To think any cordless vacuum will be rubbish?

I live in a tall house with a lot of stairs and the only thing I really hate about cleaning it is lugging the vacuum cleaner up and down. I’ve got a Dyson cylinder vacuum and it works fine but it’s so awkward as it’s heavy and carrying the long hose bit etc is a pain.

I’d love to get a cordless vacuum, but I’ve had experience of a Vax one and it’s terrible. I like the convenience etc of it, but the power is not good, it gets hair wrapped around it straight away and also after no time at all it starts spitting the bits it’s just picked up out of the back of it onto the floor.

Are all cordless vacuums bad? Do the anti hair-wrap ones work? If I spend £400-£500 on a Dyson or Shark will I just end up feeling I’ve wasted my money?

Miele cordless is far more superior than Shark or Dyson.

Comefromaway · 15/02/2021 00:30

I actually ordered myself (or rather dh) a Samsung Jet today. We’ve got a Gtech which is great on the laminate but not good on the carpet. However I hate the Henry my dad bought us.

I read that Shark isn’t so good on carpet and dh has RSI so thinks having to hold the on button on the Dyson will be difficult.

It’s coming tomorrow so I will report back.

Blossom4538 · 15/02/2021 00:52

Love my Henry on hard floors, awful on carpet and just drags hair around.

Any good recommendations for carpet hoover pls?!! doesn’t need to be cordless. Carpet attracts every little thing and it seems to stick! I shed a lot of hair, as does my DD. We also have a cat.

FionaMacCool · 15/02/2021 00:57

Oh dear, lots of Dyson love on here.
Wish I could say the same.
When we got it, it was lovely- light, easy to use, one charge did most of the house. The love lasted about 6 weeks.

A year later, I loathe the bloody thing. It constantly lights up as having a blocked filter. Which it doesn't have, the bloody thing is treated with kid gloves, washed and dried more often than some of the sheets in this house.
Bizarrely, I googled this issue today and came across this blog post myhomefarm.co.uk/dyson-cyclone-v10-is-annoyingly-fussy

It's not just me. I, my mum, and 2 sisters have Dyson cordless, varying from V6-11. Unanimously, wont be buying them again.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 15/02/2021 00:58

Any cordless I've had has been shut but I'm too lazy to have a corded one bow so I stick with it Grin

safariboot · 15/02/2021 01:05

I have the old Dyson v6. First the bad. Bin size and battery life are rubbish. It's light, but actually hard to push over carpets. And the beater brush is prone to stopping working, there's wrapped hair lodged that I can't remove it all. Now the good. It does have good suction, it's pretty good on hard floors, and it's great for vacuuming furniture and suchlike, and the car.

I'll replace it with a corded, but I'll keep it for what it's good at.

Looking forward to the update Samsung are taking over domestic products so far IME they're excellent.

Savethewhales · 15/02/2021 03:13

Hate my shark, if the battery isn't in correctly it it crashes down onto my foot. It gets blocked easily and generally a pain in the arse.

TwoShades1 · 15/02/2021 03:55

I have an LG cord zero and it’s been life changing! I absolutely love it. It comes with 2 batteries so not chance of running out to power (unless your cleaning a mansion). Not sure if LG is available in the uk, I’m in Australia.

MountainPeakGeek · 15/02/2021 03:59

Loved our cordless Dyson (V8 Absolute) until it died a month out of its 2 year warranty. Wish they would give them the same 5 year warranty that they do for their corded range. (I understand that they would have to exclude the battery.)

Because of our personal experience with the early failure and high cost, I'd not get another. Was fantastic while it lasted though.

Bought this one to replace it: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FFMTW8X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_0KEHSCMKTFHXSSXHY4TD?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 and I'm really happy with it. It was actually a lot cheaper here in Canada, though, so it was worth the risk ($423.99 = ~£240.)

Not sure I'd spend £370 on such an obscure brand...

Soulstirring · 15/02/2021 04:03

Dyson was great to start but within a year the battery wouldn’t last 2mins on max mode.
Fine for a quick wizz around in standard mode but doesn’t really do a deep clean. We use our upright for a good going over. Wouldn’t buy one again. My mum and friend have the same model and have the same issues. Friend had hers replaced under warranty and new one still has crap battery.

ellenpartridge · 15/02/2021 08:35

We found our cordless Dyson decent.

Okbutnotgreat · 15/02/2021 09:20

I’ve got a V8 and it’s our only vacuum in a 4 bed house. Had to replace the battery after a couple of years because it wasn’t holding charge properly but it’s a battery and they don’t last forever just like mobile phones etc.

As soon as I can afford to I will upgrade to the V11 with the wider head. I vacuum my whole house at least once a day and the fact that it’s cordless makes it such a quick easy job I’ll never go back to a corded one. You can see how much it picks up and imo it’s worth every penny. I don’t think there is a better one available than the Dyson V11.

MatildaTheCat · 15/02/2021 09:28

@Shoppingwithmother

The Vax one I’ve used is a ONEPWR Blade 3, which only costs £180 it was brand new a year ago. I like the sound of the Dyson V11 but £600 is a big risk!!

Do people in the main manage to use a cordless as their only hoover, to do a full house or is that unrealistic?

Yes to be honest it is.

I’ve got a cylinder Dyson which my cleaner is paid to lug around and a cordless one which I whizz around the ground floor most days. It’s marvellous but not deigned in my opinion for large scale cleaning. Also blocks relatively easily.

I wouldn’t be without it though.

Propercrimboselecta · 15/02/2021 09:31

I have a dyson v10 animal and its great

Indecisivelurcher · 15/02/2021 09:32

We've just put our dyson roll ball pull along in the bin, and will just use our cordless shark from now on. I got the Dyson back out at the weekend to do a big vac after having new carpets, and it was just rubbish in comparison!

Have you tried cleaning out the pressure sensor?

It may be the little tube/port for that has become clogged so it thinks there's no pressure drop across the filter and so its not working.

Nohomemadecandles · 15/02/2021 09:34

I'm disappointed in the Shark. It blocks easily. And the suction with the tools on isn't great.
I love my gtech AirRam for the floors though. And a cordless handheld Dyson for the stairs.
(And Henry for DIY jobs!)

Changi · 15/02/2021 09:40

It would be unrealistic for me. I use cordless for quick jobs and the stairs.

Waitingfornothing · 15/02/2021 09:41

I had a Vax cordless and it was shit but I got a cordless Shark duo clean with pet attachment a few years ago and I love it

I do.

I've got a large 5 bedroom house so I will report back It comes tonorrow.
HoppingPavlova · 15/02/2021 09:44

We use the Dyson v10 animal every day as a quick go-over. Still need to use the Dyson barrel once a fortnight though as the v10 is great for surface stuff but doesn’t get stuff out of deep joins in floorboards. The barrel gives a deep clean/suck. Wouldn’t be without v10 though as makes daily maintenance so much easier.

Okbye · 15/02/2021 09:45

I’ve got a Bosch Athlet (previously had a cordless Vax which wasn’t as good) and I LOVE IT! I’d never go back to corded.

I do the whole house with it (4 bed) and it manages just fine 😊

Aprilx · 15/02/2021 09:45

I recently switch from a Dyson pet model to a Shark pet model, don’t know the exact names. I got fed up of the Dyson because it would get blocked and stop working literally every five minutes. I also could not do the whole house on one charge, it was usually just the last room it couldn’t stretch to which was quite annoying.

The shark picks up better and also came with two batteries so can always do the whole house without needing to stop to recharge. What I don’t like about it though is that it is much heavier than the Dyson. I feel quite tired afterwards, maybe I should start to see it as a bit of a workout.
