To think I'm neither gen x or a millennial?

I know, I know; I shouldn't care. But this is the adult version of poring over your star sign.

Apparently gen x is 1965-1980. Then millennials are 1981_ 1995 , or something.

I was born on the cusp. I don't have much in common with x or mill. Kind of a mix of both really. I thought we were called gen y a few years ago, but now that's been given to those born after 1995.

So, I know I'm bu to care, but aibu to not think I'm x or millennial?

Google Xennial!

RickJames · 28/02/2021 00:44

I'm a very late Xer. I have things in common with both. Musically, culturally, I'm very X but have a lot of millennial friends. I prefer Xer culture but I get my millennial friends. X is special, it's a very small group Grin

Spidder · 28/02/2021 00:44

Oh than god, I can sleep at lastGrin

Dh is gen x and proud. He is the dance generation, apparently. But I'm not. I'm not even the grunge generation really, as that was on its way out. Maybe I should just rename it as the 'tfi Friday' generation.

I always think millennial is those born at the turn of the millennium. It confuses me when it's people who came of age (which age? 16?18?21?) Then.

SeasonsInTheAbyss · 28/02/2021 00:47

I’m an Xennial, summer 1983 birth.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 28/02/2021 00:49

Isn't gen Y another term for millennials?

Rhapus123 · 28/02/2021 00:50

Love the Xennial definition: analogue childhood and digital adulthood. Anyone born between 1977-1983 so count me in!

Marzipanfruit · 28/02/2021 00:57

Who the fuck actually cares or takes any notice of these labels?

Spidder · 28/02/2021 00:59

hmmmmmm I thought so too. But apparently gen y is at war with millennial over centre parting and skinny jeans. Millennials are now seen as old by gen y. Whereas I see millennials as ridiculously young.

This is what I get for dipping into random news.

I do like analogue childhood/digital adult. That is totally me.

Well you learn something new everyday .... I've just discovered that I am a relatively early Gen X'er, who knew, definitely not me.

What should/shouldn't I be doing that I have/haven't already been doing? Grin

EggyPegg · 28/02/2021 01:00

I've always felt like this. I think the Xennial definition is perfect.
Summer of '82 here.

Spidder · 28/02/2021 01:02

marzipan I care. That's why I asked. Just like I was once obsessed with my star sign. Grin In an uncertain world, I want to know my label.

Dh reckons gen x sounds coolest, but I like Xennial.

Marzipanfruit · 28/02/2021 01:08

Can I identify as the one I like the sound of most? For the purposes of mumsnet obviously.

Millennials are GenY, they’re at war with GenZ
OppsUpsSide · 28/02/2021 01:13

Technology, and as a result society, has developed exponentially, so the 2 decade classification no longer works. The classification hasn’t caught up.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 28/02/2021 08:01

You're the micro generation Xennial. Usually defined as an analogue childhood and digital adulthood.

CuriousSeal · 28/02/2021 08:32

No, Gen Z is 'at war' with millennials (aka Gen Y).

EggyPegg · 28/02/2021 08:32

Micro generation? Sounds exclusive. I'll take it.

TheMarzipanDildo · 28/02/2021 08:39

I was born in 1999. By some lists I’m a millennial and by some I’m gen z.

I’m sure it’s all bollocks really anyway but here I am, caring. I feel the same way about star signs.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/02/2021 08:50

That's because they are envious we know how to rewind a cassette with a pencil😂
rockingchairhero · 28/02/2021 08:53

Just like a few others have said- it's Gen Z that are at war with millennials (aka Gen Y).

Gen Z are the TikTok generation that are calling millennials old.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/02/2021 08:56

Xennial. It's a thing.

lubeybooby · 28/02/2021 09:00

1980 born and seem to be more Gen X than millennial. Very much the latchkey kid, sort yourself out kind of upbringing. I had my dd when I was 16 in 1996 and she deals with more the issues millennials have

Never looked into Xennial though, off to google!

mnahmnah · 28/02/2021 09:03

1979 born and I’ve always felt the same as you OP!

doctorhamster · 28/02/2021 09:08

I was born in 1980 and very much get what you mean op!
