Just that really. I’ve just been sent an email from change.org asking me to sign a petition to push for a state funeral for him.
Now don’t get me wrong he was a remarkable man and an inspiration... but a state funeral? That will cost us, the taxpayer money we definitely cannot afford in the currant climate. Also I’m sure he’d rather the money go where it’s needed.

Sir Tom has had his time now. 👏 We all felt humbled by his achievement and supported the air time on that, and he got knighthood, based on media vote. Sir David deserves the state funeral.

No more threads please . Leave the family and the whole thing alone .

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/02/2021 19:37

She wasn't that worried about the cost because she accepted a ceremonial funeral, which still cost millions. She could have opted for a private family funeral, but didn't
It’s ok, don’t worry, I said I thought more of her than before but I didn’t explain how little I thought of her to start with Wink

GaryUnicorn · 03/02/2021 19:40

Facebook is full of people saying ‘we clapped for Tom’ and ‘nobody else in our street did’
For Christ’s sake, leave his family to grieve in private. He did a great thing raising all that money, which incidentally did not go to propping up the NHS. It has provided well being items for NHS staff, things like relative rooms, and equipment that patients can to use to FaceTime relatives. Things that were outside the budget remit of the NHS.

But it doesn’t make him, his life, or death, public property. How dare people start petitions suggesting how other people funerals should be conducted. His poor family probably felt they had no choice but to stand outside and clap this evening as the worlds media are parked outside their home. Poor daughter probably feels like going and wailing in a corner, but some members of the general public feel they have a right to manage her mourning.
Fuck off with the recreational grieving and virtue signalling. The best way to pay your respects is to leave the family alone.

Some might say there’s good raisin to.

LizFlowers · 03/02/2021 19:42

Not a state funeral,he'll have a big funeral which will be televised with lots of people going to see his coffin and aariving and leaving, leaving flowers ec. That will be good.

Nanny2013 · 03/02/2021 19:43

I worry about the cost of a state funeral and what would Captain Tom think?! He worked so hard to raise badly needed money for the NHS. Wouldn't this just be wrong? I believe that his family would prefer a private affair. A memorial should be considered though. Also, wouldn't a state funeral bring out thousands of people and destroy social distancing at a time when it is vital? Wouldn't Captain Tom be upset at putting more pressure on the NHS?

visitorfromtheplanetzog · 03/02/2021 19:44

Very few people ever have a state funeral anyway. I believe the last non-royal was Winston Churchill.

I imagine there will be a flypast though.

RaspberryCoulis · 03/02/2021 19:45

@Toddlerteaplease

No he absolutely does not warrant a state funeral. Winston Churchill was the last non royal to have one. And he really was a national hero. Captain Tom will be forgotten in a few weeks. His family may want a private one any way.
Absolutely this.
Livingtothefull · 03/02/2021 19:46

The idea of a state funeral is ludicrous. How would it be appropriate at a time when so many are unable to attend the funerals of their own loved ones? How could it be done during lockdown without putting people at risk? Wouldn't the several million it is likely to cost be better used for something else?

I think a memorial service for ALL those who have lost our lives, once this is all over, would be more appropriate.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/02/2021 19:47

I think Lord Mountbatten had a state funeral didn't he?

XenoBitch · 03/02/2021 19:47

There is already a train named after him. Nothing else is needed.

Bluethrough · 03/02/2021 19:47

In death we are all equal, he shouldn't get a state funeral and no one else should either.
In his case, without a pandemic, no one would have given a damn about him, his charitable efforts or his war service.

Ch4 news is about to have an item on the abuse healthcare workers are now getting on-line.

Why not focus on the living instead of the dead?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/02/2021 19:47

Cancel my previous comment. Apparently, he didn't.

StoneofDestiny · 03/02/2021 19:49

Hell no.

No statue
No State Funeral
No more clapping

Let the government plant a tree for every victim of Covid. Helps the planet, provides a space to remember all the people who died needlessly and will grow and outlive all the imbeciles in this government who let it get to this stage.

The worst thing for Captain Toms memory is that Johnson has already claimed it as his triumph. Disgraceful.

RubyViolet · 03/02/2021 19:49

Bluethrough, this Channel item is heartbreaking and frightening, these are the people that should put front and centre of our national consciousness. We owe them so much.

This. ^ The negativity and hatred (from some on here,) towards him, and people who like and support him, and want to clap for him, or have a celebration for him, is quite repugnant to see.

Let the government plant a tree for every victim of Covid.

That's a lovely idea.

BrumBoo · 03/02/2021 19:53

At this point in a global pandemic, I'd say it would be near stupid to give the Queen/Phillip a state funeral, never mind for a modest man who was pushed into the limelight for all the wrong reasons (not his actions, those took advantage of him and blew everything out of proportion).

To paraphrase one of my favourite films - 'a person is smart, people in large groups are stupid creatures'. This idea is bloody stupid, and as I said on another thread, national hysterics a la Diana.

Not just the money but the practicalities too. It would have to be socially distanced or they’d have to keep him in the fridge till the summer. I hope his family tell people they’re having a quiet family send off and that’s that.

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 19:57
