To think any cordless vacuum will be rubbish?

I live in a tall house with a lot of stairs and the only thing I really hate about cleaning it is lugging the vacuum cleaner up and down. I’ve got a Dyson cylinder vacuum and it works fine but it’s so awkward as it’s heavy and carrying the long hose bit etc is a pain.

I’d love to get a cordless vacuum, but I’ve had experience of a Vax one and it’s terrible. I like the convenience etc of it, but the power is not good, it gets hair wrapped around it straight away and also after no time at all it starts spitting the bits it’s just picked up out of the back of it onto the floor.

Are all cordless vacuums bad? Do the anti hair-wrap ones work? If I spend £400-£500 on a Dyson or Shark will I just end up feeling I’ve wasted my money?

I have a shark just got it a few months ago, very good. I have wooden floors, two young kids and a dog. Very occasional cotton gets wrapped from my sewing , but mostly anti hair wrap works well. Heavier than handheld Dyson V6 that I had which I was constantly cleaning out.

whenyouseemyface · 15/02/2021 09:51

My shark is the basic model duo clean cordless anti hair wrap

I have a Tineco pure one s12, it's fantastic! Normal suction is very good but put it on max and it's amazing, i love the dust indicator ring too smile.]]
I very nearly bought a Tineco, just the fact that you have to have it wall mounted to charge (is that correct) put me off.
ThreeTwoOneBlastOff · 15/02/2021 09:54

We have a second hand Dyson that was passed on through family and honestly it’s shit. It doesn’t pick up anything other than the tiniest crumbs, anything bigger and I have to hold it over the crumb for it to get it. I hate it. It’s just a large DustBuster and there is no way I would use it to actually clean the house. That’s what my Miele is for.

whenyouseemyface · 15/02/2021 09:57

@Aprilx ha we could be the same person although I can do my whole 3 storey townhouse on one charge. But I'm not thorough, just a general main spaces hoovering.

Jarstastic · 15/02/2021 09:58

I’ve had both a V8 and V11, both great and going strong. I also have my old Miele cat and dog but this doesn’t get used often.

I have learnt to be careful when using the motorised heads (not all the heads are) that the floor is dry. I had a couple of heads go which Dyson replaced no quibble and I later realised the kitchen floor had some water and perhaps this had gone in the motor.

If you’re nervous about the outlay I think Dyson themselves do a return for any reason but you could phone up to double check (if you buy direct from them you don’t need to register for the 2-year guarantee).

If not keep an eye on the QVC website. They get them but sell out. It would be a no hassle return.

I have a plug in and a cordless, both Dyson ,both the pet/ animal version.
They are about 5 years old and tbh the plug in one picks up much better than the cordless , particularly dog hair. Maybe newer models are a bit better.
I love the cordless one for whizzing round kitchen floor etc but it runs out if charge after about 20 mins and dust compartment is small so needs emptying frequently and filters needs washing regularly otherwise it cuts off.
So I would never just have a cordless ,unless I lived alone in a very clean house with no pets!

I've got this one - Shark Dual battery - it's amazing! Went from a corded Dyson to this and I now vacuum much more regularly as it's so convenient.

The dual battery is great as you do get a full house clean out of it (4 bed house here) and I've not had any hair wrapping issues yet.

The only bad thing is when you vacuum a carpet that looks clean and was only vacuumed a few days earlier, it fills you with shame about the level of dirt that it picks up! It's genuinely horrifying to know we've been living with that amount of dirt in our carpets for years!

ShrinkingViolet9 · 15/02/2021 10:29

I have hip and knee pain and can no longer lug my heavy upright Dyson (a 16 year old DC07) upstairs.

We bought a Dyson V10 Absolute 6 weeks ago and haven't used the upright since. It's very manoeuvrable around furniture, reaches easily under beds, not too noisy or heavy, good battery life, easy to empty. I love it and wish we'd bought one two years ago.

mummabubs · 15/02/2021 10:36

Our Dyson cordless is pretty good for stairs and spillages but you definitely still need the upright too. Ours can fill up just from doing two rooms (and we don't have a big house!!) so needs multiple empties if you're planning to tackle the house and then might need a recharge to enable you to finish. (Hence why after 5 years of hoovering a 3 storey townhouse with a cordless Dyson I finally treated myself to a corded Shark vacuum) 🤣

I feel this way about our robot vacuum. Because you have to clean it after every time, plus it's so convenient, I put it on more often, I'm always horrified by how full it is after just a single use. It does really tell you something about we live normally and I have started to have more sympathy for people who insist on vacuuming daily! Grin
sproutsandparsnips · 15/02/2021 10:56

I have to say I had a Dyson v8 animal and it was really good but then I had to change the battery - the spares are so expensive! It lost its charge so quickly but the spare battery didn't improve things so I had to change it. Went for a Hoover cordless and have had to have 2 replacements in less than a year because the motor went. Going to persevere because I don't want to be wasteful but I'm afraid I can't recommend it at all.
Thinking of getting a robot though - any recommendations?

chocolatemademefat · 15/02/2021 10:56

I’ve got a Dyson cordless which runs for no more than ten minutes at a time. I bought a plug in Vax cleaner and I love it. Not great for the stairs but otherwise excellent. And a fraction of the price of cordless vacuums. And my Dyson gets serviced every year so it’s not as if it’s neglected - just not very good.

42andcounting · 15/02/2021 15:34

We've got a Dyson V6 absolute (old now). I love it, and may well cry when it dies. I have so much less back trouble since we bought it. We've got two very long haired people in the house, a messy child who loves doing crafts and drops lots of crumbs, and a gerbil who likes to throw bedding out; the Dyson takes it all in stride. It does like to eat small bits of lego though (but spits out hair grips).

I only clean the filters out every three months or so, but I do pull the hair out of the rollers about once a week.

I can do a whizz round of the house (3 bed) on one charge (unless its especially messy). To do a proper go round of all the coving, pull out all furniture and do behind etc I would need to charge it up again about half way.

BMW6 · 15/02/2021 15:38

I love my cordless Dyson V8 Animal - have had for 4 years, no issues and one charge does whole house plus stairs now dead easy!

Comefromaway · 16/02/2021 12:04

The Samsung has arrived. It's this one www.samsung.com/uk/vacuum-cleaners/stick/powerstick-vs15t7031r4/

Dh says he is very impressed with the crap it has pulled out of the carpet considering he only hoovered with Henry on Sunday.

Shoppingwithmother · 19/02/2021 20:11

Thanks for the update @Comefromaway . I’ll look that one up!

I have a Dyson V7 and it's great, I've had no issues with my hair around the place. I'd totally upgrade to a V11 if I could be bothered to splash out 😃

CoronaIsWatching · 19/02/2021 20:18

I got one from Amazon for about 30 quid, don't remember the brand name but it's been perfect for me so far. I live in a small one bed flat and I just use that now.

Thedutchessofhastings · 19/02/2021 20:21

I have the Shark anti-hair wrap. It’s great. Really powerful and the battery lasts just about long enough to do the whole house. (4 bed - lots of carpet). Never had a problem with hair getting stuck.
I also have a corded shark and never intended for the cordless to become my main vacuum but the corded one is now in the garage as it is honestly just as good.

LadyEloise · 26/04/2021 09:15

Dysons get such mixed reviews. Hmm

Looubylou · 26/04/2021 14:16

Love my shark duo for whizzing around. My old £30-40 vac cylinder was equally effective but cumbersome - I'm much more likely to whizz round every day now. The shark is not so great at what I call the nitty gritty hoovering - I miss the control I had with a hose ie holding right at the end doing cushions and stuff. Cylinder is small - before our doggie passed away 😢 it filled up in a flash - not an issue now. Love the headlights. Was less than £300. I put mine on charge after every hoover so I'm never caught out. In the past I've been known to hoover for 2 hours or more- pulling everything out. Obviously I can't do that anymore.

stackemhigh · 26/04/2021 14:19

This is so polarising as on the regret purchases threads, the Dyson cordless and its ilk are the always the number 1 regretted purchase.

the80sweregreat · 26/04/2021 14:28

I love my one.
It's only a mid priced dyson , but if you remember to clean the filter and keep it topped up on charge and empty it regularly then it's fine.
I got out the big Hoover the other day and I've forgotten how heavy it is in comparison. My battery one is great for cleaning the stairs too.
