AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

@ConcreteUnderpants
It was only £1500
And the common family come with it, on a sale or return basis.

BarbarAnna · 28/01/2021 21:10

Yep, see also outdoor rugs! Shoot me now.

blahblahmeh · 28/01/2021 21:10

I love mine. Comfy, looks smart, needed something to sit on and eat at.
Taking the cushions off for winter takes 5 minutes, put them in the storage bag and put it in the shed.

BEANBAG765 · 28/01/2021 21:10

@BarbarAnna Similar story here. We started with wooden decking that lasted 4 years. After all that oiling and splinters, we moved on to composite decking...to match the plastic rattan I guess ;-)

Marinaloves · 28/01/2021 21:10

@BEANBAG765
Do you live in a cul de sac
Sounds like it Wink

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:12

I'll do you a cocktail Concrete, what do you fancy?

movingonup20 · 28/01/2021 21:13

I've got a balcony and I really want a sofa for it. I don't care about what it looks like to others

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:13

From my tacky and gauche cocktail dresser.

BarbarAnna · 28/01/2021 21:14

We also had wooden decking, which was gnawed by rats! But at least it wasn’t common plastic!

Marinaloves · 28/01/2021 21:16

@ShrikeAttack
Tbf
I’d come to your house for a drink (in winter)

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:16

My terrace is stone I'll have you know!

Covidcorvid · 28/01/2021 21:17

I’d love one but can’t get round to getting a patio built.

They have such sets at my club. Obviously nice ones. They’re very comfy and not scratchy or cheap. I can happily spend the day loafing about on one while getting drinks brought out to me. 😁

Tellmetruth4 · 28/01/2021 21:18

Am I your tacky neighbour?!! I have a brown modular set which you can put a cover over so the cushions don’t get wet.

It was great during lockdown but we’ve had it a few years. We keep it in good condition due to the cover. Use it all the time in lovely weather from coffees in the morning to BBQs. Great purchase.

We also have electric garden lights. Had solar a couple of years ago but they weren’t very good so got an electrician round. It’s lovely looking out the back, it’s almost magical.

Happy more people are making an effort with their back gardens now. Overgrown gardens with old toys and broken furniture used to be more common and depressing to look at.

Anyway OP you don’t have to sit on them so why are you so exercised? Strange.

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:20

And you'd be welcome @Marinaloves.

I suspect you'd like my terrace too!

BEANBAG765 · 28/01/2021 21:22

Just to add that I often considered an outdoor rug. Not sure why. Perhaps a common bad taste.
What raised some eyebrows though...I decided to wash my indoor rug with the water jet last summer. On the patio....it was left to dry there for few days.
I guess COVID got the best of me!

Thismustbelove · 28/01/2021 21:26

They are something every Hincher has so I see your point OP. They aren’t attractive and don’t look particularly comfortable. I imagine they belong to owners of grey carpets and walls too. A nice comfortable reclining lounger looks a million times better.

dancinfeet · 28/01/2021 21:31

If we had one the neighbour's cats would shit all over it as soon as we weren't looking. My daughter had a sun lounger out in the summer, nipped inside to the loo for a couple of mins came back to a steaming great turd in the middle of the cushion. We have a garden table they shit on that too, and the chairs. If we put plastic covers over any garden furniture they shit on that. And in any plant pots we have at the front or back of the house.

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:32

The only reason OP would be excoriating her neighbours so severely is if they live cheek'b'jowl.

Are your neighbours very close OP?

Lucieintheskye · 28/01/2021 21:43

Yanbu! They're hideous and uncomfortable. We have an outdoor dining table (that isn't made of hideous glass and grey rattan-y plastic) and a couple of wooden deckchairs. Swing seat on the back porch is as sofa-y as we get outdoors.

ShrikeAttack · 28/01/2021 21:46

Mine is very attractive and there is nothing grey in my house (other than one armchair) @Thismustbelove.

I'm the world's most stupendous arsehole at times, but I'd never sneer at something other people like.

What's the benefit there? Empty self-aggradisment, because you're not sure about yourself.

Just let people enjoy things. Don't be a dick. Not liking things doesn't make you a better or more superior person.

Woodlandbelle · 28/01/2021 21:50

I couldn't care less what others have but where we live it very wet and tends to rain what feels like everyday

So we are going for a solid wood set that we can treat and leave out and no cushions
But if we lived in a warmer climate I would love it

Scarlettpixie · 28/01/2021 21:52

Well seeing as 3 of the properties which boarder our garden have a hot tub I don’t feel particularly showy offey with my grey outdoor sofa. It wasn’t expensive and I sit out so much more in the summer for having it. Said neighbours have a collection of gazebos, heaters, lights and garden furniture. Each to their own. Why begrudge people enjoying theit outside space, especially over the past year where there is nowhere to go!

ScrambledSmegs · 28/01/2021 21:56

My neighbours got some last summer and they're great. Made me want some. They're not grey and they're very comfortable. Must ask them where they got them.

FamBae · 28/01/2021 22:01

I love ours, it was the best decision we made last summer, lovely alfresco lunches and hours curled up with a book on the sofa, and light enough for me to be able to move it around the garden. Luckily we are not overlooked, I would hate to offend the garden police.

Marinaloves · 28/01/2021 22:02

@dancinfeet
Those cats have a vendetta you must have done something
