To think courgettes don't belong on a Sunday roast?

It's my pet hate - don't get me wrong, I like a courgette in a vegetable chilli, or with some other roasted Mediterranean veg, but with gravy on a roast, just no. Is it just me? Or do courgettes belong on a Sunday roast and I'm totally out of touch?

@Fringeblack

I’m still horrified at the mention of Sweetcorn on a Sunday roast! 🤢
I agree, that does seem odd. Mind you I am not keen on sweetcorn anyway but I've never seen it with roast potatoes and gravy :-).
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/04/2021 22:24

I do love sprouts very much though. I sometimes cook a plateful for me (nobody else is keen) and delicately dip plunge them into Hollandaise sauce. Delicious!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/04/2021 22:25

I like sweetcorn and will eat that quite happily with a roast, but only if there are no carrots. It doesn't go with carrots in my world.

CokeDrinker · 26/04/2021 22:39

@NameChangedForThisFeb21 Australian. It's zucchini in Australia and New Zealand. And Canada.

YouJustFoldItIn · 26/04/2021 22:46

YANBU. Also sweetcorn. Just wrong.

user1493494961 · 26/04/2021 22:50

Can't people just eat what they want?

Cowbells · 26/04/2021 22:51

Normally no. I occasionally do them flash fried in a bit of butter oil and garlic until slightly crispy and caramelised as a side veg. But rarely. Sunday roast is: roast meat, gravy, roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, steamed peas and broccoli.

beepbeepbonk · 26/04/2021 22:52

We do cheesy courgettes instead of cauliflower cheese sometimes.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 26/04/2021 22:55

Courgettes are wonderful with a Sunday roast but only if they are sliced into rings and fried in butter.

Feather12 · 26/04/2021 22:57

I have never tried it, but I don’t see why not. I bloody love courgettes!

Kapalika · 26/04/2021 23:02

My life wouldn’t end with some courgettes, but I wouldn’t choose to have them.

Titsywoo · 26/04/2021 23:03

My mum used to do round thin slices of courgette fried in batter to go with our roast. Seems very odd now but it was actually lovely!

Bathsandnaps · 26/04/2021 23:04

I'm a big courgette fan, but never on a roast with gravy.
Nor baby corn.

That sounds lovely!

@thisplaceisweird

Agree with you OP. Roasts are for greens like cabbage or cavolo Nero, green beans or root veg. Mediterranean veg not welcome.
The only one of those I agree with is root veg. Green beans on a roast, whatever next.
IncorrigibleTitmouse · 27/04/2021 04:20

No, no, no. I’m with you 100%. Carrots, peas, cabbage/spring greens, brussels, broccoli and cauli (no cheese!) are the proper Sunday roast veg!

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 27/04/2021 04:21

Also, I hate courgettes. Same goes for aubergine and mushrooms. Can’t stand the texture.

blubberball · 27/04/2021 04:25

I don't mind them.

suggestionsplease1 · 27/04/2021 04:58

They're acceptable to me with roast chicken! I'll cut them up and roast them together with onions white or red, peppers and vine tomatoes, oil and balsamic vinegar. Drain off the liquid before putting on the plates.

I'll still have roast potatoes, roast sweet potatoes chips, Yorkshire puds and lots of gravy.

I've got the oven on anyway for the rest of it so usually have these Mediterranean veg in the fridge to use up, so might as well chuck them in as well. Then I can add the leftover veg to a pasta dish the next day.

Mandalay246 · 27/04/2021 05:18

Any vegetable any time, any where, with any dinner.

My thoughts exactly - and I'll have gravy on anything at all.

Jekere6 · 27/04/2021 05:30

Courgettes are my favourite veg, but never want to see them on a roast dinner. Cauliflower yes, cauliflower cheese no.

ChippyDucks150 · 27/04/2021 05:35

YANBU op.

Horrible squeaky things, courgettes.

BritWifeinUSA · 27/04/2021 05:40

It’s the gravy that’s wrong. Horrible stuff.

sashh · 27/04/2021 06:03

Anything else is a crime against nature and contrary to the rules of a Sunday roast....

I mostly agree but I think you can experiment with one item at a time eg

Parsnip and potato mash with garlic (and a touch of ginger)

Carrot, swede and sweet potato mash

Swede mashed with cram and crispy bacon

Roast cauliflower
