Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's wedding 😱🥳

Love these movies!

Thought I'd be a good sister to fellow MNers and spread the word Grin

The most important question: which one to watch first?

“I’M BEAUTIFUL!!!”

PrelovedWithValue · 10/04/2021 07:16

I adore Baz Luhrmann. I'm almost tempted to sign up to prime to watch SB, which is daft as I have it on DVD.

PrelovedWithValue · 10/04/2021 07:18

Annoyingly since Brexit Amazon prime have restricted me to a handful of films and programmes.
I don't understand how a service I pay for is affected by my living elsewhere

Everything they have is licensed, and it depends where they have the licenses for. Netflix are exactly the same.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 07:21

Dressmaker is amazing!

Not a film but TV series and another Australian entertainment piece of gold - Kath and Kim 😍

musicalfrog · 10/04/2021 07:28

Two films I enjoyed while out there - The Wog Boy and Looking for Alibrandi - I've never been able to find since. Loved them though!

And Rabbit Proof Fence is apparently very good but I've not seen it.

The docufilm The Australian Dream is all kinds of wonderful and discomfiting at the same time.

Agree with you about Kath & Kim OP!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 09:04

Rabbit Proof Fence is excellent, if not a bit grim.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 10/04/2021 09:59

Kath and Kim 😍

Also see someone mentioned Glitch, which is fab.

peak2021 · 10/04/2021 10:12

Picnic at Hanging Rock I'd recommend.

OP I suggest starting with Strictly Ballroom.

supercee · 10/04/2021 10:15

@echt

You would have the trifecta of full cream Aussie goodness if they included The Castle.

The Castle is indeed phenomenal.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2021 10:22

Muriels Wedding is incredibly sad, just heartbreaking - the child abuse/neglect, the sexism/patriarchy. It really shows Aussie men in a dreadful light.

I can't watch it now though obviously Toni Collette is just amazing in everything

echt · 10/04/2021 10:31

The Castle is indeed phenomenal

How's the serenity? supercee?

So much serenity @echt

That's going straight to the pool room.

Dugee · 10/04/2021 11:18

Ooh thank you. Might watch those tonight.

Dugee · 10/04/2021 11:19

@Needhelp101

May I also suggest: Two Hands The Hard Word Dirty Deeds Getting Square He Died with a Falafel in his Hand Lantana Mystery Road

and of course, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The Aussie film industry is criminally underrated in my opinion.

Priscilla is awesome.

I'll look up the others, thank you.

Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 11:45

So many great suggestions!

I keep thinking of more...
The Babadook (I LOVE this, the performances are phenomenal and it's got so many layers. Watching it as a mother really got me).

Heavenly Creatures (New Zealand), Kate Winslet's first film and based on a true story.

I would really, really recommend Two Hands. Heath Ledger is amazing in it and it's funny, moving and with one truly 'shout at the screen' moment.

Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 11:50

Oh, and I've not seen it yet but I've heard good things from my brother in Oz about The Dry (great book too).

CounsellorTroi · 10/04/2021 11:53

May I also suggest

Walkabout
Ladies in Black
The Last Wave

and The Cars That Ate Paris. One of the weirdest films I’ve ever seen.

Chanjer · 10/04/2021 11:58

Beneath Clouds for fans of underrated Australian movies Smile

Love almost everything mentioned itt. I think strictly ballroom is quite possibly perfect as far as films go

StCharlotte · 10/04/2021 12:28

@echt

I forgot Crackerjack (Netflix right now) and The Dish.
"Forty four... two fat whores" Grin
MrsMeers · 10/04/2021 12:29

I’d like to recommend The Dish

HUCKMUCK · 10/04/2021 12:30

Amazing! I've been telling adult DD for years she needs to see Muriel's Wedding but we've never been able to find it.

Cadent · 10/04/2021 12:36

I used to love them but both movies have aged badly.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 12:40

Wash your mouth out! The 90's Aussie fringe (you know the permed kind) with blue eyeshadow is a classic look Grin

picklemewalnuts · 10/04/2021 12:41

Excellent! Love Muriel's wedding, and am looking forward to strictly ballroom. Great, thanks for the heads up, OP!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 12:41

I just googled what Paul Mercurio (Scott from Strictly Ballroom) looks like now. I proper had the hots for him when I was a teen in the 90's. Wish I hadn't bothered
