To think I'm neither gen x or a millennial?

I know, I know; I shouldn't care. But this is the adult version of poring over your star sign.

Apparently gen x is 1965-1980. Then millennials are 1981_ 1995 , or something.

I was born on the cusp. I don't have much in common with x or mill. Kind of a mix of both really. I thought we were called gen y a few years ago, but now that's been given to those born after 1995.

So, I know I'm bu to care, but aibu to not think I'm x or millennial?

I liked that Irish Times article.

We all remember the torture of having to ring somebody's parents house and then have their mother or father ask ''who shall I say is calling?''. Torture! You had to really like somebody to put yourself through that!

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 01/03/2021 00:26

Interesting - according that table I have 1 x Gen Z & 1 x Alpha. It'll be exciting to see what the world has in store for them & how similarly or differently their lives and opportunities might be.

dayslikethese1 · 01/03/2021 00:46

Not sure I recognise this characterisation of millennials as naive and trusting of politicians! I'm millennial and don't know anyone who trusts politicians or everything they read in the papers. Everyone hates millennials it seems, boomers think we're lazy snowflakes who eat too much avocado toast and gen z apparently think our hair is stupid and we drink too much wine Grin Grin

groovergirl · 01/03/2021 00:53

I think I'm Gen X, and as far as I'm aware no one is at war with us because most people forget we exist.

Ha. I think it's because we are so cool, no one can touch us. Wink X and Z are very compatible, at least in my household. DD (13) and I love perusing piss-takes on YouTube (see How Gen Z Does Protests) and laughed when Donald Trump tried to ban TikTok, the poor ickle Boomer snowflake who felt so disrespected!

By the way, X is not just about grunge and smelly flannellette. We also had sharp tailoring, chunky high heels, the Rachel cut, EDM, acid jazz, Kylie, Jamiroquai, Fine Young Cannibals, Brand New Heavies, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi, Midnight Oil, the swing revival ... quite a mixture, really. And none of my X friends has ever been a slacker. We've all worked hard and long, even as the forces of neo-liberalism pull our jobs from under us.

TheyWalkAroundInWellies · 01/03/2021 00:56

Re trusting politicians, I'm sure you don't but millennials were genuinely responsible for visiting Corbyn upon us ffs. Fucking Corbyn, I ask you.

So yeah the overwhelming impression is : gullible. Sorry as I'm sure it doesn't apply to you personally. But that generation has fucked the Labour party. We used to have fucking Attlee and Kinnock ffs.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 01/03/2021 02:17

I’m Gen X (but I’m not seeing any pictures). Gen Z are the i-generation.

Scalphelp · 01/03/2021 02:37

I was born in 1996 and consider myself gen z, being shoehorned into millennial categorisation annoys meSad

Why is the cut off 1996/1997 rather than 1995? Seems random compared to the rest of the generations ending on round numbers.

My siblings are 6 & 10 years older than me and sorry but we are not part of the same generation (as they like to remind me!) - we had completely different childhoods. I grew up with the internet, social media and tech. I definitely relate to those younger than me than older. I like people my own age the most, think we need our own mini category 👀

lolulop · 01/03/2021 08:13

I know "young" people in general supported him but I'm pretty sure support was strongest for him amongst 18-19 yr olds & reduced as you got closer to 40. Wasn't there talk of lowering the voting age to 16 as there was a strong feeling that group would also vote labour?

Peakedin1997 · 01/03/2021 10:03

on the topic of generation z cynicism, I read this article this morning, which seems to sum this up

Gwenhwyfar · 01/03/2021 11:34

@ginandwineandbaileys

I think millennials were spoiled by their boomer grandparents/ parents, their older generation x siblings paved a more liberated path >>> hence their snowflake whiny personalities. The zoomers are the children of generation x, have been brought up to think radically, to not accept inequality, plus have information available at their fingertips, and sm. politicians now find it very difficult to lie, and hide behind personalities. I love my gen z hildren and their friends.
I'm Gen X and my parents were boomers. Am I spoilt as well? (probably am compared to my parents' generation, but not compared to youngsters these days).
flakymate · 01/03/2021 12:01

@ginandwineandbaileys what a stupid response. Someone born in 1995 is considered a millennial and someone born in 1997 gen z. Do you really think there’s much of a fundamental difference between people born 2 years apart? Enough to warrant your rude sweeping generalisations?

It’s doubtful young millennials even have
siblings old enough to be in gen x so the rest of your post is ridiculous too. Older Millennials are parents of gen z too. The hero worship is very strange, perhaps you should speak to your GP.

lolulop · 01/03/2021 12:40

My parents are boomers but like typical boomers they don't spoil me at all just whinge about how hard life is when you are debating which country to buy your next holiday home in 😆

😏
dayslikethese1 · 01/03/2021 12:48

What do we mean by Zoomers 'thinking radically'? Do you mean socially speaking? I understand they use SM differently but what about general attitudes? Just curious as people keep comparing millennials unfavorably to Gen Z.

lolulop · 01/03/2021 12:49

It was sarcasm because we can stereotype all generations can't we or maybe it's just because I'm an idealistic snowflake that voted for Corbyn (I didnt).

dayslikethese1 · 01/03/2021 12:51

I will admit I do feel a little attacked by both sides but I will refrain from getting upset as no doubt that would just confirm the 'whiny millennial' stereotype Grin

lolulop · 01/03/2021 12:52

You can't win! 😆

lolulop · 01/03/2021 12:54

Boomer: you're spoilt
Gen Z: so naive
Millennial: I'm not
Boomer: snowflake
Gen Z: whinger

🤣🤣

DiamondBright · 01/03/2021 12:54

My DFiance is a boomer, only just, but I still like to remind him he is one.

Ohnomoreno · 01/03/2021 12:57

I'm gen x through and through. Which means I don't give a shit about anything. Grin

JaninaDuszejko · 01/03/2021 12:57

Gen X: Hmm
lolulop · 01/03/2021 12:59

See I forget them!

dayslikethese1 · 01/03/2021 13:02

It's better to be forgotten I think Grin
