AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

Ahh lovely. I have ratten furniture, a gazebo and.. ate you ready for this, ARTIFICAL GRASS! Clutch your pearls!

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 29/01/2021 14:16

What else do you sit in in the garden ? A deckchair ? Grow up ffs , I don't care what you sit on and you shouldn't care what I sit on ffs ..
As an aside how are they unemotionally friendly , they last forever !!

pointythings · 29/01/2021 14:22

I imagine those who choose to have such things littering their outdoor spaces do not have a library or wall to wall bookshelves - indoors of course!

No, of course we don't. None of us read. Never sat outside on my tacky rattan sofa with a book, me.

DorisDances · 29/01/2021 14:28

Despise is a very strong word - now if you were referring to wind chimes, I'm in...

Apparantly cast iron bistro sets are the way to go. Or a small high backed wooden or metal dining chair. You cannot make yourself comfortable for a lengthy period.

You need to realise the garden belongs to the wildlife. You’ve no right to be there. And if you must go out there, then make sure you’re as uncomfortable as possible so you remove any temptation to dally. Then get straight back in your house so the bees and butterflies are not disturbed by your chavtastic presence. 😂

CounsellorTroi · 29/01/2021 14:37

I see those with hard iron furniture as barely being able to make it through a newspaper, therefore the discomfort of the seating doesn't matter to them.

My chairs have something like this on them. Not at all uncomfortable.

@LST not sure the artificial grass thing is the same. It’s really bad for the environment which is why I don’t like it. Don’t care what people sit on.

Jeremyironseverything · 29/01/2021 14:45

But you can't relax properly on those councillor Don't you ever sit on a sofa indoors or do you permanently sit on high back chairs? Just get rid of your indoor sofa, if your dining room table and chairs are that comfortable.

LST · 29/01/2021 14:46

@UnityUnited it was down when we moved in but we were going to have it anyway. It has been life changing for me. I'm disabled and can't manage a mower. My hairy dog doesn't get mucky either in the winter as I struggle to wipe his feet. The dc can play out all year round.

I have different garden chairs if I want to lounge. If I just want to sit out with a cup of tea and a book my table and chairs are fine.
snowliving · 29/01/2021 14:51

They look nice and for a cup of coffee and the paper perfectly comfortable.
But for an afternoon reading a book not so much.
Indoors I have dining room chairs and a sofa, they have different functions.

minipie · 29/01/2021 14:57

Seeking to be comfortable is so terribly non U.

Katiepoes · 29/01/2021 15:02

'Rattan brigade' Grin

I have very expensive 'tasteful' custom wooden garden furniture. But..I also have two rattan chairs from Lidl in the FRONT! We use them too, I suspect we'd be shunned or burned as witches in some of your neighbourhoods.

Janegrey333 · 29/01/2021 15:03

@skoobysnax

My mum calls them 'earwig hotels'
Lots of people do. So sweet.
SmellyPooHead · 29/01/2021 15:04

i have garden furniture envy now
would love to know where you all bought yours from as i am struggling to find any non grey sets

wrongleverkronk · 29/01/2021 15:04

I don't think they are very comfortable looking.

We have a cast iron dining table and chairs with a built in fire pit which I love.

But if I want to lounge around we have inflatable sofabags

brewingno2 · 29/01/2021 15:06

You sound jealous, do you want a rattan garden set ? Hmm

Janegrey333 · 29/01/2021 15:08

@Bluntness100

You probably use pesticides so the bees and the butterflies will find your garden inhospitable.

To whom is this addressed?
SewingWarriorQueen76 · 29/01/2021 15:09

Has anyone got recommendations for chairs where you can actually lounge in them. I couldn't find anywhere last year and just want to slob out reading a book.

UnityUnited · 29/01/2021 15:12

@LST I am very cruel because DP is disabled and I make him do all the sitting down jobs in the garden. I know what you mean about hairy dogs though. Mine trails mud through the house Hmm

GreenlandTheMovie · 29/01/2021 15:13

JaneGrey I imagine those who choose to have such things littering their outdoor spaces do not have a library or wall to wall bookshelves

Oh good heavens, no. I only have a library room in my town house. I keep my country home for entertaining, so simply have a bookcase in each bedroom with a varied selection of books for each Friday to Monday visitor!

I might have to invest in a garden room. It's beyond nouveau riche, but unadulterated natural sunlight is too bright to thoroughly enjoy my selection of light reading materials outdoors.

EvieBoo2 · 29/01/2021 15:13

I just couldn't be bothered to keep bringing the cushions in.

pensivepigeon · 29/01/2021 15:15

We've a few folding directors chairs I drag out when I convince myself I will like sitting outside. Years ago we used to eat outside in the evenings. I sort of do enjoy reading a book out in the garden for a bit but I hate the faff of suncream if not going for a walk or a run etc and it just doesn't seem worth it when inside is comfier. We have also pretty much given our garden to the local birds and wildlife. When we deign to sit out there and not just fill the feeders / put fresh water in the bird bath we hear a lot of 'muttering' from the bushes!

Notjustanymum · 29/01/2021 15:17

I think it says more about the OP that outdoor seating, providing a comfortable and pleasant place from which to enjoy a garden into which a lot of hard work has been spent to get it looking lovely, is considered “vulgar”.
Maybe it’s because In her world, the ladies of the house wanting to relax and enjoy, having spent a hard day working in an office, or childminding, or preparing food or doing housework, are considered vulgar in her eyes?
