To give myself a Ponytail Haircut?

My lovely hairdresser isn’t free for another month.

My hair is all one length, aside from a fringe. It’s about bra-strap length. I just want some long layers, and shorter round the front.

I have proper scissors. My hair is thick snd wavy. Should I just do it?

YABU - wait for your appointment
YANBU - hack!

@littlepattilou - It’s a type of DIY haircut where you gather all your hair into a ponytail, then hack it off. It makes the hair fall into layers. Where you position the ponytail decides on the type of layers you get. People are referring to “unicorn” cuts on here, because in those the ponytail is in the middle of the forehead.

It’s good for devil may care types who like hats.

I see now. Thanks @ThatOtherPoster Gorgeous hair btw! Smile

Your hair colour is stunning.

Thank you! I’m a redhead but I recently used a L’Oréal Preference dye, in Mango, which has given it much more oomph.

I have no idea where the ponytail ended up when I created this monstrosity 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

On the strength of this thread I have given myself a lockdown haircut.

Did the unicorn ponytail cut for feathering and under the chin to get some of the back off. Did my fringe too.

I feel like a new woman! Going to MIL for a cup of tea in the garden - will get the truth if it's truly terrible 💗

ThatOtherPoster · 28/03/2021 10:28

@Lellochip - there are no words. (Well, there are, but you seem lovely so I don’t want to say them.)

What happened - did you have to get it cut into a bob? You created a full on Michael Bolton moment there. 🤗

@minmooch - yay! Well done you. Glad you’re feeling revamped!

After my (out of character) restraint yesterday, I’ve woken up feeling full-on Scissorhands. I just really want the very front sections feathered out. I keep looking at women on tv and everyone has shorter bits right at the front. How hard could it be? ✂️

@ThatOtherPoster
Ha I thought the same about your colour I was surprised you had dyed it

Taytotots · 28/03/2021 11:15

It works well for me and my daughter but we both have wavy/curly thick hair so unevenness not obvious. Just watch the front - don't cut too much off or layers will be very short and annoying (my daughters are just growing out Blush).

JustSleepAlready · 28/03/2021 11:17

It’s sooo easy to mess up. Hairdressers make it look so simple because they have years of experience to perfect the craft. I wouldn’t do it.

minmooch · 28/03/2021 11:25

A bit windswept now but this is the result

Yep there was no salvaging it - the rest had to come off! Have avoided DIY cuts for years since then, until lockdown forced my hand and I risked it (much more successfully) once.

Framing layers at the front are pretty easy to do though, you can just take little bits at a time until you're happy, I say go for it! I may not be the best person to take advice from Grin

Greenrubber · 28/03/2021 11:57

Think if the money and time you would save not having to go to the hairdresser anymore!

The worst thing that could happen is you end up having to get a Bob! It will grow back

Watch a few videos take your time and do it inch by inch

I mentioned seeing this on YouTube to a friend who runs a salon (this was before lockdown when it was a ‘thing’). She said they yes you can do it but it is always lopsided and she has had to ‘fix’ a few (and people always ended up with much shorter hair than they wanted because of the ‘loo’)

ThatOtherPoster · 28/03/2021 12:02

@minmooch That looks so cute!! I love the layers at the bottom!
