AIBU to ask for some help planning this?

I've been on mumsnet almost forever, and it's my go-to place for wisdom, help and advice. I don't really have a long time alive, as my cancer treatment has stopped working, so I'm hoping that some of you can help me plan a trip to Anglesey, so that I've seen somewhere that isn't these four walls during my Liverpool Lockdown!

I don't want to go much further afield, as I would feel better being easily accessible to medical care if necessary. The plan is to hire a car with my husband, who'll drive, and stay a night or two in B&Bs, taking in some coastal views and sunsets.

I'd love to trawl antique shops.
I'd like to take the dog, if possible, though this isn't really essential.
Outdoors is good, but I'll have to use a wheelchair for more than short distances.
I like the idea of "hidden gems" in terms of places to visit (who doesn't?) but comfort is good too.
I'll wait for the weather to warm up a bit, so in a few weeks is fine (I hope!).

I don't want to annoy anybody, but I'd like to use this thread for a bit of support and encouragement, and keep bumping it for more ideas and suggestions.so I can make this trip as special as possible. As Anglesey isn't all that far from where I live, I could split the trip into a few parts.

So, can you help? AIBU?

Sorry can't help with Anglesey as I've only driven across in the dead of night for the ferry. But the n Wales is beautiful, I think the snowdon railway can take a wheelchair too. Portmerion is great if you watched the Prisoner.

So sorry to hear your news

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/03/2021 16:31

And the only thing I remember about Anglesey was panicking about no off License being open after we rocked up on a Sunday to get the ferry the next morning after a 5 hour journey with two toddlers

TastybitofSquirrel · 20/03/2021 22:22

Just giving this a little bump. I'd love to follow your journey BOF Flowers

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 05:11

Thank you! I'm looking forward to taking some beautiful photographs and sharing them here.

I spent ages on the Welsh gov site last night, trying to see if there was any possible way that exceptions could be made on compassionate grounds, but I'm coming up empty.

Sorry to read about your diagnosis.
Hope the trip is everything you want it to be.

Oblomov21 · 21/03/2021 05:37

I tried to donate but it won't let me. Is it disabled now? Sad

exLtEveDallas · 21/03/2021 05:52

Sorry @BitOfFun but cases are currently quite high (relatively) in Anglesey at the moment, and H/Head especially. Whilst Drakeford is talking about tentative opening from 12 Apr, I think it might be longer for N Wales. We had planned to visit family at Easter but it looks like we will have to hold off again. You’d be fine on the beaches, but I doubt much else would be open. You may need to start to plan stuff slightly closer to home Sad

@Oblomov21 I think it was closed last week as it had smashed the target.

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 09:16

Yes, it's closed, Oblomov- I can only eat so much ice cream Grin. I am extremely grateful, but I do want to run this thread as more of a chat and some company while I plan some nice stuff to do.

Thanks, LtEve- any info you've got is most handy!

Do you have a possible plan B destination BOF?
Perhaps we could help with that? Somewhere nearer to home that might be open?
I do think that the planning of a trip can be as absorbing and fun.
I used to spend hours researching on tripadviser but haven't looked on there for over a year.

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 11:49

I liked the idea of exploring the Wirral, Skap.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 11:56

And of course there's The Lakes.

I think I'd like to browse antique shops, maybe visit some National Trust places.

Do you think that it's worth me getting us membership if I've got, say, six months?

OP posts:
iklboo · 21/03/2021 14:02

The Lakes is a beautiful area. Lots of gorgeous places in Yorkshire, too.

Skap · 21/03/2021 16:02

Yes I think it's worthwhile, or possibly English Heritage? Although lots of places you can still visit even if not a member.
Much as I like to go abroad I haven't been able to for a couple of years first due to cancer treatment and then lockdown so I've had a few holidays in the UK and really enjoyed them. All Yorkshire or Northumberland though. I agree the Lakes is lovely and plenty to see and do there. Never been to the Wirral I'm afraid.

VivaDixie · 21/03/2021 17:26

I did wonder if you would also consider the Lake District.

Do you think Northumberland may be a little far for you to travel? If you consider that area then I would highly recommend it, I grew up there and one of my most favourite spiritual places is Bamburgh and Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Although it is a good 3-4 hour drive with wee stops!

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 18:07

I'd love to see the treehouses at Alnwick (?), yes. My eldest went to Durham Uni though, so it kind of feels like a waste of a drive if that make sense?

OP posts:
HavelockVetinari · 21/03/2021 18:24

You could stay in a treehouse somewhere? They have some lovely ones you can stay in these days, even accessible ones if your legs are a bit wobbly.

I'm gutted to hear your prognosis Sad I'll start a Novena for you today that my granny says has never been known to fail (Irish Catholics have a prayer for EVERYTHING). I hope you have a good few pain-free months ahead of you at the very least, and that you get up to all kinds of shenanigans, egged on by all of us on this thread SmileWink

jendifer · 21/03/2021 18:30

I’ve “known” you here but also remember the kindness IRO you have shown me and the times I came to visit you in...what was it? 2013?

It’s not Anglesey but how about ironbridge in Shropshire? Not too far? Or the lakes - up to Kendal and a stop at Teabay searvicea?

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 18:34

My mum is on the Novenas too, @HavelockVetinari Grin. Thanks so much Flowers.

@jendifer ,was that around Christmas time? I just wanted to adopt you Grin.

OP posts:
jendifer · 21/03/2021 18:37

@BitOfFun it was 😊 it would have been lovely to be adopted. I’m almost a psychotherapist now so I want to adopt people now

BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 18:38

Because the cancer has spread to my bones, I cant sit down for long periods, so ideally I'll be sticking to within around two hours from home. The South Lakes or the Yorkshire Dales seem achievable, so any suggestions for comfortable S/C accommodation from the 12th of April (squeeeeeeee!) would be very welcome!

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 21/03/2021 18:39

It sounds corny, but I'm bursting with pride for what you've achieved, @jendifer. Honestly, I could cry.

Thanks darling. Thanks for all you did for me too.

I really hope you can find somewhere gorgeous to stay.

iklboo · 21/03/2021 19:06

THIS WEBSITE might have some ideas BOF. They cater for people with disabilities and health needs so they know what places are suited to make sure you're safe, comfortable and have a lovely time.

Yes I totally get this. I grew up there so I would definitely find it a waste of a journey for a bucket list experience. Wink

I find the South Lakes breathtaking so between us all we can find you a real gem.
