AIBU to ask for some help planning this?

I've been on mumsnet almost forever, and it's my go-to place for wisdom, help and advice. I don't really have a long time alive, as my cancer treatment has stopped working, so I'm hoping that some of you can help me plan a trip to Anglesey, so that I've seen somewhere that isn't these four walls during my Liverpool Lockdown!

I don't want to go much further afield, as I would feel better being easily accessible to medical care if necessary. The plan is to hire a car with my husband, who'll drive, and stay a night or two in B&Bs, taking in some coastal views and sunsets.

I'd love to trawl antique shops.
I'd like to take the dog, if possible, though this isn't really essential.
Outdoors is good, but I'll have to use a wheelchair for more than short distances.
I like the idea of "hidden gems" in terms of places to visit (who doesn't?) but comfort is good too.
I'll wait for the weather to warm up a bit, so in a few weeks is fine (I hope!).

I don't want to annoy anybody, but I'd like to use this thread for a bit of support and encouragement, and keep bumping it for more ideas and suggestions.so I can make this trip as special as possible. As Anglesey isn't all that far from where I live, I could split the trip into a few parts.

So, can you help? AIBU?

I don't know if this is too far but this place near Ripon in Yorkshire is fabulous, we stayed there last year. Luxury self catered lodges around a lake. It was blissful.
Ripon is a quaint little market town with galleries and quirky shops.

Just to say sorry you're not well - beautiful painting and photo! Hope you have a fabulous trip

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 11:49

Well, I've managed to book a night in a treehouse near Hereford in about three weeks' time! Will be back later to tell you more once I've had a sleep.

@BitOfFun I'm very sorry about your diagnosis. You won't know me, but I've been on mumsnet for 10 years and always recognise your name.

National Trust membership can be very useful in the Lakes and Northumberland, as they manage a lot of car parks. Members get free parking a lot of the time. That's really why we took out our membership.

Have you looked around Ambleside? I'm just a bit up the M6 from you. It's a very reasonable drive if the motorway is clear.
We've stayed near Keswick, but that might feel a bit far for you.

Yorkshire Dales wise the Skipton area could be a good option, as there is lovely surrounding countryside but it's not too far or remote. We tend to go on the A59 rather than the M65 as it is a lovely route with country pubs dotted along the way if you need a rest from the car.

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 13:46

These are all great suggestions, thank you! The place I've got booked so far looks brilliant. This is my favourite photo from the slideshow Grin.

God above, BOF, that toilet roll holder is a thing of nightmares! (See username)

Herefordshire is lovely - plenty of antique shops for a browse (if stuff opens up). Head to Leominster for loads - nice indie cafes and shops too. Also Ledbury is a lovely high street and cafes.

Berrington & Croft are NT places right by each other - you can do both in a day, and both near Leominster.

Then - if Wales will let you in by then - there’s Hay-on-Wye.

No coast but lovely river scenery at Symonds Yat in the Golden Valley.

Tons of great pubs, most places dog friendly too.

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 15:00

And the book shops! Another of my favourite things!

Super-LOL at your username Grin.

@BitOfFun . Hi sorry to hear your prognosis. Just wanted to ask if you have ever seen the Willy Russell short film about a group of teenagers in the 70s who get taken on a school trip to Anglesey ? It's funny but also a bit sad in parts cos most of the children are from poor homes and this trip is a really big deal for them . As a fellow scouser I thought you might enjoy watching it . You can find it on YouTube.
I have relatives in Anglesey and would recommend Cemaes Bay as a nice place to visit .
The play is called Our Day Out

Fiderer · 22/03/2021 18:47

BoF - another poster who recognises your name from years ago, remember the artwork. And very much appreciated your posts on many topics.

Can't advise re travel but do so love a bookshop. Live abroad and my daughter loves nothing more than anything else (as do I) than going into a proper bookshop when we can "go home" and browsing and smelling. Simple pleasures are often the best.

I wish you all the best in your treehouse Flowers

Another hug from me - haven't a clue about Anglesey but hope the vipers can come up with the goods for you with some brilliant suggestions - they usually do! Grin

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 19:14

Thank you!

We are broadening the search to include anywhere interesting within about a two hour drive from Liverpool, just because it looks like Wales is going to take a while to open up, and I'm not sure how long I've got feeling healthy and ambulant...

Shall I show you this amazing treehouse? Oh yes, I think I will. I phoned this morning and explained our Bucket List quest, and although it was pretty much booked solid, the incredibly nice lady let me have one of the rare single-night slots for a reduced price. I am ridiculously excited. 18th of April, a Sunday night. Not TOO long to wait now...

I love it!

Skap · 22/03/2021 19:40

What about Bakewell? Under 2 hours from Liverpool and very scenic.

SwedishEdith · 22/03/2021 20:01

Oo, if going 2 hours drive from Liverpool, what about Haworth? Or Knaresborough? (Of course, if you've been to the NE quite a lot, you may have been via these places already.)

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 20:04

I will put Haworth on the list, for sure. I have an aunt and cousins close to there too.

I second this - it's also very wheelchair accessible, and has splendid fish and chips as well as lots of delicious cake and nice pubs. Lovely river to walk by and feed the ducks and sharks enormous trout. And it's near Chatsworth which has beautiful gardens and is also v accessible.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 22/03/2021 20:09

Beautiful tree house, how lovely!

Sorry, not read the whole thread so not sure if chester has been mentioned, it's beautiful. I lost my stepmum to cancer beginning of December, she loved chester, wish she could have had one more visit

AlohaMolly · 22/03/2021 20:33

I’ve just found this thread and wanted to add my thoughts and wishes to the crowd. I’ve been here since 2010 and well remember you as a poster I had a bit of a crush on! I’m so sorry about what you’re going through and I hope it’s some comfort, knowing you d touched so many peoples lives.

I work in tourism on Anglesey so as soon as we know more about when we will be opening up, if I can find a suitable property then I promise I’ll get in touch. We’ve got many on our books but I have contacts elsewhere too

peaceanddove · 22/03/2021 20:37

You can hire those little scooters at Chatsworth and most of the formal gardens are on the flat. I can very highly recommend The Devonshire Arms at Beeley for great food and a great atmosphere, and is just around the corner.

Or The Druid at Birchover, it's nothing to look at but the food is excellent and the cook comes out for a chat to find out exactly how you like things cooked. There's usually a real fire too.

BitOfFun · 22/03/2021 20:40

I would really love to see Chatsworth! Good tip on the scooters too.

AlohaMolly, you sound like a brilliant Welsh wingwoman Grin.

@fightingirish and I will certainly be getting together, mind- we may just have to wait a bit longer.
