I want to start this post by saying I'm not generally a 'woo' person. I'm not talking about ghosts or implying that the furniture is haunted but I am wondering about bad energy. I've NC because I expect to be torn a new one Grin

Just over 2 weeks ago I bought a pre owned wardrobe on the Facebook market place. It's quite old.

Probably irrelevant but the people who delivered it were quite strange folk, the sort you get an uneasy feeling from. It was a very awkward handover.

Well ever since I got this wardrobe in the bedroom I've been plagued with disturbing nightmares every.single.night without fail.

My toddler DD who also sleeps in my room has been saying she is "scared" in the night now, she has never done that before. She doesn't know about my nightmares and has no reason to be so unsettled all of a sudden.

My mood has been quite low for the same amount of time with no particular cause identifiable, I'm finding myself feeling uncharacteristically short tempered and down.

AIBU to think all of the above may be linked to the wardrobe/bad energy.

Bonkers or possible?!

Kindly Bonkers - sweet but eccentric sister of Truly Scrumptious.

Black sheep of the family. Maybe Truly went NC? That's why we never hear about her.

Knackeredmommy · 07/02/2021 11:29

Sage the wardrobe and your home, make sure windows are open when doing it.

@AlternativePerspective

Years ago I bought a carved wooden box. Can’t describe it any more than it was sort of ornate iyswim.

I took it home and I spoke to two friends during the holiday and wrote down both their addresses and put them in that box. That was all that was in there.

Those two people died within a week of each other.

I know on a rational level that of course the box didn’t have anything to do with their deaths. But I just never felt the same about it after that and I got rid.

Jesus Christ, that is unnerving Shock

I just discovered you can buy smudge sticks and ‘cleansing kits’ on Amazon!

k1233 · 07/02/2021 11:42

Non furniture related, but if both you and your daughter are having bad dreams, is the room too warm? Nightmares can be triggered by being too hot when you are asleep. Try having the room cooler and see if that helps.

littlepeas · 07/02/2021 11:46

I would just get rid. Whatever the real cause of your feelings, you now associate it with the wardrobe and there’s no point keeping it.

I do think things and places have energy. We rented a very old cottage for about 18 months a few years ago. It had originally been 2 cottages and had been made into one property. The rooms that on one side of the house (cottage 1) were nice to be in and I always felt comfortable, despite the age of the property and all it’s quirks. But the other side (cottage 2) was horrible - I always felt a strange sense of dread in those rooms - upstairs and downstairs, but mainly in one particular room. There were no visible differences between the two sides of the house and it was quite light and airy considering it’s age. I used to lie in bed at night and quite merrily wonder how many people had died in the room, but wasn’t scared, as our room was on the ‘nice’ side. The ‘bad’ side didn’t feel haunted - it didn’t feel like a ghost - it just felt horrible. Probably a rational explanation like mould or something - but nothing obvious.

ItbarelysnowsinLondon · 07/02/2021 11:54

It's not that it's too warm in the bedroom, if anything it's on the chilly side.

Years ago when I was a child me and my DM lived in a house that had a very miserable energy. We all hated it, (including the pets) and didn't want to spend much time there. We moved out in under 2 years and found out from an old neighbour/friend that the new tenant felt exactly the same about it.

I definitely do think that places/things can give off good/bad vibes so it doesn't seem too bonkers that the same could be said for passed on items etc.

Have you tried seeing if you get to Narnia if you get inside it?

QuestionableMouse · 07/02/2021 11:59

@mumwon

it maybe subtle smell? chemicals used in cleaning it or the wood itself or polish or finish used?
That was my thought.

I know an absolutely lovely woman but just always felt uneasy around her. One day that feeling vanished - she'd changed her perfume.

Glitterblue · 07/02/2021 12:00

@ItbarelysnowsinLondon I completely understand how you feel. I had that feeling from a wardrobe in my granny's house when I was little, and also from a doll's pram in my other granny's house - I was terrified to go into the room it was in. Also our first home we had after we got married, I felt uneasy and unsettled from day 1. We had so much happen to us in that house as well, from MIL passing away suddenly, to DD being born very prematurely after an awful pregnancy, constant debt issues and fear of bailiffs turning up. I did find out someone had committed suicide on the site before the house was built but I don't know if anything was connected to that. I wish I'd known about sage then. We ended up having to do a voluntary repossession on it before it was actually repossessed. I'm about to sage this house - I was advised to by a psychic who said it would help with the fact that we constantly feel exhausted and unmotivated in it and feel as if we can't enjoy it. She's told me how to do it but I've not done it yet. It's nothing to do with lockdown, we've felt like this for years in it.

DenisetheMenace · 07/02/2021 12:01

Makes you unhappy, bonkers or not doesn’t matter, get rid of it.

justchecking1 · 07/02/2021 12:02

@AlternativePerspective can I PM you a few names for your box?!

justchecking1 · 07/02/2021 12:05

I'll just leave this here for you OP, should help with the sleeping tonight 😂

Hotzenplotz · 07/02/2021 12:05

Turn out all the lights and sleep in it.

ItbarelysnowsinLondon · 07/02/2021 12:05

@Glitterblue

She's told me how to do it but I've not done it yet

Would you mind sharing that with me? I don't know much if anything about smearing sage, is there a cerrain way to do it / things not to do?

Zoflora for the bogeywardrobe is such a MN response. If the Devil himself came calling, MNers would see him off with some Zoflora.

Probably a portal to hell, OP

LongJohnLewis · 07/02/2021 12:14

You can get garlic Zolflora in Waitrose.
My very young DD kept asking why that man was walking through her wall. Wasn’t concerned, just a question. Completely freaked me out but I didn’t show it, just said I had no idea. Some years later the external render was removed in building works and there was a blocked up door exactly where she’d seen him. I had already bought a sage plant for her room and had a word with the “room”. The house feels nice though so I just asked them not to freak her out, we’ve got enough to contend with!

CriticalWoman · 07/02/2021 12:14

I'm amazed at the number of people who believe not only that bad vibes can be transported via an inaminate object but that same bad vibes can be defeated by waving a few burning herbs around.
OP - if you're keen to get started with the sage could you buy some dried from the supermarket and burn that?
FWIW my money is on a very angry and vengeful tree that is still furious at having been chopped down in its prime and turned into furniture.

MirandaGoshawk · 07/02/2021 12:21

I also bought a ring that I can't wear, because I seem to have bad luck when I'm wearing it. Re the wardrobe, I also think your best bet is to get rid of it. You can always get another wardrobe and start afresh.

3 years ago my dad and stepmum moved home. One of the least woo people I know. She regretted moving into that house within months as so many things started to go wrong from then, stuff ranging from things going wrong with the house to people becoming ill, she blamed it on the house, thought it was cursed. Unfortunately, she died 2 months ago, only 7 months after being diagnosed with cancer. My dad can't wait to sell the place.

I was given a bed when I was a teenager. The bed was old, made of dark wood with carved flowers on it. It had belonged to a 102 year old family member who had recently died. It had the smell of this old lady's house on it and I felt horrible sleeping in it as though I could sense that it was her bed and not mine. Hard to explain but it just felt strange getting into it.
After I'd had it a few weeks it felt like mine and I was no longer creeped out by it, it was just a bed. I think sometimes things can have an energy but it can wear off, and your own energy can take over. If you like the wardrobe and want to keep it, you'll probably just get used to it the longer you have it.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 07/02/2021 12:36

Looks exactly like the wardrobe my parents had in the 90's and 00's. If it says "Beadle and Chrome" on it anywhere then it probably is theirs. Any bad vibes will be from the horrendous amount of athletes foot power my dad used back then, and boy did that stuff stink.
