To think I'm neither gen x or a millennial?

I know, I know; I shouldn't care. But this is the adult version of poring over your star sign.

Apparently gen x is 1965-1980. Then millennials are 1981_ 1995 , or something.

I was born on the cusp. I don't have much in common with x or mill. Kind of a mix of both really. I thought we were called gen y a few years ago, but now that's been given to those born after 1995.

So, I know I'm bu to care, but aibu to not think I'm x or millennial?

@HerculesMulligann yes I don't don't I Grin. There was a thread a while ago about 90s music and another poster said that her life peaked in 1997. I thought it was very apt for me so I nicked it for my username.

I loved nirvana and cried at school the day that Kurt Cobain died.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 28/02/2021 22:03

But 1994 was only yesterday.......

partyatthepalace · 28/02/2021 22:07
@partyatthepalace I hope that’s true about Gen Z in the workplace. As a Gen X forty-something I’m always a bit bemused by some of my millennial colleagues - the idealism, the commitment, the earnestness. It would be nice if there is a generation coming up behind them who are a bit more laidback, a bit more ‘slacker mentality’ maybe.
I dunno if they are slacker, but they are practical, less idealistic and wary - more like us for sure...

TheyWalkAroundInWellies · 28/02/2021 22:50

Wary is a good word for it, I think. Zoomers have been bombarded with all types of information since they were really little and they've had to work smart and fast to figure out what's going on. So they do. Right down to nano language is choice of words, placing of words.

Sometimes they get a bit slick and careless. The alphas coming after them, who have been giving orders to Alexa and tellies etc since before they could write their name, won't be caught on that weak point.

I feel kind of sorry for millennials tbh. A lot of us Gen xers knew early on we'd never have the certainties the previous generation had so adjusted our attitudes accordingly and no one gave much of a shit about what we were doing so we were free to do so. But millennials grew up imbibing the boomer certainties and can't quite figure out how that doesn't work any more.

Literallynoidea · 28/02/2021 22:51

I don't know any millennials who think they're millennials

Coffeeisnecessary · 28/02/2021 22:52

I'm a xennial too, 1981 birth. I definitely don't feel like a millennial, I didn't get a mobile phone until I was 18!!

flakymate · 28/02/2021 22:53

I am also born the cusp of millennial and gen y and definitely relate to gen y more.

flakymate · 28/02/2021 22:58

Millennials are now seen as old by gen y.

I mean, of course people that are 30-40 are seen as old by people in their early 20s and younger. Hell, even people in their late 20’s would be considered old by younger people as it’s a completely different stage of life! There’s a huge gap between people born in early 90s to late 90s, mainly in regard to attitudes to tech and social media

flakymate · 28/02/2021 23:02

Ooops I mean gen z not y - I was born in 1997

NewYearNewTwatName · 28/02/2021 23:16

I've just worked out, that at the company where i work(20+ people) We have the silent generation(although you would never guess I was gobsmacked when I found out her age), GenX, Xennials and older zoomers.

No boomers, or millennials work there!

We have had Millennials in the past but they never lasted long.

One of the Zoomers is one of my bossesShockGrin

Peakedin1997 · 28/02/2021 23:23

My workplace is pretty much generation x now that you mention it. I'm one of the young ones Grin

CorianderBee · 28/02/2021 23:41

I'm a 1995 baby and both millennials and gen z apparently claim me . Some say Zennial but tbh the gen Z TikTok kids make out like everyone over 25 is old so I'll stick with being a young millenial.

Some of us millennials are only around 25 :)
ginandwineandbaileys · 28/02/2021 23:43

I think millennials were spoiled by their boomer grandparents/ parents, their older generation x siblings paved a more liberated path >>> hence their snowflake whiny personalities. The zoomers are the children of generation x, have been brought up to think radically, to not accept inequality, plus have information available at their fingertips, and sm. politicians now find it very difficult to lie, and hide behind personalities. I love my gen z hildren and their friends.

Emmelina · 28/02/2021 23:56

January 81 and feel exactly the same as you, OP!

SleepingStandingUp · 28/02/2021 23:58

I've always been confused I'm meant to be a millennial so I'm off to Google xennial...

lolulop · 01/03/2021 00:00

😆 where is this utopia?

JungOwlWan · 01/03/2021 00:04

i'm gen x but i spent so much of my adulthood worrying about never getting a house that I feel more affinity to articles about millennials.

Not that there are articles about gen xers anymore!
I did used to read douglas copeland and his book about generation x, but at the time, it seemed so American to me. Globalisation wasn't so global back in 1991 or so when I got my first job.

Well they lie, but my zoomer children call them out on sm, with lots of rolling of eyes

I'm generation x and felt life was global during the 90s, it certainly was amongst my friends.
lolulop · 01/03/2021 00:06

tbf I think other generations call them out too perhaps just not so much on social media. I can't remember politicians ever having a reputation for being honest.

Yes I think “Gen X minus gifted deposit equals millennial” stacks up as a calculation.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/03/2021 00:11

Late 81 so Def more Xennial than the other two. I wonder how Gen Alpha will turn out, collectively speaking

To think I'm neither gen x or a millennial?

I have young alphas wonder what the impact of a pandemic will be.
