To store baking trays in the oven?

We have two ovens stacked on top of each other. Top oven is the main one that is used multiple times a day. Bottom oven is used maybe once or twice a week. I cook and bake a lot. As a result we have a lot of cookware, most of which are stored in the kitchen drawers. But there are some things we use regularly (and not regularly) that i keep stored in the bottom oven. Not loads. But 4-5 baking trays of various sizes as well as 3 cast iron pans I use daily.

When the bottom oven is in use the baking trays have to come out and sit on the counter, table or floor. But my husband makes such an ordeal out of this every bloody time. Hugging and puffing saying that storing the extra baking trays in the oven isn't normal and he's never known anyone else who does that. He's only ever lived at home or with me (for 20 years!) I feel like he's making such an issue out of a stupid little thing but he feels that taking the trays out on the rare occasion he needs to use the oven is such a mission.

Does anyone else keep their baking trays in the oven?? Is that weird? Or is he weird? 😂

We are always juggling trays around

I've also made some plinth drawers for trays

Aprilx · 02/05/2021 07:54

I would find it very annoying to have baking trays all over the floor, counter tops and table every time I want to use an oven, I can’t believe the number of people that think this is normal! Our baking trays are in the cupboard beside the oven.

The amount of stuff we have in the big oven: trays, roasting tin, casserole has gradually increased over the last 10 years and is getting a bit annoying. If I were you I would be very open to him building another shelf somewhere in the kitchen, or finding some other solution if he can.

I do, mainly 2nd oven but don't take them out when its in use except to fit food in.

Updatingmywill · 02/05/2021 08:06

@ElleEmDee Plinth drawers! Shock what a brilliant idea! Why did I not know about these earlier?! Now looking into retrofitting plinth drawers ...

Whatkatyforgottodo · 02/05/2021 08:09

I do too! And use the oven to dry them after washing them! 😂

HeronLanyon · 02/05/2021 08:10

Plinth drawers are fab however living in a v old house I do think ‘mouse’ irrationally. If I do have any mouse under cabinets (not aware but wouldn’t rule it out) then may as well deal with that before retro fitting.

Confusedandshaken · 02/05/2021 08:12

If he doesn't want them there why doesn't he store them somewhere else?

ibblebibbledibble · 02/05/2021 08:13

No, that would drive me crazy taking them out every time! Our kitchen is tiny too so would use up too much space to have them sat on the side.

SimonJT · 02/05/2021 08:14

I don’t as they get dirty/greasy if you leave them in the oven while cooking, or you end up with oven trays etc all over the kitchen. I have a cupboard specifically for oven trays, cake tins etc.

Kitkat151 · 02/05/2021 08:14

My mum does this...she doesn’t have much kitchen storage so it makes sense

MuddySocks · 02/05/2021 08:14

I do it all the time

Allthegranola · 02/05/2021 08:17

Absolutely. Cupboard space is at a premium in my kitchen so it just makes sense!

NatMoz · 02/05/2021 08:40

I only have 1 oven but I keep them in there due to the current lack of storage space. This may (or may not) change when we complete our extension and have a fancy new kitchen!

BoringBettie · 02/05/2021 08:50

I store mine in the oven, and my mum always stored her in the oven.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 02/05/2021 08:52

I do this and also leave them in when using the oven. Easiest is best. Tell DH.

aiwblam · 02/05/2021 08:55

It is a normal thing to do. I don’t do it though, I have them standing on their sides on the back of the work surfaces. Not attractive, but I find it practical. Kitchenware is a pain to store.

Anjo2011 · 02/05/2021 08:57

I always used to until there were too many and my husband also decided to store a Pyrex dish in there. When taking the trays out the dish fell off and smashed the oven door. We stopped after that.
We now have a new kitchen with storage above and below and trays and bake wear are stored under and above. I also got rid of loads that I just didn’t use and was keeping ‘just in case’ I needed it. Using the kitchen is def easier with less stuff.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/05/2021 09:05

Nope. My mother does this and it drove me mad having to take them all out every day.
I now have a lovely new kitchen with enough storage for everything including a drawer under the ovens where all the baking trays and roasting pans live!

Angel2702 · 02/05/2021 09:28

I do we have barely any cupboard space so moved them to the oven. My parents also store trays in the oven.

borntobequiet · 02/05/2021 09:34

I thought everyone did.

Anjo2011 · 02/05/2021 11:16

Just to add my mum stores things in the microwave as well
