To think any cordless vacuum will be rubbish?

I live in a tall house with a lot of stairs and the only thing I really hate about cleaning it is lugging the vacuum cleaner up and down. I’ve got a Dyson cylinder vacuum and it works fine but it’s so awkward as it’s heavy and carrying the long hose bit etc is a pain.

I’d love to get a cordless vacuum, but I’ve had experience of a Vax one and it’s terrible. I like the convenience etc of it, but the power is not good, it gets hair wrapped around it straight away and also after no time at all it starts spitting the bits it’s just picked up out of the back of it onto the floor.

Are all cordless vacuums bad? Do the anti hair-wrap ones work? If I spend £400-£500 on a Dyson or Shark will I just end up feeling I’ve wasted my money?

@Comefromaway, can I revive this thread for a moment to ask how you're getting on with the Samsung hoover? I'm considering buying one.

DeepaBeesKit · 27/11/2021 17:20

I think cordless vacuums are great as an add on/supplement to also having a full service corded one.

They dont have enough power imho to be your only vacuum, but are useful for small jobs.

We have a dyson one which we use for occasional spot cleans to pick up cat fluff, cleaning the car, quickly hoovering the small area around the litter tray, and the middle section of the stairs that isnt easily reached from the top or bottom using the nozzle. For these jobs it's great, but its nowhere near as good as a corded one for hoovering a whole room.

I have a vax and have no issues at all, power is fine, and it’s a pet one

Wouldn’t touch dyson with a barge pole

Warblerinwinter · 27/11/2021 17:35

Dyson- life changer. Would never go back to cordless. I have pretty much dispensed with brooms, dustpans or any other dry floor cleaner.

Warblerinwinter · 27/11/2021 17:37

Responding to a few comments about length of use time and power etc. The newer dyson batteries are enough for a big house and powerful. I have my charger on a timed socket so it comes on every day for a limited time. So it’s always charged

My dyson v 7 motor head is brilliant. Family home with a messy 3 year old and it really does the job. Doesn't cost £400 or whatever you said either, think it was £200 and something.

Treaclepie19 · 27/11/2021 18:33

We had a Dyson and it was okay. Our shark is amazing though. The hair doesn't get stuck and we're all very hairy.

Gtech. It's awesome. Got an Air ram and a hand held one.

Naughtynovembertree · 27/11/2021 19:01

Buy two, one upstairs and one down.

I have a corded Hoover, at work we had a Dyson. This is in an office, and we had cleaners come in weekly so the Dyson didn't have a lot of work to do. It cost 4 times the price of my Hoover - is it 4 times better? Definitely not. Constantly running out of charge, we almost had to send it back for repairs once (less than a year old) but my boss managed to fix it. I've had my Hoover for years and it's never let me down and goes just as well as the day I bought it. I do have a stick, and it's great for maintenance, but give me a corded any day.

I've been using a Dyson v10 Absolute for 11 months, now. Battery life is great; I have a spare filter, so there's always a clean one to hand. It's very manoeuvrable under beds, under and around furniture. Have kept my old DC7 upright but haven't used it at all since I bought the cordless. House has never been cleaner.

CovidCorvid · 28/11/2021 14:40

@BrilliantBetty

Have had nothing but annoyance from my cordless Dyson!! It gets hair wrapped around all the time, I'm forever clearing it.

And the battery life is ok, about 25mins without using the strong suction. It doesn't get me around the whole house so I do upstairs one day, downstairs another.

I'm sick of the hair issue though and have recently been using my Cylinder a lot more. It's heavy but at least I'm not clearing it out constantly.

Which model?

@dividedwefall

I have a Bosch Athlet and it is brilliant. My plug in vacuum is a Miele so it has tough competition.

It does get hair wrapped around it though. No way around that and i enjoy pulling it all out once in a while. It still works great even with lots of hair wound around the roller though!

And I thought I was the only one who found removing the thick wad of hair wrapped round the roller very satisfying! Best use of a Swiss army knife I've found.
crumpledlinens · 28/11/2021 14:44

We have a Dyson Animal v8 and it’s okay, but I have long hair and it gets wrapped round the head, as a few others above have complained, and it can’t quite cope with our husky’s shedding—the soft undercoat hair gets balled up in the tube & blocks the whole thing. I’m not sure we’d buy another one, but it is very handy and lightweight.

TheWernethWife · 28/11/2021 14:49

Gtech. It's awesome. Got an Air ram and a hand held one.

This is what we have, the K9 version though - two adults and three cats, works for us.

Lottie2shoes · 29/11/2021 12:12

I have a Dyson v8 absolut. Keep seeing good reviews but I found too easy to break. Out of warranty now but ive had to replace the heads twice each already and the smaller one needs to be replaced again. The actual vacuum main part replaced once as well. It's not due to wear and tear either, they burn out themselves

Jayaywhynot · 29/11/2021 12:22

@Shoppingwithmother

I am keen on the anti-hair wrap as we have a problem with long hair and also wool!
I've got this one, absolutely mint, money well spent
LemonMuffins · 29/11/2021 12:28

I have a Dyson V7 and a Philips Speedpro Max. In all honesty I hate them both. They're OK for a quick once over but can't get into all the stair corners properly and can't cope with picking up anything bigger than a grain of rice. Hair wrapping is also a recurring problem.

I'm eyeing up a mains powered Shark but feel quite bitter about it.
