Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's wedding 😱🥳

Love these movies!

Thought I'd be a good sister to fellow MNers and spread the word Grin

The most important question: which one to watch first?

Was meant to post this in Chat, never mind.

Anyway, I'm off to practice my bogo pogo Grin

Love love love strictly ballroom. Thanks.

Helloandhelloagain · 10/04/2021 00:58

You’re terrible Muriel

FrankiesKnuckle · 10/04/2021 01:13

Love both films, Muriels wedding is just the best!

echt · 10/04/2021 01:20

You would have the trifecta of full cream Aussie goodness if they included The Castle.

Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 01:24

May I also suggest:
Two Hands
The Hard Word
Dirty Deeds
Getting Square
He Died with a Falafel in his Hand
Lantana
Mystery Road

and of course, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The Aussie film industry is criminally underrated in my opinion.

Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 01:25

Sorry not all on Prime but bloody great nonetheless!

I totally agree. Their output is second to none.

They just feel special. I wonder if its because their humour is kinda the same as the British.

Also see 'The Moodys' as a series. So funny and dry and sarcastic.

Love Aussie (and New Zeland) stuff.

IWishIWasABaller · 10/04/2021 01:33

Thanks op two of my favourite movies Flowers

Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 01:46

Ooh, I forgot Jindabyne.

Would Pitch Black count?

For horror, Wolf Creek and Snowtown. Although the latter is one of the few films I've had to turn off, really disturbing. I was in South Oz when it was actually happening in real life.

CloudFormations · 10/04/2021 06:12

Oh I love strictly ballroom! It’s so deliciously camp.

Etherealhedgehog · 10/04/2021 06:19

So for some reason that I fully do not recall, Strictly Ballroom was THE thing to see when it came out and I was in... year 3 Grin I remember bugging my mother for days until she agreed to take me and I'm sure 90% went completely over my head but I was thrilled anyway. Was anyone else really into this film as an 7/8 year old!?

JackieWeaverFever · 10/04/2021 06:27

Yaaaaassss thank you for this.
Strictly ballroom is the best

Jindabyne was the first Aussie film we saw after moving here.

We left the cinema and my DH said: Welcome to Australia.

Not in a good way. It is grim.

He refused to watch Snowtown. It's almost unbearable. The bad guy is compellingly terrible. What I especially admired about the film was that none of was shot on a sunny day.

Another good but horrible one is Hounds of Love.

Queenoftheashes · 10/04/2021 06:35

I’ve already watched SB and Muriel is on watch list. HOW’S YOUR SKIN, FRAN?

echt · 10/04/2021 06:39

I forgot Crackerjack (Netflix right now) and The Dish.

echt · 10/04/2021 06:41

And Glitch - I think still on Netflix.

I love the first season, not least for the achingly lovely evocation of regional Victoria. So beautiful.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/04/2021 06:50

Goldstone is wonderful. Don't know if it's on any streaming services but well worth a watch.

And I agree that Australian film is wonderful. Everything from very dark, arty and weird to ridiculously camp and musical. Really quality films. I'm sure they must make duds but I never see any. Oh actually, ironically Australia! was pants.

ShirleyPhallus · 10/04/2021 06:54

Yes!! Strictly ballroom is bloody brilliant

Aprilx · 10/04/2021 07:02

I remember Muriel’s wedding being quite depressing! I liked the ABBA bits but her poor mother. 😢. It seen the other one.

bumblebeessarecool · 10/04/2021 07:05

I watched Strictly Ballroom at one of the cinemas in Leicester Square and came out and waltzed badly around the square. Fab movie

custardbear · 10/04/2021 07:10

The Dressmaker is my favourite Australian film

Oneeyeopen · 10/04/2021 07:15

Annoyingly since Brexit Amazon prime have restricted me to a handful of films and programmes.
I don't understand how a service I pay for is affected by my living elsewhere.
