To store baking trays in the oven?

We have two ovens stacked on top of each other. Top oven is the main one that is used multiple times a day. Bottom oven is used maybe once or twice a week. I cook and bake a lot. As a result we have a lot of cookware, most of which are stored in the kitchen drawers. But there are some things we use regularly (and not regularly) that i keep stored in the bottom oven. Not loads. But 4-5 baking trays of various sizes as well as 3 cast iron pans I use daily.

When the bottom oven is in use the baking trays have to come out and sit on the counter, table or floor. But my husband makes such an ordeal out of this every bloody time. Hugging and puffing saying that storing the extra baking trays in the oven isn't normal and he's never known anyone else who does that. He's only ever lived at home or with me (for 20 years!) I feel like he's making such an issue out of a stupid little thing but he feels that taking the trays out on the rare occasion he needs to use the oven is such a mission.

Does anyone else keep their baking trays in the oven?? Is that weird? Or is he weird? 😂

DH does this every so often and it drives me bonkers! Every time he does it I put the oven on to pre-heat, then go mad trying to find the baking trays, then realise what he’s done, and have to faff about with oven gloves finding surface space to put them on. And then I have to work out how to put tinfoil on without burning myself. And spend the entire cooking process terrified I’ll forget and pick one up with my bare hands Grin

Just told my husband about this thread... and set him off on his favourite rant!!

He has spent the last few years (while designing our house and new kitchen) saying that we haven't included enough cupboard space and that I'm not allowed to store trays in the oven.

LadyWhistledownsQuill · 01/05/2021 23:22

I do - and because I'm lazy, they invariably stay in there if I'm only using one oven shelf

Lullaby88 · 01/05/2021 23:23

Yep all in my bottom oven. I use the top oven. Very convinient.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/05/2021 23:23

Wading in behind you OP, you are not alone! It's not an ordeal to take them out when you need the oven, but my DH suffers from the same condition as your DH. I just ignore Smile

cupoftea2021 · 01/05/2021 23:27

I do
Usually clean the tray or pan out and put it back in the hot oven to dry and not rust
All depends on your kitchen size and storage.
Those skinny cupboards to store the trays in are great but I like them in the oven at my height & it's habitual.

AlwaysLatte · 01/05/2021 23:29

I've never heard of people doing this! But it seems like a good idea if you don't mind playing move-the-trays every time.

noblegreenk · 01/05/2021 23:31

I only have one oven but keep all of my baking trays in it as we only have a small kitchen. If I didn't keep them in the oven I don't know where I'd put them. I just take them out when I need to use the oven.

AlwaysLatte · 01/05/2021 23:33

We have a narrow cupboard either side of our cooker to take up the space (originally it was an inglenook fireplace). I took a shelf out of one of the cupboards and now all the baking trays stand in there on their sides.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 01/05/2021 23:33

Always done this, had no idea anyone considered this weird.

M0nstermunch · 01/05/2021 23:39

We don't, have 2 ovens. Rarely use the top one but never thought to use it to store trays. They are in the cupboard at the side of the oven

dottiedaisee · 01/05/2021 23:40

All my baking trays are in top oven ..it means they are 100% dry when I use them.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/05/2021 23:40

I confirm you are normal.

It might be nice to store them elsewhere but I haven’t got enough room in my kitchen. I’m pretty sure baking trays’ claim for space is the lowest priority in any kitchen if you can put them in the oven.

Tell DH that when you have the time/money/inclination to redesign a kitchen from scratch with unlimited room and funds, he can ensure appropriate baking tray storage is at the top of his wishlist.

EarlGreywithLemon · 01/05/2021 23:42

My mum does and she only has one oven. They don’t have enough storage space in their kitchen so I don’t think it’s weird at all.

Ellie56 · 01/05/2021 23:44

Yep all the large baking trays and some baking tins are kept in the oven. There's nowhere else to put them.

Your DH is a tit. And weird.

viques · 01/05/2021 23:48

Mine are there too, they are bloody awkward things to store anywhere else as they are all odd sizes that don’t fit in top cupboards and take up useful storage space elsewhere. I do have a funny little mostly useless cupboard that I put the larger cake tins in but it’s a pain to get things in and out of, and anyway baking sheets and the pizza tray don’t fit.

DragonDoor · 01/05/2021 23:48

Apart from a grill tray, I’ve never known anyone to store trays in the oven. I’m with your husband.

Depending on the size of countertops, it could be a bit inconvenient if they are sitting out. Also, I can’t imagine putting them on the floor. That’s just dangerous is it not?

It's just been redone 4 years ago. All handmade custom cabinets and drawers and marble countertops. Looks amazing which I think is partly why he's annoyed he still has to take them out.

But seriously. He'll make an issue out of anything 🙄

I know people do this, but it absolutely makes my skin crawl

Where have you been living lol?

I do. I have a small kitchen so I ended up emptying out my deep bottom drawer and stored most of them in there but there's still a couple in the oven, the ones I use every day just for ease.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/05/2021 23:59

In that case, why didn’t he ensure there was space for them 4 years ago since it bothers him so much?

Is it because it the kitchen is a woman’s domain and therefore your responsibility? In which case, he can stop complaining now whilst simultaneously getting his arse kicked out of the 1950’s.

Or is it just because he likes a whinge? In which case, point out that if that his biggest complaint in life, he has it made.

TableFlowerss · 02/05/2021 00:01

I don’t - mine are kept in the oven/utensils drawer 😂

Crustybreadandbutter · 02/05/2021 00:02

I do. They are not all in there but some are there a lot of the time.

It's because he likes to whinge. Seriously. About everything. 🤦‍♀️
