To think courgettes don't belong on a Sunday roast?

It's my pet hate - don't get me wrong, I like a courgette in a vegetable chilli, or with some other roasted Mediterranean veg, but with gravy on a roast, just no. Is it just me? Or do courgettes belong on a Sunday roast and I'm totally out of touch?

Totally out of touch. But then you eat gravy. And a Sunday roast. 🤷‍♀️

Einszwei · 26/04/2021 15:20

Yanbu - who on earth thinks it would be acceptable?

lilroo87 · 26/04/2021 15:20

I don't think courgettes belong on a roast but then I also don't agree with sweetcorn on a roast. I think both just don't go!!

Boom45 · 26/04/2021 15:21

I love a corgette with my Sunday roast. I roast onions, courgette and carrots and smother em in gravy. Yum

greeneyedlulu · 26/04/2021 15:21

Not my first Sunday roast veg option, I'd prefer cabbage, spring greens or tenderstem broccoli for my green veg on a roast.

Captnip500 · 26/04/2021 15:22

I really wouldn’t fancy courgette on my roast dinner either, OP. So you aren’t the only one who is ‘out of touch’.

I also can’t abide when people put cauliflower cheese on a roast. The cheese sauce doesn’t go with the gravy!

Topseyt · 26/04/2021 15:22

Why don't they go with a Sunday roast?

We used to sometimes have ratatouille with Sunday roasts. There are courgettes in that.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/04/2021 15:24

I think if you're making a Sunday roast in your own home, whatever the hell you like goes with it.

FuckyouCovid21 · 26/04/2021 15:25

No and I agree about the cauliflower cheese on a roast too - yuk. SIL cooked Sunday roast yesterday - her veg was baby corn, spring onions, roasted tomatoes and red peppers. I was very Confused

Pedalpushers · 26/04/2021 15:26

I wouldn't personally but it doesn't offend me.

thisplaceisweird · 26/04/2021 15:27

Agree with you OP. Roasts are for greens like cabbage or cavolo Nero, green beans or root veg. Mediterranean veg not welcome.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 26/04/2021 15:27

If it’s a Greek roast lamb or French style rotisserie sort of meal then it’s fine.

Traditional British Roast? YADNBU.

Yuck.
ChessieFL · 26/04/2021 15:27

I don’t think courgettes really go with gravy so i wouldn’t usually think of them as going with a roast for that reason. I also agree with the pp who said cauliflower cheese doesn’t go with gravy!

I solve this problem by not having gravy on my roast!

DragonMamma · 26/04/2021 15:30

Hell no.

Mediterranean veg do not go with a traditional Sunday roast and I would be a bit Hmm to see them.

Can’t agree with cauliflower cheese though. Cheese and gravy are a winning combination.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 26/04/2021 15:30

I agree about the cauliflower cheese too. We only have it with gammon, breaded fish like lemon sole, occasionally steak or lamb chops but even then it’s a bit heavy and might not “go” well with mushrooms, fries etc.

Tal45 · 26/04/2021 15:33

No courgettes with Sunday roast they just don't work, much too watery, might as well have lettuce. Great in a stir fry but keep summery veg for summery dishes. Wintery dishes like a roast need carrots, brussels, cabbage, beetroot that sort of thing.

Tal45 · 26/04/2021 15:33

Cheese and gravy do go though ask the Canadians - Poutine.

veggiemedley · 26/04/2021 15:40

Two of our local pubs put steamed courgette on their Sunday roast. There's just no need...however those of you saying no to cauliflower cheese on a roast, heathens the lot of you.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/04/2021 15:47

Veg with Sunday roast has to have a sort of al dente crunch texture - beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower - definitely not sloppy squelchy courgette.

Workinghardeveryday · 26/04/2021 15:47

That’s weird. Definitely not on a roast!!!!

Maggiesfarm · 26/04/2021 15:48

@Boom45

That sounds nice.

I love a good roast dinner with lots of different veg.

Gravy, yum!

Bloodybridget · 26/04/2021 15:51

I wouldn't have courgettes (or anything in cheese sauce) with any meal involving gravy.

GintyMcGinty · 26/04/2021 15:54

Corgettes are slimy evil and don't belong anywhere.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/04/2021 15:54

It's all down to habit and tradition. I wouldn't eat cauliflower cheese with anything at all, just by itself. I wouldn't eat courgette with a roast either.

But then again, I didn't eat potatoes with chicken ever (always rice) until I left home. Again, tradition!

Eat what you like. Any veg is good veg if it gets eaten and not left on the side. I quite like hearing what other people like to eat. Grin
