To give myself a Ponytail Haircut?

My lovely hairdresser isn’t free for another month.

My hair is all one length, aside from a fringe. It’s about bra-strap length. I just want some long layers, and shorter round the front.

I have proper scissors. My hair is thick snd wavy. Should I just do it?

YABU - wait for your appointment
YANBU - hack!

I'm literally here now with my husband trying to fix the mess I made doing exactly this, although my hair is much shorter than yours. Take my advice and wait!

Go for it - what's the worse thing that can happen?
your hair will grow again, if it looks very odd, it'll only be a few weeks til hairdressers are open
& if it's great, think of the savings going forward Grin

@SadSongsAndWaltzes - OH NO!! What happened? How does it look?

OP posts:
Coulddowithanap · 27/03/2021 11:32

Yes why not. I've been doing this for years. Just take a small bit off rather then a few inches, much easier to correct or go shorter.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 27/03/2021 11:32

I've been using clippers on mine - it looks fine as long as I don't look at the back if I'm in a lift with mirrors on all sides

I think we need @SadSongsAndWaltzes to give us the answer to that question...

A pony tail hair cut won't take any length off the bulk.

You need to do a two step hair cut for length reduction and feathering at the front.

  1. Do an under your chin cut. Part your hair in the middle, bring it all to the front and tie it under your chin. Then cut this straight across. This will get rid of length but the result is rounded at the bottom rather than straight - still neat and even though.
  1. Do a unicorn cut but just a bit. Unicorn pony on your forehead and take an inch off - this will give you feathers round your face.

@Coulddowithanap

Ooh - thanks. I’m confused where to put the ponytail. Some say on the forehead, others say at the top of the head and others at the back.

What’s a ponytail haircut please?

EvilPea · 27/03/2021 11:35

It’s how I cut mine.
I don’t go to a hair dresser. It comes out better than some cuts I’ve had and paid for.
However my hair is long and wavy so very forgiving. If I wore it mostly straight it would be noticeable.

@BurgundyBells

Wow - you sound like an expert! I want one layer of two round the back, then shorter layers at the front. Like a very long Rachel cut.

BurgundyBells · 27/03/2021 11:35

My hair grows incredibly, almost freakishly quickly - so I've experimented plenty over the past years and this two step cut is the best combination I've found.

I tried to add layers and have ended up with basically two very distinct levels Blush. My lovely husband is actually doing a surprisingly good job though! 🤣

ThatOtherPoster · 27/03/2021 11:37

@OnlyToWin

A ponytail haircut is a DIY method where you gather all your hair into a ponytail then hack some off the end. It gives you layers and stuff. I’ve seen some videos where the result is amazing - and others where the person has been in tears 😆.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 27/03/2021 11:38

Although to be fair this wasn't a ponytail haircut, my hair isn't long enough for a ponytail so I tried to cut them in. I won't be doing that again!

I might need his phone number later. Does he do weekend appointments?

Go to a different hairdresser who can fit you in, they’ll still do a better job than you!

of course we do - if we wanted a laugh we'd be pressing for a zoom event🤣🤣🤣

BurgundyBells · 27/03/2021 11:39

With any of the ponytail cuts though, whether under your chin or unicorn, I'd recommend straightening your hair first and spend a LONG time on getting the ponytail perfect, smoothing every hair so it's running the same way etc - if bit of hair is twisted or crisscrossing into the hairband it will give you an uneven result!

LizBennet · 27/03/2021 11:39

I could have written BurgundyBells posts myself, right down to the ridiculously fast growing hair. I use her method, but my hair is naturally curly and I can get away with a few uneven bits, although I’ve pretty much mastered making it look neat.

Good luck OP 😬

Ponoka7 · 27/03/2021 11:40

All I'm saying is that I'm glad it's still windy, so the mess I made of my hair a few weeks ago isn't as noticeable. My fringe, supposed-blend-into-longer layers is shocking. I used burgundy bells method. When it isn't windy I tuck the very-uneven length into my coat.

ThatOtherPoster · 27/03/2021 11:41

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay 😆 Well, I never go anywhere with mirrored lifts so I might be ok...
