Just that really. I’ve just been sent an email from change.org asking me to sign a petition to push for a state funeral for him.
Now don’t get me wrong he was a remarkable man and an inspiration... but a state funeral? That will cost us, the taxpayer money we definitely cannot afford in the currant climate. Also I’m sure he’d rather the money go where it’s needed.

A ridiculous request that certainly won't be granted.

He's already had his preferential treatment by his family being allowed into the hospital with him. I don't begrudge it but I can't help but feel it was unfair on the other thousands of people who would have loved that opportunity.

blancheduboiss · 03/02/2021 20:12

Absolutely ludicrous idea. It's the last thing this country needs to shell out for.

But it won't happen, so anyway ...

Hmmph · 03/02/2021 20:13

I think maybe naming a ward or maybe a bereavement suite after him at his local hospital is about the level I’d be comfortable with. As in “The Moore Room”.

I LOVE the idea of a tree for each death. That would be a lovely memorial!

DogsSausages · 03/02/2021 20:14

The tree idea is great, not everyone agrees with the Barbados trip and naming a ward could potentially upset bereaved relatives.

No.
There are untold numbers of people, quietly , and without publicity, who have also raised huge amounts of money . That the BBC ( and how were they informed? ) haven't put their publicity machine behind them doesn't mean that their efforts are less worthy.

Yes , a 100 year old veteran who walked that distance is amazing and should be recognised but so many, many people and children have also gone above and beyond as well.

There have been stories of children with multiple difficulties who have struggled to walk just one mile. People who have spent decades trying to preserve a quiet corner. People who have spent decades measuring the numbers of butterflies in a field.
People who , quietly , batch cook casseroles and feed neighbours . People who have knitted, crotched and sewn for decades for those who are in need.
Bakers who have spent years supporting their local community.
The list is endless.
The NHS is publicly funded . It needs so much more public funding. Capt Tom's fundraising is purely for charitable efforts... it doesn't add to the public funding of the NHS.

I find it alarming that Captain Tom , Lord bless his soul, has almost been deified.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/02/2021 20:15

Let the government plant a tree for every victim of Covid

Lovely idea Smile Now that's something I really could get behind ...

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2021 20:16

The knighthood was OTT, the most many people who devote their whole lives to charity get is an MBE.

JustDanceAddict · 03/02/2021 20:16

Er, no. But a statue would be a nice gesture.

PenfoldPenny · 03/02/2021 20:17

100% No.

Bluntness100 · 03/02/2021 20:17

This would be too much

I never understand this about people. Someone famous dies and there is an outpouring of grief, be it a pop star, or princess Diana or now sir Tom Moore. We saw the clapping last time, where people were outside playing fucking musical instruments, bullying their neighbours to do clap, and making it all too much.

It’s always so so over the top, it’s like some people just don’t know when to stop and others just go along with it because they think they should.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely he sir Tom Moore did 100 laps of his garden, it caught the nation at a key moment, it raised what, nearly forty million for thr nhs, but he was knighted for it, well recognised for it, even went to Barbados on holiday because of it. Sometimes we need to know when to stop, it’s not fair on the man otherwise, becayse it becomes divisive.

Pixxie7 · 03/02/2021 20:18

Totally agree, yes he did an awful lot for moral over the past year, but to be honest I have now had enough.

PeggyHill · 03/02/2021 20:20

Do his family want this? Where has this idea come from?

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 03/02/2021 20:20

All of the suggestions are out of proportion. He got a knighthood for his charitable act. Now his family will mourn him. My DH & I were reflecting that there must be some very bored people out there who want to escalate everything into an event. If they have so much time on their hands maybe they could come and homeschool my children or do some cooking/cleaning for me while I work.

RubyViolet · 03/02/2021 20:20

@DogsSausages

The tree idea is great, not everyone agrees with the Barbados trip and naming a ward could potentially upset bereaved relatives.
But l don’t think anyone would have turned that trip down, seriously would you ? If someone offered my family BA First class return flights to Barbados at £8k each and almost a month in the villa for free l would bite their hands off. Have you seen where they stayed ? www.blueskyluxury.com/barbados/holidays/property/1680/high-trees/ Now tell me you would turn that down.
GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 03/02/2021 20:23

Planting tree idea for all we have lost to Covid is a wonderful idea.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2021 20:24

@LizFlowers

Not a state funeral,he'll have a big funeral which will be televised with lots of people going to see his coffin and aariving and leaving, leaving flowers ec. That will be good.
Not with current restrictions he won't. And nor should he while no one else can. He wasn't that special.
Whattheactual20201 · 03/02/2021 20:24

I don’t really understand the hype - I mean he is wonderful of course just like everyone who raises money for different causes. I didn’t agree with fundraising for the NHS however the fact he raised money like so many others the only different is that his caught media attention and flew from there.
The reason he raised that much was due to the attention it got. I can imagine many other who have raised money over many years won’t get a state funeral.

Whattheactual20201 · 03/02/2021 20:25

@RubyViolet I would of turned it down as a family with a vulnerable person in it.

Livelovebehappy · 03/02/2021 20:26

Stupid idea. A big part of a state funeral is people lining the streets and the pomp and ceremony of it all. There’s not going to be much of that is there in the current lockdown situation. It would cost millions. And tbh we’ve already got at least two state funerals coming up in the very near future to fund. I think Prince Phillip is clinging on for dear life atm, and the queen won’t be too far behind.

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 20:27

@Quaagars

I think I've hit peak MN tonight, need to step away as it's utterly toxic on here tonight. That JS post has just about finished me off, feel urgh. Sad
That repugnant by @missrm post has been removed now thankfully.
ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 03/02/2021 20:27

Very silly question, but how would a state funeral have differed from Diana, POW's? That seemed as big an affair as you could get to me? What would happen at a state funeral?

Oldmrswasherwoman · 03/02/2021 20:27

For those mentioning planting a tree for each Covid victim this is already happening: theforestofmemories.com/about-us/

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 20:27

And yeah the toxicity on here tonight surrounding Tom Moore is awful @Quaagars

I am sick of it.

missrm · 03/02/2021 20:28

@littlepattilou you've copied it onto other threads though. You're madder than a box of frogs.

Squirrelblanket · 03/02/2021 20:28

I agree, getting a bit silly now.
