Just that really. I’ve just been sent an email from change.org asking me to sign a petition to push for a state funeral for him.
Now don’t get me wrong he was a remarkable man and an inspiration... but a state funeral? That will cost us, the taxpayer money we definitely cannot afford in the currant climate. Also I’m sure he’d rather the money go where it’s needed.

I've just read in the news that his family have said he wouldn't have wanted a big fuss, so no, I don't think there should be a state funeral.
Maybe a monument or something instead for remembrance, but not this.

He was an old man who did a sponsored walk, like thousands of people do to raise money for deserving causes every year. It was hijacked by the media and millions of people donated thinking they were helping the NHS buy essential supplies. They weren't. The money he raised will be spent on things to make patients and staff more comfortable. Not that that's a bad thing.

It's lovely that those charities will be able to make the lives of NHS staff and patients nicer for a good long time to come but there are an awful lot of people who have devoted years of their lives to improve things for others and they are just as deserving of a state funeral. By that I mean it would be ridiculous.

Seriously, the media and the government need to stop blowing this out of all proportion now and BJ should not have hijacked his death to make political capital.

Wouldn’t a state funeral involve a lot of people in the same place at the same time and therefore a covid risk? Not really very appropriate. Plus expensive - I’m sure he’d prefer the money went to the NHS.

I wish those Change.org petitions had a "not bloody likely" option.

winterchills · 03/02/2021 20:00

I agree!

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 20:00

missrm

Just did an actual Shock face on your comment and that's rare

I thought the pride of Britain award was over kill to be honest
Bless him he walked up and down his garden fab job
But people who win that award have fought, struggled or been incredibly brave

I've just been caught in a clapping session outside m and s for him and invited by email to do a doorstep 2 mins silence .... enough of this madness !!!

Lemmeout · 03/02/2021 20:01

Holy mackerel no to that.

MadameTuffington · 03/02/2021 20:01

I think there should be an annual Covid Memorial Day/national holiday to commemorate all those who died during the pandemic and to celebrate keyworkers - this day could be named Sir Cptn Tom Moore Day in his honour?

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

I think Lord Mountbatten had a state funeral didn't he?
No. He had a ceremonial funeral.

Use the report button and hopefully MN will take it down
Horrible post Sad

Hotzenplotz · 03/02/2021 20:02

He was a good man who did a good thing.

The mania reminds me of the national wailing cringefest after Diana sadly died. It seemed fake as hell then and it does now too.

Oh dear god

Saying nothing of that sort.

It certainly read like you were trying to imply something, what that was wasn't clear though.
Maybe make yourself clearer in future.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/02/2021 20:04

What's next, a petition for a sainthood?!

Don't give them ideas, LadyMonica Wink

As for hoping folk don't turn his funeral into a circus, it may already be too late for that, especially when a state funeral doesn't happen. Going by some of the silliness online I can just see the "they've cheated our Tom" crowd staging a sobfest

A shame some don't seem to share Tom's own dignity ...

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 20:05

Someone will suggest etching his face into the cliffs of Dover next.

Waspnest · 03/02/2021 20:05

Saying nothing of that sort.

So why mention Jimmy Saville, that well-known predatory paedophile?

Hmm
AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/02/2021 20:06

Nope. Not at all.
I forgot to go out and clap as well.

RubyViolet · 03/02/2021 20:07

The Government are trying to take political ownership of Captain Tom, they have politicised him.
It is awful to see it.

nitsandwormsdodger · 03/02/2021 20:07

I think there should be an annual Covid Memorial Day/national holiday to commemorate all those who died during the pandemic and to celebrate keyworkers - this day could be named Sir Cptn Tom Moore Day in his honour?

Why him?
Why not the team who made the vaccine ?
Or the doctors and nurses who have died at work
Or the lady down my street who has run the food bank for years?

peak2021 · 03/02/2021 20:09

A stone in Westminster Abbey perhaps, to represent all those whose lives have been lost during the pandemic (he may be the oldest or one of a very few WW2 veterans to die after having Covid 19).

One of the great sadnesses of the pandemic has been that funerals have had to be small family gatherings only, if that. To have a state funeral for anyone even if by postponing would be in poor taste I think. I cannot imagine that Captain Tom Moore would have wanted one if asked the question when he was alive.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 20:09

I think I've hit peak MN tonight, need to step away as it's utterly toxic on here tonight.
That JS post has just about finished me off, feel urgh.
