Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's wedding 😱🥳

Love these movies!

Thought I'd be a good sister to fellow MNers and spread the word Grin

The most important question: which one to watch first?

I love Strictly Ballroom (I was going to be given tickets for the musical for my birthday, but obviously with covid that's been put off).

I can't remember much about 'Australia'. I remember beautiful landscapes, gorgeous horses, and feeling like my bladder might actually explode as we passed the two-and-a-half-hour mark...

RiojaRose · 10/04/2021 13:22

Excellent! Thanks OP! I loved Muriel’s wedding but only saw it once, at the cinema. Be great to see it again.
And yes to Kath and Kim. Brilliant show.

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

I just googled what Paul Mercurio (Scott from Strictly Ballroom) looks like now. I proper had the hots for him when I was a teen in the 90's. Wish I hadn't bothered
Noooooooo... why would you do that :( The actress for Fran is the teacher in Dance Acadamy. She's beautiful.

I love Strictly Ballroom (I was going to be given tickets for the musical for my birthday, but obviously with covid that's been put off). Same. Well for Christmas. I asked Mum if she had heard anything about new dates and she doesn't even remember booking it Grin

LightSwitchedOn · 10/04/2021 13:42

The Dry is great, it is still in cinemas here in Oz and regional Vic looks beautiful.

A great Aussie tv show is Utopia, although I think it's called Dreamland in the UK.

Outrageous Fortune and Wellington Paranormal are great kiwi shows. Absolutely love Eagle and Shark, an early Taiti Waitati movie.

Love the castle! The dad is such a lovely man, I would love him to be my dad Smile

Wish I hadn't bothered

So do I 😭

For those who have seen Australia... here's a treat. I'm so bored, I'm so wobble board Grin

PickAChew · 10/04/2021 15:43

The mystery road TV series are on iplayer. Wouldn't mind seeing the films for the back story.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 10/04/2021 15:48

@echt

I forgot Crackerjack (Netflix right now) and The Dish.
The Dish is a fantastic film. Loving this thread!

Ah, the one where Nicole Kidman's face literally doesn't move for the entire film 😁 (I do actually like her as an actress! Not Aussie, but has as anyone seen To Die For?)
DrFoxtrot · 10/04/2021 17:36

Love Muriel's Wedding.

I was secretly hoping someone might mention BMX Bandits Grin.

Premiumtube · 10/04/2021 17:41

Watch baby teeth on Netflix (or might be amazon), a recent aussie film which is brilliant and will have you crying buckets! Starts out a bit weird but stick with it.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/04/2021 18:01

Love this thread! Agree about Baz and Muriel's Wedding and The Dish, and alongside Kath & Kim Grin can I add the (polar opposite in subject and tone!) Wentworth as excellent tv.

poundoflard · 10/04/2021 18:10

Has any one seen Summersault ( or Somersault) can't remember the spelling. I loved that , so moving

And The Castle is brilliant!

NeverSurrender · 10/04/2021 18:10

Argh! I saw the title and though please god Muriel's Wedding! Fab film!

Somersault! I was trying to remember the name of it, thank you. Abbi Cornish at her most luminous.
Needhelp101 · 10/04/2021 18:13

Oh and another comedy horror, Little Monsters.

burblish · 10/04/2021 21:10

@echt - yes, yes, 100% yes! The Castle, Muriel’s Wedding and Strictly Ballroom are probably my three favourite Aussie films of all time!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/04/2021 23:54

I think HowsYourSkinFran will be my next username Grin

I loved Holding the Man too

Nousernameforme · 10/04/2021 23:59

Stick men and what we do in the shadows both New Zealand I think are very good

VienneseWhirligig · 11/04/2021 00:03

Does anyone else remember an Aussie film called Frog Dreaming? We watched it at primary school once in honour of my Aussie cousin who was visiting England and came to school with me for a week. I've never been able to find it since but as a 10 year old I thought it was brilliant.

Imaystillbedrunk · 11/04/2021 00:06

It's been years since I watched The Castle! Is it on any streaming services?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/04/2021 00:12

I've been avoiding posting NZ films because different countries! But Once Were Warriors is great. Very sad and not easy to watch.

RiverSkater · 11/04/2021 00:33

I want to watch one now. But it's too late. I think DD who is 12 might appreciate Strictly Ballroom. Smile

Needhelp101 · 11/04/2021 00:42

Another old New Zealand film and wonderful, The Piano. Remember Anna Paquin getting her Oscar at 11?
