To think that the vast majority of people do not feel they have a gender identity?
Galvantulang · 06/02/2021 21:49
My company has recently started suggesting that we can record our gender identity and preferred pronouns (these would be publicly displayed on the intranet) on our HR record system. It's optional for now, but almost everyone I asked at work when the email came out went "eh?".
Apart from the data protection issues of collecting all this extra information, AIBU to think that the majority of people don't consider themselves to have a gender identity, just their sex?
i.e. you don't identify as a man or woman, you just... are one?
Watching laws and amendments to bills being proposed (especially in Scotland) based on recognising gender identity rather than biological sex, seems somewhat unreal.
Yabu = I feel like I have a gender identity.
Yanbu = I do not feel like I have a gender identity.
Am I being unreasonable?AIBU

I have no gender. I know zero people with a gender.
RaininSummer · 06/02/2021 21:56
I agree. I dont feel I have one and most people wouldnt know what the question meant unless they had enjoyed re-education at work recently.
Melroses · 06/02/2021 22:08
I don't have one. I have never had one. I am just me. I meet other people who are like me in various ways, at different times, but they are not the same as me.
My sex is female but that is not my identity.
dingoesatemybaby · 06/02/2021 22:10
I don't particularly understand the concept of gender identity. I am a biological female, I wouldn't know if I identified as a male because I'm not one so how would I know?
ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 06/02/2021 22:13
I don't have a gender identity but I would make sure they know that my pronoun is Your Majesty .
Quaagars · 06/02/2021 22:14
I'm not trans, but I do have a very strong sense of being female regardless of what my sex is, or my personality is despite what people try to make me feel on here.
It's just there.
No, I can't describe it.
Is this the next question on the list of "any energy for any more?" infilitration of AIBU, was wondering when the next trans question was going to pop up, was thinking should be soon lol and here it is
VestaTilley · 06/02/2021 22:14
Agree. Nobody has one. You have a sex and a personality. That’s it.
NovemberR · 06/02/2021 22:17
I don't think I understand the difference between sex and gender if I'm honest.
I'm a woman. Or female. I don't "identify" as anything.
pumpkinbump · 06/02/2021 22:17
No, I'm a woman and I couldn't tell you what it feels like to be one. I don't have anything to compare it to. It's not something I think about. IMO gender should be abolished.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/02/2021 22:22
I was gendered as feminine (taught to be nice and quiet and that my looks were more important than my intelligence and so on) in a patriarchal world. This is what gender used to mean. I’m still ‘feminine’ because that early conditioning, which is constantly reinforced in a world that expects us to be ‘nice’ and ‘pretty’ and sanctions us if we are not, is hard to throw.
My sex is female. I am a woman. My pronouns are the ones you learnt in primary school.
It is important to me to challenge assumptions that Gender is innate because as a system of socialisation it is so intrinsic to women’s oppression.
I refuse to state my pronouns because it gives voice to the lie that gender is something we feel rather than being imposed on us in a patriarchal world.
ZackaryQuack · 06/02/2021 22:24
Hmm, never thought about it. I am female, but that is because it is how I was born. I just feel like me?
What makes a woman a woman and a man a man, beyond their sex?

I am female. I don't know what gender is. Third person pronouns are not a form of address so there is absolutely no reason for me to mandate them.
nolongersurprised · 06/02/2021 22:26
Gender = personality.
There are so many recognised genders as well - maybe 60 plus.
Some of them just sound like a bored teenager marking shit up. What’s the difference between poly gender and pan gender? And what’s with maverique?
ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 06/02/2021 22:28
but I do have a very strong sense of being female regardless of what my sex is, or my personality is despite what people try to make me feel on here.
This makes no sense, unless you are trying to define sex as both gamets and an identity simultaneously.
I don't think anyone defines sex as personality.

i've never thought about it, but i suspect thats in the same way i've never thought about my sexuality, because I fall into the 'norm' so i havent had to think about it.
if it doesn't matter to you, then it doesn't. but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter to other people.
ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 06/02/2021 22:32
Nope, I'm a woman who has a load of gender stereotypes and expectations placed on her, some of which coincidentally fit.
People tend to use she/her, and that's fine. It doesn't feel like a choice just the default.
Gender isn't within but external, for me. I haven't, and won't, set my work signature.
Whitecup4 · 06/02/2021 22:32
Im a women, but I don’t act like one I guess?? I don’t do make up and bitching and get scared to get dirty or muddy, but I’m not like a bloke either, I don’t fight, burp or fart aloud, play football or like sport. I just feel like myself, neither like a man or a women but just me.
However i am a women, happy with that, but I identify as me I guess? I don’t identify as a women, I am a women.
SamLovesLembasBread · 06/02/2021 22:34
It does seem like a waste of time and resources to ask people for their gender identity when most will give the standard "normal" answer, if an answer is required for them to continue working.
Why would it matter, anyway?! What is the point of asking?
