To think any cordless vacuum will be rubbish?

I live in a tall house with a lot of stairs and the only thing I really hate about cleaning it is lugging the vacuum cleaner up and down. I’ve got a Dyson cylinder vacuum and it works fine but it’s so awkward as it’s heavy and carrying the long hose bit etc is a pain.

I’d love to get a cordless vacuum, but I’ve had experience of a Vax one and it’s terrible. I like the convenience etc of it, but the power is not good, it gets hair wrapped around it straight away and also after no time at all it starts spitting the bits it’s just picked up out of the back of it onto the floor.

Are all cordless vacuums bad? Do the anti hair-wrap ones work? If I spend £400-£500 on a Dyson or Shark will I just end up feeling I’ve wasted my money?

I had a Vax cordless. The heads kept breaking and in the end I just gave up with it as they are, or were, £48 to replace each time. It's now sitting in my garage waiting to go to the tip.

I bought a Shark cordless to replace the Vax and I love it.

I find it light to push around, I'm more than happy with the power and suction and you can bend it to get under furniture.

The anti hair wrap is great, it's not just a gimmick, which I thought it might be, it really does work (I'm the owner of a long haired dog who moults for England).

I use it all the time now and my corded vacuum cleaner hasn't been out of the cupboard for ages.

We’ve got a Shark cordless. It’s far from rubbish. We’ve got a corded one too. We replaced our Dyson with them and would never go back

Seagullslanding · 14/02/2021 19:58

We have the shark Air wrap , cordless, we love it 2 dds with very long hair. We have noticed that we need to keep the filters clean. We tried cheap replacement filters which were useless so have now purchased the genuine filters

Seagullslanding · 14/02/2021 19:59

That should read anti hair wrap

yaybacktoschool · 14/02/2021 20:05

I have a Dyson cordless and a shark corded. I love both, but the dyson is 100% more manoeuvrable, lighter etc. Suction is about the same on both.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 14/02/2021 20:08

I like the Miele.

Much cheaper than a Dyson.

Subordinateclause · 14/02/2021 20:12

How recently did you have a Vax one? We have the newest model (the pet version) and it's brilliant. No issues with hair. Glad we didn't spend more on a Dyson/Shark.

Purplekitchen · 14/02/2021 20:13

I'm a housekeeper and have met many hoovers in my life.
The only one I rate is Miele cat and dog.

GraduallyWatermelon · 14/02/2021 20:15

I have the Dyson cordless and think it's very good.

2020iscancelled · 14/02/2021 20:26

Dyson V11 is INSANE

600£ but for me with dogs, toddlers and a lot of dust and mud and dirt it is worth every penny

It’s very powerful and the battery is great for a cordless.

I couldn’t go back to a corded - I do have a corded bissell to clean carpets and it drives me mad getting caught up in the cord every 5 minutes

Shoppingwithmother · 14/02/2021 20:30

The Vax one I’ve used is a ONEPWR Blade 3, which only costs £180 it was brand new a year ago. I like the sound of the Dyson V11 but £600 is a big risk!!

Do people in the main manage to use a cordless as their only hoover, to do a full house or is that unrealistic?

For those of you with a Dyson V11 I have a question. Does the docking station fit into an ordinary socket, and can you charge it without the stick attached? I only have sockets low down the wall or above worktops

georgarina · 14/02/2021 21:48

Got a Dyson and it's so worth it. Was such a hassle before, heavy and annoying to move, kept having to move the plug around...

And it was cheaper than the ballpark in your post.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 14/02/2021 21:52

I’ve had both a cordless Dyson and a Gtech air ram.. Both are good, but I prefer the latter, as it holds more and is easier to empty, although the Dyson is lighter. I’d never go back to a corded vacuum.

olivo · 14/02/2021 21:55

I have a cordless dyson, but it definitely wasn't £600. I love it. 3 of us with long long hair and only takes a few seconds to dehair the brush from time to time. I will replace with similar when it eventually gives up. Currently 3(?) years old.

howsicklyarsekissy · 14/02/2021 21:57

I am a professional cleaner & have used the lot! V11 is brilliant & Argos had it on for £469 which dyson price matched.

Glamflimfloogety · 14/02/2021 21:59

We've had a Bosch and currently have a Vax, they're both pure shite. Will be switching back to corded when we get our next one

Helenluvsrob · 14/02/2021 22:04

Shark anti hair wrap here.

Rarely have to snip hair from round the roller ( long haired daughter and hairy dog !). It’s probably not quite as good as out meile cat and dog corded. However it’s so easy I pop it round very often so the place is cleaner anyway.

Bubnomore · 14/02/2021 22:05

I have the Bosch Athlet but find they keep going faulty between the 1 and 2 year mark. What am I doing wrong that I can’t get one to do 5 years?

coronafiona · 14/02/2021 22:06

My dyson cordless is rubbish!

VinylDetective · 14/02/2021 22:10

@jay55

I've a dyson v10 animal and it copes with my long hair. No idea if it's any good for a big house though as I live in a small flat.
We’ve got that one too. It’s excellent.
Haffiana · 14/02/2021 22:12

Dyson V11 is simply AWSOME. Buy a spare filter and wash/change it every couple of weeks or so as they take 2-3 days to air dry after washing.

Anyone who doesn't love their Dyson has probably forgotten/doesn't know to regularly wash and dry the filter.

I also have a top of the range Miele vacuum cleaner and haven't used it since we got the Dyson.

Miranda15110 · 14/02/2021 22:19

@TheFairyCaravan

We’ve got a Shark cordless. It’s far from rubbish. We’ve got a corded one too. We replaced our Dyson with them and would never go back
Me too. A proper heavy duty corded Shark and more recently a cordless anti hair wrap. Both are excellent and I wouldn't go back to Dyson.
Shoppingwithmother · 14/02/2021 22:21

Thanks so much for all the advice.

I love my Dyson... hoovering is literally quick and painless( I'm disabled) best money I've ever spent on an essential but boring item!)
