To give myself a Ponytail Haircut?

My lovely hairdresser isn’t free for another month.

My hair is all one length, aside from a fringe. It’s about bra-strap length. I just want some long layers, and shorter round the front.

I have proper scissors. My hair is thick snd wavy. Should I just do it?

Ask him to follow a you tube video. They do work quite well and are a bit more precise.

My husband? YIKES, no. I provoked a blazing row the other day and I’m scared he’d get his revenge!

Looks lovely op

Here's mine. If you look closely in the second picture you can see the difference in length of one bit at the side of my face.

Thank you, everyone! No I’m not having another go. Honestly, I went scissor-happy and found myself with a photo of Jennifer in one hand and the scissors I got from Amazon in the other, about to lop 6” off the front layers. Then I remembered I’m not a celebrity £££ hairdresser and talked myself down.

I’m glad I tried it, but I’m not doing any more.

@Chunkymenrock - we definitely need photos of you doing it though!

@OwlInAnOakTree that looks great! You’ve got gorgeous hair.

I wouldn’t want quite that much of a difference between the front length and the back. I just wanted a bit shorter on the top layer, and the very front bits.

Won't let me post the second pic for some reason, but anyway, it wasn't awful...

ThatOtherPoster · 27/03/2021 16:35

Go on, you've seen nothing terrible happens!

😆 I love your enthusiasm. I’ll definitely ask you for encouragement when I’m going other scary things but not ones that involve scissors.

Thank you. And no, I didn't want that much of a difference between the front length and back either... Grin But perfectly fine for the school run and working from home.

I need to research that under the chin approach more to try and get some length off the back.

Maybe wise to stop yourself from getting too scissor-happy.

Do it!!!

viques · 27/03/2021 16:40

@ThatOtherPoster

I’m so confused. My hair appears to have different lengths already, so if I just trimmed 1cm (baby steps 😂) off the longest section of this, where will that shorter bit actually BE when my hair is down???
Until I spotted your eyebrows I thought this was a back view with an extreme undercut. Sorry, as you were.......

If it helps I cut Nicky Next Doors hair, when I was four. Her parents weren’t happy. She was fine about it.

Chunkymenrock · 27/03/2021 16:43

Well done, it looks lovely. I can't seem to load photos, or I would put a before and after on!

gorgeous hair OP

Spermysextowel · 27/03/2021 16:50

I’m encouraged by the OP’s ‘live’ demo to give it a go, but does it work if you have a side parting?

FrankskinnerscRoc · 27/03/2021 17:04

NOOOOOOO! Don't do it OP. Last month I had a go at mine as I couldn't wait until April 12, & was furious that weddings, gym, & church was classed as more important. I was quite excited to begin with & even imagined that I would never need a hairdresser again as I'd simply mastered the art of cutting. My hairdressing career began with the 2 shortest bits at the front & I cut them perfectly straight. Then I did the unicorn thing, the snipping in thing worked rather than a straight cut. It looked OK, until I washed it. So I had to keep trying with the cutting in to try & cover up the fuck up. Sometimes it looks OK, but now my 2 shortest bits at the front seem shorter than ever, then I have long bits, then even shorter bits follow the long bits, no idea how that happened. I guess my pony or unicorn wasn't perfect & I just got over confident. If you've got messy (meow) wavy thick hair you may get away with it, but if it's fine & straight you could end up looking like Roland on Schitts Creek before his hair cut. Hang on in there, only just over another 2 weeks, I can hardly breath when I think of it.

The ponytail haircut explained here:

Apparently you can position the ponytail in the middle or on either side. But I really can’t advise you to do anything as I have even less of an idea how an asymmetrical ponytail cut would work out.

If you want to “feel the fear and do it anyway” then I can recommend @Chunkymenrockfor cheerleading.

I love the unicorn thingy. Haven’t been near a hairdresser since I discovered it.

@ThatOtherPoster

What is a ponytail haircut?

I know what a PONYTAIL is, but not a ponytail haircut!

littlepattilou · 27/03/2021 17:14

I looked at the daily heil link but still can't make sense of it.

Chunkymenrock · 27/03/2021 17:19

I have only just worked out how to do a link. I might yet with the photo...

Chunkymenrock · 27/03/2021 17:21
This is a good video although she does it damp. Dry is better.
ThatOtherPoster · 27/03/2021 17:23

@SilentAlarm

I did mine for years thinking I was making a really great job of it. Decided to go to the hairdresser for the first time in ages last year and I was mortified when she posted the before and after picture on Instagram. My hair was SO uneven before. Literally inches shorter on one side than the other.

Oh no! I hope that hairdresser gave the photos a sensitive caption. Like, “Just tidying up this gorgeous have-a-go heroine’s homemade cut” rather than “LET THIS BE A WARNING”.

That's very helpful. Thank you!

I would never do it personally...
