Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

Another friend worked with Lucy Worsley at Royal Palaces, 'not a team player' I think would be the best way of summing her up.

From my encounter with her, I can completely believe this - part of the dismissive attitude I saw in her was her clear preference for those who she knew came from highly respected institutions, she wasn't keen on giving the time of day to others :/

Blondiney · 16/03/2021 19:28

@BIWI

As is often said here 'anecdotes do not equal data'
Maybe not but they made for an entertaining thread though.

John Cleese was horrible.
David Walliams rips off his mask as soon as he’s off camera, genuinely scary!
Ex met Jimmy Saville as a kid and said he was horrible
Jamie Oliver was the nicest celeb I have ever met, very friendly as was Dermot O’Leary.

Ooh tell us more about Walliams. He absolutely creeps me out. I was also intrigued by someone up thread mentioning a 'quirky' baking presenter as a certain presenter absolutely freaks me out - I can't watch him and I wonder why.
Sidalee7 · 16/03/2021 19:36

His on screen persona is just so fake and an act, he’s actually a really serious, grumpy old git. He’s really clever at playing people and there’s something about him that is off! @cowbells

Whenthesunshines · 16/03/2021 19:37

I know someone who was on a TV quiz show Dale hosted, who said that the minute the cameras stopped rolling he switched off the smiles and was really rude to everyone.

Watching re-runs not so long ago I thought he barely managed to conceal his boredom (and contempt) much of the time.

Whenthesunshines · 16/03/2021 19:37

On the show that is.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/03/2021 19:43

David Walliams makes me shudder!

He is soooo creeeeeepy . . .

Really makes my skin crawl.

I'm glad JO is nice. I didn't used to think much of him until I saw his "how to make edible food out of the stuff in your cupboards" show *at the beginning of lockdown last year - and he seemed really lovely. I completely revised my opinion of him.

*I had to do some adapting - his cupboards had asparagus and octopus and pomegranates, mine had cabbage, tinned sardines and a banana, but that is hardly Jamie's fault.

Grin

I too think there's something unnerving about David Walliams.

Who's the quirky baking presenter? Paul Hollywood's not quirky and he's the only one I can think of.

Shock not Mary Berry?!

Absy · 16/03/2021 20:20

A friend knows Guy Ritchie. Apparently he’s a really unpleasant person to be around.

LadyEloise · 16/03/2021 20:23

@OhCaptain
It always surprises me that Ryan Tubridy didn't build up a bigger career in the UK. He's like a mixture of Terry Wogan, Graham Norton and Henry Kelly.
I think he's a great broadcaster.
Brilliant with children on annual The Late Late Toyshow.
I'd be gutted if it was all an act.

@Fedriteup

Simon Cowell is lovely, has been very financially generous to a good friend of mine. Charm personified according to anyone who has met him.

On the flip side a certain quirky baking presenter made my flesh crawl on several occasions. Letchy, joked about underage girls, insecure, really used people and overall pretty mean in spirit. Appreciate he may have been in a bad place at that point in his life tbf, but made me shudder.

Not Mary Berry, then. Noel Fielding or Matt Lucas? Or Tom Allen? I agree that Paul Hollywood isn't quirky.
RoyalMush · 16/03/2021 20:25

Steven Fry was gushy with the important people and rudely ignored the kids and fans trying to get his attention
Hugh Grant absolutely lovely

RoyalMush · 16/03/2021 20:27

David Walliams gives me the absolute creeps too though I have never met him
I’ve heard Matt Lucas is very nice though

smallandimperfectlyformed · 16/03/2021 20:30

Doversoul sadly I think that the quirky baking presenter being alluded to is Noel Fielding. If it ever turns out to be true I will be so sad, he comes across so well on GBBO.

TaraR2020 · 16/03/2021 20:37

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Shocking things will come out about a couple of names on this thread in years to come when they’ve passed - and yet really, no one will be shocked at all.
Which names @handsoffstrikesagain ?

@smallandimperfectlyformed ditto, but I hope we're wrong!

Literallynoidea · 16/03/2021 20:52

I met Katie Hopkins at a party and she was so nice. Warm, funny, self-deprecating.

On the flip side, I worked with Chris Tarrant once years ago and was so excited about meeting him as he seemed so nice. He was AWFUL. So up himself, rude, arrogant and twattish.

I also know several people who've dealt with Meghan Markle and they echo the points made above about how awful she is.

Surely it shouldn't wait until they're dead, they should be held to account now.

Every instinct in my body tells me that James Corden would be a horror.

NinjaPig · 16/03/2021 21:31

I met David Walliams when I'd won vip tickets to Jack Whitehall's tour and he was really nice to me! Let my husband take a couple of photos and even said goodbye when he went.

Rob Beckett was a bit standoffish, but Jack himself was lovely and Alan Carr is an absolute legend - soo friendly and huggy - love him!

TheLost · 16/03/2021 21:33

Noel Foelding was spotted snogging Pixie Geldof when she was 16 and he was mid 30’s. Always thought of him as a creep since.

Bumblebee1980a · 16/03/2021 21:37

Yes David Dickinson. I use to leave down the road from him. He's a miserable man. Drove a posh car and his lovely wife in a battered mini. I said hi to him (like you do when you walk past someone in the country) whilst walking my dog and he blanked me. He always looked cross and miserable.
