To give myself a Ponytail Haircut?

My lovely hairdresser isn’t free for another month.

My hair is all one length, aside from a fringe. It’s about bra-strap length. I just want some long layers, and shorter round the front.

I have proper scissors. My hair is thick snd wavy. Should I just do it?

I cut my hair with the help of google, it looks great

Quadrangle · 27/03/2021 12:00
@Quadrangle

I probably wouldn't allow toddler dds to do it.

LOVE your use of “probably” here. 😆 It sounds like you’re only 2 glasses of wine away.
Ha ha. I laughed out loud at that. Dd and I are watching "Killer in my village" so I had to tell dd I was laughing at what I was reading not at the murder.
Don't do it too short or it could end up like this www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2145423/amp/Is-DIY-hairdo-shortcut-disaster-As-women-skip-salon-save-money-brave-volunteer-tries-cutting-hair.html

Quadrangle · 27/03/2021 12:01

PS. Luckily I've not got any toddler dds

homesickinscotland · 27/03/2021 12:01

Think I might give this a go, can't see me getting to a hairdresser for months and I am desperate. My hair is super long and wavy so I feel there's some room for error!

HidingFromDD · 27/03/2021 12:02

take an inch off and see how it looks, it's easy enough to do again if you need it shorter. I did it with mine and it's fine. It is very long now though (nearly waist length) and grows like knotweed so I wasn't too bothered if it didn't turn out great. Make sure you've got proper scissors though. My first try was a fringe cut using the meat scissors from the kitchen - it didn't go well :-)

RoseDog · 27/03/2021 12:05

I use a "creaclip" to give me some layers at the front then dp uses his clippers or scissors to level off the bottom at the back, I think it looks okish but I'm not particular about how I look!

EvilOnion · 27/03/2021 12:05

I haven't quite been brave enough to do my own but I did do my 7 year olds.

We did the unicorn cut making sure to keep the ponytail even - front at bottom, back on top - so it was longer at the back.

It wasn't quite one snip because I did a little at a time but it turned out pretty well with some feathering around her face.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/03/2021 12:06

I might get my DH to learn how to do mine Hmm

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/03/2021 12:08

I’m worried that the pony cut will give me a mullet. My hair isn’t long enough for the under the chin.

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/03/2021 12:09

photo 2 makes me think they cut with the pony tail at the back of the crown, then cut it were the band was.

the cut you are talking about is known as the mumsnet hair cut on here, there are lots of threads about it, with plenty of pics of posters hair after.

I tried it years ago, I didn't like how long it was at the back though.

during lockdown I did a or a bob, were you gather your hair in to a pony tail at the nape of your neck, then pull the band down to which ever length bob you want.
my cut followed about inch under my jaw line down to the front, front being longer and framed my face.

colleagues thought it was great, and have been giving it a go too.

RhubarbAndMustard · 27/03/2021 12:12

I've done the unicorn ponytail method a few times now and has come out fine. Like others have said, it doesn't shorten the back but gives nice long layers round the front.

Wide · 27/03/2021 12:13

Do it!! I once cut mine from waist length to shoulder length

Quadrangle · 27/03/2021 12:14

I used these videos

The second one is the method I used
ILoveMyMonkey · 27/03/2021 12:15

Another unicorn hair cutter here. Never had any problems. Do it dry, make sure the ponytail is central on your head. Use a second band pulled down to the length you want to cut. Use a really sharp pair of scissors and snip it straight across and voila a decent load of layers - I take off about 2 inches but my hair is quite long (shoulder blade length). Start with a little bit and then repeat if you want to take off more. Good luck.

MiniTheMinx · 27/03/2021 12:16

Go for it. Ive done the unicorn hair cut twice this year. I have waist length very thick heavy hair, now have layers and its more manageable. Desperate measures and all that. Its ok. It grows! like a weed in my case.

My issue is doing my roots.....how?

ThatOtherPoster · 27/03/2021 12:17

@NewYearNewTwatName

Yes! The Mumsnet Cut! Thanks, I’ll do a search.

were you gather your hair in to a pony tail at the nape of your neck, then pull the band down to which ever length bob you want.

I am SO tempted to try this. I shouldn’t - I’m trying to move away from a bob- but I really want to. Someone should straitjacket me and remove all sharp objects from my vicinity. It just sounds so tempting.

@Quadrangle - that photo in the Mail of that woman! With the FISTFUL of hair!

My hair is quite forgiving so I’ve backed it a few times. I prefer Brad Munro’s method to just one ponytail

MrsWombat · 27/03/2021 12:18

I've been doing this for the past year, but my hair is really long and I always wear it up so any mistakes probably don't notice. I only do an inch or so at a time.

Quadrangle · 27/03/2021 12:22

@ThatOtherPoster

What I’m hoping to achieve - photo 1.

What I’m scared I’ll actually achieve - photo 2.

If you do the ponytail far forward that shouldn't happen, but you can leave the back out. I've done that
MyGrassIsBrowner · 27/03/2021 12:25

I do the under chin ponytail and I've cut my hair like this for years. I make sure my hair is wet prior and get a really nice even parting and tight ponytail under my chin (you end up looking like a right freak, it's hilarious)

And then gradually chop away making sure your cuts are as straight as you can get. It's never failed me!

Gemma2019 · 27/03/2021 12:26

This used to be called the Mumsnet haircut back in about 2012. Google Mumsnet haircut for a laugh.

I tried it once, like I do most things. Won't be repeating it again.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 27/03/2021 12:27

I will add though, probably not helpful as you're wanting layers and this particular way of cutting hair leaves you with a nice blunt cut. Sorry!

MistyGreenAndBlue · 27/03/2021 12:32

Do NOT cut straight across. This never ends well.
Snip upwards at an angle to soften the layers and avoid that choppy look.
You should definitely look at some tutorials online to get the method.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 27/03/2021 12:32

I got my DH to use clippers with no attachment and just go straight across the bottom.
I'm super pleased with it.
No colour since last March either so I've got a free ombré style now.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 27/03/2021 12:38

I did this a few years ago just because I thought it would work.... I ended up with two hairstyles, a bob and long hair. Went to the hairdresser when I managed to get booked in and arrived with a ponytail. She said what are we doing then? I took my hair down and she said oh wow, you have two hairstyles 🤣🤣🤣🤣
