AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

OK then Hmm

Janegrey333 · 28/01/2021 19:07

I think they’re awful, too. They look cheap and I imagine the plastic rattan scratches people when it starts to disintegrate.

Janegrey333 · 28/01/2021 19:09

On the subject of gardens, why do so many people cram gardens full of stuff? “Less is more.” doesn’t seem to be followed.

minipie · 28/01/2021 19:09

I bloody love ours.

It isn’t plastic rattan. It’s so comfy. We eat and sit outdoors about 10 times as much since we got it.

There are things you probably own that I hate OP. i don’t really feel the need to start a thread about them though Hmm

DemolitionBarbie · 28/01/2021 19:11

Yanbu to not have one, but despise? That's a bit much huh?

wellthatsunusual · 28/01/2021 19:11

Smug is quite a description to apply to a piece of furniture. Quite a strange description.

badpuma · 28/01/2021 19:11

We have a nice solid wooden set (not rattan). It is brilliant for my mum (it's okay Covid police, she lives with us) as she can actually sit down and enjoy the outside comfortably despite severely restricted mobility.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2021 19:12

How??

CoRhona · 28/01/2021 19:13

I want to get one, for exactly the reason pp said - to spend more time outside.

MiniCooperLover · 28/01/2021 19:13

You sound jealous OP. We have a lovely metal set that we use when the weather is good, I love them 🤷‍♀️

WorraLiberty · 28/01/2021 19:13

Weird thread

Designed to make people who have them feel a bit shit perhaps?

If you don't like them, don't buy them.

I don't so I didn't.

Ch3rish · 28/01/2021 19:14

I can't imagine ever having such a strong opinion on garden furniture but also of course you aren't unreasonable to have your own opinion whatever it is on any trivial thing you like. No need to change even if everyone disagrees with you.

Jeremyironseverything · 28/01/2021 19:14

I use the garden so much more. It's like an extra room in the house but outside. Yabu.

ThereOnceWasANote · 28/01/2021 19:15

My current petty garden hate is for outside lights. 2 of our neighbours have done up their back gardens and filled them with lights. Every night they have them on. Doesn't matter if they are in their garden - they just have the whole space lit up. Whyyyyyyyy?????

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/01/2021 19:15

I've got one, but it's not wicker, it's metal and rope. It is grey butbits all I could get in lockdown. Nowhere had anything else in stck and it wasn't my first choice. Looks really nice actually.i haven't brought the ushions in though. They will probably be ruined buy the time the sun comes back.
Weord to be so annoyed by what someone else has in their garden to sit on Confused

Why not?
TalskiddyTreacleMiner · 28/01/2021 19:19

I love ours. We spend so much more time outside now we have it. The cushions are made of water repellant stuff so you don't really need to bring them in if it suddenly starts to rain. We've had it at least 4 years now, it's lived outside all that time and shows no sign of disintegrating at all. YABU OP.

AliceMadHatter · 28/01/2021 19:20

I love my garden furniture, we spend a lot of time outside when we can so want comfort. We also entertain in the garden (before covid).

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 19:21

The garden lights are probably solar ones that just come on in the evening.

I LOVE my outdoor sofa and dining furniture. It's not rattan or plastic, and it's on a large terrace so isn't crammed in anywhere. We spent so much time out there last Summer, (we've got a fire-pit too, no doubt someone will come along to hate those in a minute).

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2021 19:23

Odd thing to start a thread about. I think just don’t have one if you despise them.

ShalomToYouJackie · 28/01/2021 19:23

I have a plastic rattan armchair, coffee table and bench in the garden and I love it

AdelaideK · 28/01/2021 19:23

Vulgar? Hmm

LubaLuca · 28/01/2021 19:23

If the sofa type seats are more comfortable than other types, I can't see why there's any reason to dislike them. Perhaps they encourage people to make more use of their garden. I've never sat on one so I don't know if they are comfy, but they do look it.

Towelrailfail · 28/01/2021 19:23

My neighbours had one. Complete with gazebo and some heater thing. It got totally trashed in the rain. They replaced it with green plastic garden furniture.

I think mine is meant to be a sofa? But to me it is a chair. It's metal frame with a plastic seat. The set was cheap from Asda and I don't need to rescue it from the elements.

ConcreteUnderpants · 28/01/2021 19:23

I have been after some of the exact furniture you described for ages, OP. What do people do about the cushions though?? Put them in the shed during winter?
