Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

Really annoying that some posters aren't actually giving names, just don't bother 🤷‍♀️

MsAurore · 14/03/2021 16:36

@Bettercallsaul1 @HmmmmmmInteresting

It's called name changing.

I don't care whether or not anyone believes me, it's an anonymous forum and I'm entitled to share my experiences.

I'm sure she has been lovely to some people. But the fact of the matter is that she was unpleasant during this encounter.

Devlesko · 14/03/2021 16:38

Don't know if this counts but my family (direct ancestors) were the real peaky blinders.
The series timing was wrong though it was the 1890's.
They didn't have razors in their caps either. They were real expensive and no way could wc youths afford them.
They were youths too, not grown me.
Apart from this and the Romanian instead of Romany language they got it right Grin

@SplendidSuns1000

I sort of met Kate Winslet and she was a twat. In a park near London with my niece in a pushchair. I was walking on the left side of the path, she on the right. Plenty of space between us (probably a metre) and she said "You really shouldn't bring that into a park, people walk here".

I met Paul Hollywood at a food fair thing when helping a friend run her stall. It was a charity stall and he complained it all cost too much (£2.50 for a cake, £3 for a huge slab of brownie) and told us we shouldn't have bothered.

Stephen Fry however is lovely, he was ahead of me in a queue in a cafe on Christmas eve. He stepped to the side when I was ordering asked if he could pay for my order. We chatted about our plans for Christmas. It was like talking with an old friend.

I don’t understand the Kate Winslet anecdote. What had you brought to the park?
Eckhart · 14/03/2021 16:43

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

A certain one who shares a surname with a film was incredibly pleasant to me, but has form for being v rude

Surely not Sir Ernest Returnofthejedi or Baroness Petunia Herbiegoesbananas?!?! Probably just me, but I haven't a clue on this one - unless we're talking projects and witches....

Laughing at this, as I did exactly the same thought processGrin Grin

@Claricethecat45

Met Noel Edmunds at a sporting event in mid 90's He developed toothache badly and was scheduled to be at the event all weekend so on the Saturday morning the tooth got worse apparently and I ended up driving him to local village dental surgery open on a Saturday morning

He was the rudest person I had met - not a please or thanks for the lift which was requested by event organiser...Noel was with his family and had no 'staff' with him so I was asked to help - arrogant, 'small man' complex dominated.

I don’t know why, but Noel Edmunds always gives me the heebie-jeebies.
hoodathunkit · 14/03/2021 16:48

I met Megan Markle when I was working in retail when she'd just moved to the UK (a couple of weeks before the engagement was announced). She was HORRENDOUS.

I just wondered whether you were familiar with the comedy character Meegan in these sketches

I have a theory about who she is based on

ScribblingPixie · 14/03/2021 16:49

Haha @Elderflower14, my relatives outside London would have been the same. I worked nearby and it was quite something hearing colleagues' stories - one used to say her uncle had all his teeth pulled out by the Krays.

sagaLoren · 14/03/2021 16:49

To balance out my list of "not so nice" (!) celebs I will say that both Michael Palin and Brian Cox are absolutely lovely. You learn a lot about someone by how they treat the "nobodies" (i.e. me) and they were fab.

Er, not sure he's a villain, but Mr. Big (SATC) used to hang out in the Starbuck's near my office (Greenwich Village, New York). He wore a lot of Hawaiian style shirts and used to hit up all the 18 year old university girls at NYU sitting doing their work at the window seats. He was really slimy. Used to see him all the time. I was never a Big fan at all (even though I grew up in that SATC era).

That said, I spent several weeks travelling with Alan Cumming for some charity work he was doing and he is not surprisingly one of the loveliest people I've ever met. He took me out and got us all drunk on martinis and we ran into another (well known but closeted at the time) celebrity. Alan was so lovely and pointed him towards the gay bars in the country we were in (very strict enforcement of anti-gay laws but underground gay scene) without this other person having to disclose too much in front of his minders. He is truly a star.

I've met a famous comedian who everyone seemed to think was such a nice bloke IRL , so I've had the opposite experience. Just like his comedy style, he was an utterly disgusting sexist pig who I should have reported to the police but I was just so shocked it took me ages to process it! He was an associate of a friend and they had some business to arrange, and we were talking to him backstage before a show being held fairly local to us. Funnily enough, she had asked me to accompany her because he gave her the creeps. I had recently had a baby and he stopped talking about the sale of some property and asked if my "mummy nipples" were brown and then grabbed my top and yanked it down over my breasts for a look! His sound guy saw it happen and apologised to me and asked me repeatedly if I was ok. Didn't seem like an event he was surprised by, more shocked to have seen with his own eyes. My friend said she'd conclude through solicitors and we were leaving. The comedian handed me a piece of paper before we left. It was his autograph, which I neither asked for nor wanted!

I often expect to see his name in the paper, being investigated for his actions

RampantIvy · 14/03/2021 16:58

Geoffrey Boycott. He is as obnoxious in real life as his public image.

Who?!?!
sunnydaleslayer · 14/03/2021 16:59

I met Rolf Harris

CroutonsAvatar · 14/03/2021 17:01

I can add that Fearne Cotton is rude unless you’re famous, or was a few years ago.

And not a personal experience, but a long term client of mine worked closely with the Beckhams’ and apparently Victoria was lovely with a filthy sense humour and David was lacking in personality.

CroutonsAvatar · 14/03/2021 17:02

Oh, and Jimmy Carr is really lovely and respectful.

In private perhaps, in public he’s a misogynist arse,
Oooohbehave · 14/03/2021 17:13

@TheLost

My sister went to a birthday party of one of Katie Hopkins’ kids. I went to pick her up afterwards and KH was really friendly and just nice and mumsy. She said that my sister was a really polite young lady and that she could come round whenever she wanted. I don’t know what I was expecting but she was just a completely normal, nice mum.
I assume your DD isn't called Chardonnay or Chantelle Grin

@FuckingFabulous please tell us the name. you can't be sued if its the truth

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 17:14

I would think loads of slebs play up to the villain part in public, and are very different away from the cameras.

Marchhare87 · 14/03/2021 17:15

Nearly 20 years ago, I was working on a photo shoot for a magazine as a lowly assistant. Vinnie Jones was being photographed. He walked in late and went straight into a side room for 20 minutes. Eventually he came out with his heavily pregnant assistant by his side who introduced him to me and the make-up artist.

He said 'Fuck her' to my face and turned to the make-up artist and said 'Fuck her too' and walked off. I've never forgotten it. I was 21, looked about 16 and am very short. He was huge, threatening and a nasty piece of work.

Thankfully the magazine wasn't impressed and refused to run the pictures.

Why would anyone play up to misogyny if they’re not an arse?
CroutonsAvatar · 14/03/2021 17:16

@TatianaBis agreed. And perhaps even then, maybe when it suits. One person’s experience won’t be the full story on anyone.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 14/03/2021 17:17

Rolf Harris.
He came to a university ball. Must have been doing the rounds back in the day as a ‘celebrity guest’. Wouldn’t even give me the time of day. I think he was only interested in talking to the pretty ones. I vaguely remember him telling me to piss off or words to that effect.

Seems unreal now I’m typing this. But I’ve always been sure this happened.
