To think courgettes don't belong on a Sunday roast?

It's my pet hate - don't get me wrong, I like a courgette in a vegetable chilli, or with some other roasted Mediterranean veg, but with gravy on a roast, just no. Is it just me? Or do courgettes belong on a Sunday roast and I'm totally out of touch?

It’s the gravy that’s wrong. Horrible stuff.

Only if you've been brought up to believe that gravy is something that comes in a jar/tub that you mix with boiling water to end up with a revolting, overly salty vaguely meat-flavoured gelatinous gloop.

Proper gravy made from scratch with the meat juices is heaven. A roast is not enjoyable without it.

Any seasonal veg go with Sunday roasts! Love a big platter of fresh steamed veg: complements the Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes really well. You can just put your gravy on the roasted portion of the meal, you know!

Gravy is wonderful! Made with the meat juices. Yum. A roast dinner would not be the same without it.

Courgette on a Sunday dins? What utter bollocks is this?

Mediterranean roast. Yes.

English roast, no bloody way.

Doesn't the gravy make them soggy?!

Bloodyhellimahippo · 28/04/2021 23:05

They go with pretty much anything as long as they are cooked properly.

@OpusAnglicanum

Not the point, but why ‘on’ a roast? Never heard that. Is it regional?
‘With a roast’ here - from the South East.

I was invited to someone's house 'for a roast' once , they served stuffed marrow, with carrots, broccoli and some of the limpest roast potatoes I've ever eaten. I've never gotten over the disappointment. I like courgettes but wouldn't usually have them on a roast. Sometimes I do a midweek 'roast', a chicken stuffed with garlic, lemon and thyme roasted and a tray of veg (courgettes, peppers, carrots, mushrooms, red onion, new potatoes) with lots of herbs and garlic baked in the oven and I think that's acceptable.

I agree. But to me, that's not what most British people mean when they talk about 'a roast dinner.' Technically it's roasted but it's a different beast altogether.
