AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

I have one and I hate it, DH bought it and it looked nice for a bit. Cushions are a massive pain, it also blows down the garden every time it's windy. We are getting rid (giving it away) and getting a normal table and chairs haha

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 29/01/2021 12:41

I'm really enjoying this thread are there any more like it?

I don't have a rattan sofa set because I have a metal and glass one with nothing wrong with it. I also have a swing seat and a wooden bench. And a fountain. Dead posh me.

@BitOfFun

'@1950swallpaper, Mumsnet has changed so much since the 'days of Twigs and Pebbly Shit'. Why do we have to take things so seriously?'

They've astroturfed the fields and arranged their comfy plastic sofas. I was a much nicer person in real life when we could laugh at the madness quietly here.

Janegrey333 · 29/01/2021 12:43

@badacorn

Janegrey333 sounds like you're trolling or trying too hard. Some people see gardens as a room because it's a reasonable way to use your own space, not because they are too stupid or tasteless to do otherwise.
Trolling? Trying too hard? TES bingo time again. My tastes are different to those of the rattan brigade - thankfully.

I imagine those who choose to have such things littering their outdoor spaces do not have a library or wall to wall bookshelves - indoors of course!

It’s very much down to taste. The OP has an opinion on the outdoor version of what some might call a 3 piece suite. I agree with her, as do others. Most of those have managed not to use abusive language or cheesy emojis whilst explaining why, incidentally. That speaks volumes. I don’t take the posts of such people seriously, any more than I read a post which has grammatical and spelling errors in it.

m0therofdragons · 29/01/2021 12:43

Why would anyone be so anti being comfortable in a garden? Mn is a baffling place. Mind you, my garden has a large trampoline and a hot tub under a gazebo so I don’t have any class by mn standards.

HoppingPavlova · 29/01/2021 12:44

Why would anyone want to entertain outside in the middle of winter?

Think my middle of winter and your middle of winter are quite different. We still use heater/fire pit but probably looking around 16/18 degC for daytime entertaining and 10 degC of a nightGrin. Still fine for outdoors, rugged up, heaters and some decent alcohol running through the veins.

@Averyyounggrandmaofsix ooh you would love the 4x4 thread a few days ago. People were getting very worked up on there.

I love @Janegrey333 posts - always guaranteed to be as snobby as possible!

How wrong you are! We choose to have such things and currently have wall to wall bookshelves in one very large room. It’s an immediate talking point for guests to our home. Previous house we had a formal library. Both houses we have had an outdoor sofa setting AND outdoor dining setting. I won’t even start on pool furniture....... Last house we also had a billiards game room also. Sadly, we have downsized significantly. Am quite proud of the fact we have never had a bar though. Those I find tacky. I grew up with one in the family home but never in a house of my own.

Ha, ha, ha, this is just hysterical and I assume a joke.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 29/01/2021 12:54

Ah Janegrey I can't decide whether to take you seriously or not, but it's cracking me up anyway. I'll have to look out for your posts from now on.

It's hard to keep track of all the things Jane disapproves of. It sounds stressful.

Honestly they are always funny, it’s like hyacinth bouquet on speed proclaiming how we should all decorate her homes and pitying the plebs. 😂😂😂

Still doesn't explain why you would rather sit outside on a cold night than indoors. Even with heaters and rugs. I mean, why?

I don’t particularly like it either but some of my friends do. To be fair you’re not cold with a fire going and a blanket, and it’s lovely looking at the stars, with a roaring fire and a few drinks

Anecdotal. One swallow doth not a summer make etc.
CounsellorTroi · 29/01/2021 13:40

This thread has got me thinking though - we have a converted garage and I now fancy the idea of getting a rattan sofa for it that we can put outside in the summer. I just think all year round outdoor entertaining is a massively inefficient use of energy.

Phew. For a moment I thought you were planning to put a rattan sofa in the garage. Avoid rattan, if you can. It’s everywhere.
FoolsAssassin · 29/01/2021 13:46

I am doubly tacky and common as have one at my allotment so I can sit and survey my growing vegetables whilst listening to the lambs in the field behind and the birds. My veg is fertilised by shit from my chickens that live at home , I like to watch them from my second plastic sofa on a wooden deck.

The allotment sofa is hidden behind shed so hopefully won’t cause too much trauma to unsuspecting passers by.

This could keep me entertained for hours!

So wrong, I have a lovely wall high, wall long bookshelf complete with access ladder on wheels.
Obviously those of us with lots of books need comfortable spaces indoors and out to read.
So outdoor sofas it is.

I see those with hard iron furniture as barely being able to make it through a newspaper, therefore the discomfort of the seating doesn't matter to them. 😉
