Flatmate hygiene

Grossedout12 · 05/02/2021 22:12

I have a flatmate who doesn’t wash her hands after going to the toilet

I’m not up against the door listening in case that’s what you’re thinking! You can hear the tap and pipes when the water flows into the sink. That’s how I know.

Also she’s in there for a min, flushes the loo, then she’s out in a second so no time to wash either.

It’s starting to make me feel so sick 🤢 and I keep wiping the door handles and in the kitchen because I think of everywhere she touches.

I can’t bring myself to talk to her about this. There are other hygiene issues too.

I may have to move out?

Also I’m not OCD! I just like a clean space to live where people are respectful 😔

So gross yet horrifically common apparently. I hate that!!!!

billiondollarwhale · 05/02/2021 22:15

Unless she's pissing all over her hands... YABU

I’m constantly cleaning up after her - food bits everywhere on the kitchen floor, kitchen table etc. I feel like I’m her maid. I’ve asked her to be more mindful and she’s very sensitive. Neighbours have complained about how loudly she stomps and closes doors. She’s like a bull in a China shop. But telling her about how she needs to wash her hands after wiping her fanny, and doing a shit, is beyond me. I can’t face it.

This.

And you cannot be OCD. You can have or suffer from OCD.

HTH

Dullardmullard · 05/02/2021 22:22

Ffs just tell her
Plus stop cleaning up after her dump her crap in her room and that’s that.

Grossedout12 · 05/02/2021 22:22

Thanks for the education WithinAForestDark 🤣🙈 I guess you’ve never made a typo in your life. What a smarty you are.

Can you start a subtle conversation about how noisy the pipes are*, and whether or not it’s worth ringing the LL just in case there’s summat wrong with the plumbing?

*I know there’s nothing wrong with it btw- just giving her a heads up that you can hear everything.

Seriously Hmm

Of course it is unreasonable to not wash your hands after using the loo.

Grossedout12 · 05/02/2021 22:24

Last time I didn’t clean up after her, we had insects in the cupboard from all the food bits she left in there Dullardmullard 😭🤢 So it’s better if I clean up and avoid another infestation of some kind

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2021 22:24

For goodness sake. If you don’t like her, which you clearly don’t, either move out or give her notice, if it’s your flat.

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2021 22:25

Sorry let’s start again, is this your property or are you a tennant in a house share?

billiondollarwhale · 05/02/2021 22:25

When at home, I just don't see the issue after a wee. Urine is sterile, the loo gets properly cleaned daily, and we all shower daily.

Phone screens are much, much more hazardous

Grossedout12 · 05/02/2021 22:26

ChristOnAPeloton I don’t think she’ll get the subtle hint. I’m just tired of telling her not to slam the doors, not to leave unopened food in the cupboards etc etc

It had become embarrassing for me more than it is for her it seems

Grossedout12 · 05/02/2021 22:28

billiondollarwhale she doesn’t shower daily and I don’t think she washes her hands before using the kitchen for example

She leaves greasy hand prints all over the kitchen

Find some of the responses here bizarre. Of course YANBU - it's totally disgusting to not wash your hands after going to the loo at any time, but hand hygiene is even more important at the moment! Can't believe that there are people on here who think it is ok to not wash hands after going to the loo unless you've pissed all over them?! So grim. No wonder bugs and viruses spread.Confused

Yanbu at all. I couldn’t share a house with somebody who didn’t wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Spread where? To my husband whom I kiss anyway?

JackieWeaverRules er that’s REALLY helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to reply

billiondollarwhale this person isn’t my husband or relative tho

OP posts:
SimonJT · 05/02/2021 22:31

Thats disgusting, I wouldn’t be able to live with someone dirty. Even if you request she wash her hands you can’t trust that she’ll wash them when you’re not home.

What is the rental situation?

Santatizer · 05/02/2021 22:32

@billiondollarwhale urine really isn't sterile. Even a quick Google search will reveal that. And poo definitely isn't - people wipe and with the best practice in the world, will sometimes get particles of fecal matter on their hands, touch the loo roll, touch the toilet flush, touch the door handle. It's just basic good hygiene to wash hands after using the toilet, for goodness' sake...

grapewine · 05/02/2021 22:32

It's not great. But the fact that you'd rather move out than have an uncomfortable conversation is mind-boggling to me. Use your words.
