To think courgettes don't belong on a Sunday roast?

It's my pet hate - don't get me wrong, I like a courgette in a vegetable chilli, or with some other roasted Mediterranean veg, but with gravy on a roast, just no. Is it just me? Or do courgettes belong on a Sunday roast and I'm totally out of touch?

YANBU.

Veg on a roast can include things like carrots, swede, turnip, sprouts, cauliflower, parsnips, cabbages and peas- but not Mediterranean veg like courgettes! It doesn’t go.

It’s a good meal for autumn and winter, hence needing winter veg (frozen peas being the exception).

BrownEyedGirl80 · 26/04/2021 15:57

Anyone who would eat that is a dirty bastard

Hobbesmanc · 26/04/2021 15:58

I deffo wouldn't serve courgettes but probably wouldn't serve broccoli or peas either- although I love them all. I have no idea why. I think its because as a child Sunday veg was always some variation of cauli, cabbage, sprouts, carrots, parsnips or swede. Never anything else (maybe leeks?) I vaguely member some watery white sauce dish?

petrocellihouse · 26/04/2021 15:58

Acceptable veg on a Sunday roast, according to the law is...

  1. Carrot and swede mashed
  2. Peas
  3. Broccoli
  4. Roast carrots
  5. Roast parsnips
6.cauliflower (with or without cheese sauce)
  1. Cabbage, but only if it is al dente, and has lots of butter and pepper on.
  2. Sprouts if it is Christmas.

You may pick and choose at will.

Anything else is a crime against nature and contrary to the rules of a Sunday roast.... Grin

Sobloodyexhausted · 26/04/2021 16:00

No it’s not a gravy compatible vegetable. Slightly off topic my dad was once offered a jug of gravy with his fish pie in a pub 😱! That is totally wrong IMO.

Tambora · 26/04/2021 16:07

I'm on the fence here - as a regular vegetable on its own then no, but as part of roasted summer vegetable dish then yes. Not with gravy though, that's just every kind of wrong.

minniemomo · 26/04/2021 16:12

I often cook them, personal preference

PaperMonster · 26/04/2021 16:13

Definitely no courgettes. But cauliflower cheese is fab - but I don’t eat gravy.

CokeDrinker · 26/04/2021 16:14

I had to actually google what a courgette even is. It's a zucchini, lol. I hate zucchini. But then again no one can be bothered going to the energy of doing a roast every week where I am (it's a maybe once or twice a year thing here) so....

I would never have zucchini with a roast, no. To me it's more of a summer thing and doesn't go with a formal roast dinner. But, people have different tastes, so, yeah. I remember my dad liked it, but I thought it had no taste at all, tasted like cardboard. Or maybe it was my parents' cooking. (shrugs) But yeah, nah.

MirandaBlu · 26/04/2021 16:17

They're good roasted, but really need to be prepped and cooked separately (easier with panko/breadcrumbs or similar) and watched as they're very easy to overcook. So maybe not really in the spirit of or practical for a traditional eveything-cooked-together roast. Although nothing wrong with adding them on if you love them.

OpusAnglicanum · 26/04/2021 16:17

Not the point, but why ‘on’ a roast? Never heard that. Is it regional?

EmmaStone · 26/04/2021 16:17

Ha! I love courgettes, and would often have them as part of my Sunday roast veg (I tend to steam a load of different greens together, whatever I happen to have in - yesterday was broccoli, sugar snaps, courgette and spinach).

AlmostSummer21 · 26/04/2021 16:18

No, it's not a gravy loving vegetable!

I love love love courgettes, roasted, steamed etc but not with a Sunday dinner.

Onesnowynight · 26/04/2021 16:24

@FuckyouCovid21

No and I agree about the cauliflower cheese on a roast too - yuk. SIL cooked Sunday roast yesterday - her veg was baby corn, spring onions, roasted tomatoes and red peppers. I was very Confused
That is horrible!! Why o why o why???
CokeDrinker · 26/04/2021 16:26

Broccoli and melted cheese is delicious.

KatherineJaneway · 26/04/2021 16:38

No courgettes don't go on a Sunday roast. Neither does cauliflower cheese, even though I really like it as a separate dish.

Fembot123 · 26/04/2021 16:39

Corgettes can get to fuck and take their disgusting fat bastard brother Marrow with them as well

Fembot123 · 26/04/2021 16:39

Cauliflower cheese goes with roast gammon

Are you American?

It’s always been “courgette” in the U.K. but in the US I always ask for Zucchini.

Ilovelove · 26/04/2021 17:59

I am shocked at the vegetable shaming on this this thread.
Any vegetable any time, any where, with any dinner.

And if you don't have a preference for one or the other don't shout your vegetable propaganda as fact.

What rules - there are no rules!!
Except for celery. There is no room for celery ever.

botanicalart · 26/04/2021 18:12

Corgettes are slimy evil and don't belong anywhere.

Wise words.

Hesma · 26/04/2021 18:16

Sounds a bit odd to me but I’ve never tried it... may find we’ve all been missing out on a culinary masterpiece

Fringeblack · 26/04/2021 18:18

I’m still horrified at the mention of Sweetcorn on a Sunday roast! 🤢

ElderMillennial · 26/04/2021 18:33

YANBU

SemperIdem · 26/04/2021 18:44

Courgettes and sweet corn categorically do not belong on a traditional Sunday roast.

Cauliflower cheese, whilst I absolutely hate it, is a fairly standard roast dinner accompaniment
