's sunshine hours for the UK were 33% above the average, although April was colder than average.

Lots of people go on about how awful the weather is and how it's worse than ever, but honestly the data does not bear this out. It's not unusually cold for May, it's average.

We have had extremely warm summers and springs recently (remember the week 18C in Feb last year - that was extreme) and I think people have become complacent. It's not usual British weather. This is.

PeskyRooks · 13/05/2021 20:30

Yeah exactly @sqirrelfriends!
Anyway we can handle it we're British fgs! We laugh in the face of shit summers

AgnesNaismith · 13/05/2021 20:31

Do it @beardeddragon174 I think if we all act summer it might happen, fake it until you make it.

There is also a sun dance I like to do which is essentially throwing my arms up in the air and summoning sun rays whilst looking a bit manic. Might work Star
