To think I'm neither gen x or a millennial?

I know, I know; I shouldn't care. But this is the adult version of poring over your star sign.

Apparently gen x is 1965-1980. Then millennials are 1981_ 1995 , or something.

I was born on the cusp. I don't have much in common with x or mill. Kind of a mix of both really. I thought we were called gen y a few years ago, but now that's been given to those born after 1995.

So, I know I'm bu to care, but aibu to not think I'm x or millennial?

@luckynumber

You can't identify out of being a millennial by inventing a new category OP.

I mean I know it sucks being the 2nd most hated generation after the Boomers, but you just gotta suck it up Grin

Agree with this!! Grin

Sorry this thread made me think of this meme.

Monkeytennis97 · 28/02/2021 11:49

Gen X and proud here.

Monkeytennis97 · 28/02/2021 11:50

@CatBumJuice

I'm generation x and having trouble accepting that millennials are adults already...
I hear you. However they are the dominant voice in teaching now. Nod and smile.
lolulop · 28/02/2021 11:57

Die hard is defo a xmas movie!

Quillark · 28/02/2021 12:14

I assumed millennials were born around the millennium 😂 shows what I've been paying attention to!

Tiktokersmiracle · 28/02/2021 12:16

Yeah I'm the same
1982 here
I don't feel very Millennial but then dp is 13 years older so I feel more part of his lot.
Ah well. It's all silly terms that mean not much other than marketing. You are who you are

User133847 · 28/02/2021 13:49

@Ikora

User133847 DH and I both Gen X had access to the internet in 1992 it was the Janet network which was a system only between Universities iand all a bit basic. I do remember being taught how to write web pages back in about 1997.

We do love technology though, he does mathematical modelling as part of his job and I used to teach how to search databases and use the internet when it was in its infancy to first years as a teaching assistant at University. We are tech heads I suppose.

The internet was very niche through the 90s.

I first started using it at school in 1999 for IT lessons in what would have been year 10. It was just starting to take off more in the late 90s, but the might of social media and the likes of Facebook was still years off at that point.

Even back in about 2003 we still had dial up at home and would time out when the phone rang or after 2 hours. It was still quite slow until Broadband really took off.

@JaninaDuszejko

In my office the the gen Zs have taken to ‘Ok boomer-ing’ the millennials - because the millennials are ‘totally unrealistic and idealistic like boomers’ (I am told as a gen Xer who has to break up these disputes). So there we are.

As a solid GenX here I agree that the millenials and boomers share characteristics. That said there's a massive difference between the oldest Boomers (DM and her friends) and the youngest boomers (workmates just a few years older than me) in social outlook.

True. Said Gen Zers tell me they have more in common with us cynical-slacker-McJob Gen Xers then the idealistic millennials. That may be a way to ingratiate themselves with me when I am mid telling them off for being mean, but there IS probably something in it, they have come of age in a brutal time and I find they are overall practical rather than idealistic. Not as cynical as we were, but certainly not as optimistic as the millennials in between.
HerculesMulligann · 28/02/2021 15:40

@partyatthepalace I hope that’s true about Gen Z in the workplace. As a Gen X forty-something I’m always a bit bemused by some of my millennial colleagues - the idealism, the commitment, the earnestness. It would be nice if there is a generation coming up behind them who are a bit more laidback, a bit more ‘slacker mentality’ maybe.

ginandwineandbaileys · 28/02/2021 15:53

I'm generation x, and find millennials are a lot more conservative than me, so I see why zoomers call them boomers.

IEat · 28/02/2021 16:08

I’m just middle aged .. surely a millennial world be born in 2000 ??
I hate all these names for everything

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/02/2021 16:13

I'm a millennial, 30 years old. I don't like the idea of belonging to a "group" as if we're all clones or something. I'm just me.

lockdownalli · 28/02/2021 16:21

www.kasasa.com/articles/generations/gen-x-gen-y-gen-z#:~:text=Gen%20Y%3A%20Gen%20Y%2C%20or,million%20people%20in%20the%20U.S.)

The age groups are in approx 15 - 18 year groups.
Boomers - 1946 - 1964
Gen X (Slackers) were born 1965 - 1980
Millennials (Snowflakes) were born 1981 - 1996, so some of them are now 40.
Gen Z (Woke Generation) Born 1997 - 2012
Gen Alpha 2012 onwards.

TangerineGenie · 28/02/2021 16:21

I tend to think one of the defining things about being a millennial is being priced out of the housing market, which is where I think the age really matters.

I was born 1980 so school friends all born 1979/1980. I'm old enough that friends bought new build houses in 1999 for 35k, and others bought between 2000 and 2005 when 100 & 110% mortgages were a thing so comparatively speaking home ownership not out of reach.

SaskiaRembrandt · 28/02/2021 16:29

@Spidder

hmmmmmm I thought so too. But apparently gen y is at war with millennial over centre parting and skinny jeans. Millennials are now seen as old by gen y. Whereas I see millennials as ridiculously young.

This is what I get for dipping into random news.

I do like analogue childhood/digital adult. That is totally me.

No, no its Gen Z who are at war with Millennials. I don't know who any of these people are though.
SaskiaRembrandt · 28/02/2021 16:30

Also Millennials are at war with Boomers over avocados.

I think I'm Gen X, and as far as I'm aware no one is at war with us because most people forget we exist.

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/02/2021 16:43

I hear you. I am 1964 and don't feel either boomer or Gen X.

ginandwineandbaileys · 28/02/2021 17:27

@SaskiaRembrandt

Also Millennials are at war with Boomers over avocados.

I think I'm Gen X, and as far as I'm aware no one is at war with us because most people forget we exist.

What's wrong with avocados?
ginandwineandbaileys · 28/02/2021 17:28

Does anyone remember yuppies?

Juancornetto · 28/02/2021 17:48

I'm late generation x ('78) but don't feel much in common with supposed millennial characteristics. I'd call myself Britpop generation though, that had the biggest influence on me growing up

HeronLanyon · 28/02/2021 17:48

I was surrounded by them gin. I was one but didn’t behave like one or tried v hard not to. Odious twats often. (Ooer). Strange times.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/02/2021 17:50

What's wrong with avocados?
Everything🤢

sum1980 · 28/02/2021 17:51

Yep, born in 1980......i.e. whose parents were the actual baby boomers so it's really weird that middle-aged people aka me are now called the Boomers. Have to say that I dont feel like I have much in common with younger sibling born in 1988 or with my students born in 2002 so am clearly 'old' now ;-)

I love the Britpop category - but am not sure that anyone even remembers that.

Definitely analog childhood, digital adulthood

grassisjeweled · 28/02/2021 17:53
