To think it’s about time all women were Ms or Mrs following this plane error

The confusion caused here could have had dire consequences.

Isn’t it about time we dropped the title ‘Miss’ to differentiate between adult women and girls?

Am I being unreasonable?

That's everything to do with the weight entry error and nothing to do with ms/miss. What a crazy system to start with.

YABU. Women should be able to call themselves anything they want. They don’t distinguish between men in any way - they’re all Mr.

I don’t think that’s a good reason. Presumably they can manage when Mister and Master are both shortened to Mr. I do think it would be good if women actively made choices about their name/title, particularly on marriage.

I agree, that's just a stupid system.

YANBU time to remove Miss as an option!

There's like 10 different ways that issue could have been avoided that don't involve further reducing women's choice.

It didn't mention if men were master/Mr in the article I read.

Every plane ticket I've bought, the kids have been Master.
Why cant they use whether the ticket has been bought fof an adult or child? Or do they have a higher average weight for men?

Presuming everyone with 'Miss' is a child makes no sense at all. And even children weigh differently. A baby v a 12 year old etc. Confused

megletthesecond · 09/04/2021 07:42

That's a weird system.
Can't they just go off average weight for age? Surely they they have everyone's DOB.

Report

tendofether · 09/04/2021 07:43

I'd be interested to know if this child/adult weight classification is common. I can think of a few scenarios where it wouldn't be representative even if they had children and adults classified correctly, e.g. school trip of 15 year olds, all children but using the child's weight for each one would underestimate the weight.

Just get rid of titles. What purpose do they serve?

I like being a Miss.

I can’t stomach the way women’s titles are differentiated by marital status and have been Ms since I was 13 as a result.

But I think that airlines should have better (less sexist) and more ‘internationally aligned’ systems rather than their systems dictating to women what they call themselves.

I am more boggled that the adult weight allowance is 69Kg. Not in the average check in queue I have stood in!

Exactly. No IT system should be basing this, or indeed anything else on someone's title. Surely if one weight is allocated to adults and one to children it should base it on their date of birth. Also did nobody do any testing of this new system before it was implemented? If they did surely they would have discovered this? Or did they find it and decide it was OK?

I liked being a Miss and I like being a Mrs, I don't see the drama personally.

I wish we could just have one title for women and one for men. I hate how women are always defined in relation to their Dad (Miss Smith) their husband (Mrs Brown) or their divorce (Ms Brown or Ms Smith).
Seems archaic when the men are just Mr Jones their whole life.

MiaMc · 09/04/2021 07:48

Didn’t they say it happened because the system was calibrated in a country where everyone with the title ‘miss’ is allocated a child weight?
So whichever country that was need to update their system?

Seems like it would be more straightforward to ignore titles & just weigh everyone instead.

They should just weigh everyone. There was a fatal crash years ago due to underestimation of passenger weights.
If you go on a small plane you have to be weighed.

KoalaOok · 09/04/2021 07:49

If they were all called Dr what weight would they have used.

That's a good idea, weigh everyone and their luggafe

I can't help thinking this average weight thing is crazy anyway. Many women weigh considerably more than that and children are heavier too

Ps exh is dr, what do they do then???

nope. It's an automated system that allocates Mr, Mrs and Ms with 69kg and Miss as 35kg.

I wonder what about boys who are routinely Mr though?

But OP is right it is high time women were Ms. (I'm all for leaving off Mrs too)

What's the betting they use a male average weight?
