To think this rude comment was unwarranted? (Supermarket rage!)

Just popped to the supermarket for a few bits and on exiting the checkouts I come out behind an elderly lady with another woman walking with her side by side (probably her daughter). It’s about 50ft to the exit and the elderly lady is walking extremely slowly holding onto a trolley (no problem with her at all), the other woman with her is walking at the same pace and blocking the walkway (she was rather large) so there’s a queue of us behind them.

As the area widened I walked quickly around them, a good distance from the elderly lady, and sped up to the entrance hearing the other woman shout loudly ‘some people can’t wait for other people can they’. I turned as I heard her (as did everyone else) and wanted to say that she should have moved to the side and walked single file behind the older lady if she had any manners but didn’t bother and just shook my head.

AIBU to think that if you’re walking with a slow moving person, you should move to the side rather than hold up everyone else and then take umbrage if someone overtakes you Angry.

Could you not have just waited? Like, two minutes

Maireas · 15/01/2021 17:14

Why were you in such a rush? Just wait.

Givemeabreak88 · 15/01/2021 17:16

😂 typical MN responses

Yanbu op

Hoiking · 15/01/2021 17:16

I'm with you OP, but women have to be kiiiind Hmm so expect a pasting.

HikeForward · 15/01/2021 17:16

It infuriates me too, especially when I’m rushing to work and they only let you in and out of the supermarket at intervals!

ExclamationPerfume · 15/01/2021 17:16

You were rude and impatient.

Maybe the elderly lady couldn't shop on her own.

Samcro · 15/01/2021 17:17

The older lady who was moving slowly would be hardly able to shop alone.

Saxineno · 15/01/2021 17:17

I would have done the same. YANBU

sadpapercourtesan · 15/01/2021 17:18

I think its pretty obvious why the elderly woman wasn't shopping alone.

Nothing wrong with you slipping round them and carrying on with your day, though. It's not as though you barged her out of the way. The younger woman was being ridiculous.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/01/2021 17:18

It's rude to block people in to have to spend extra time in a shop when the only thing person has to do is to walk behind their company
😂 Rude fgs😂
Op yanbu

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2021 17:19

'Large' people in supermarkets. How very dare they. Hmm

CrossFitAddict · 15/01/2021 17:19

I did wait! Then when there was room to walk round them I did. I walk fast naturally.

On hearing her comment it was obvious she knew what she was doing Hmm.

Bloody pissed off that someone wanted to create a problem over nothing with a complete stranger. She was lucky I was in a good mood!

OP posts:
PickleThePenguin · 15/01/2021 17:19

I would have done the same thing. As I fast walker I find it frustrating to get behind someone slow and hogging the space. (Obviously if it's a narrow space I will wait)

WorraLiberty · 15/01/2021 17:20

I voted YABU but only because you should've said that to her instead of shaking your head 🤷‍♀️

It would've been a perfectly reasonable and polite response.

NurseButtercup · 15/01/2021 17:20

I would have done the same

EileenGC · 15/01/2021 17:21

YANBU. I would've done that too

Bluntness100 · 15/01/2021 17:21

I’m with you on this one op. Why was it on you to wait and not her to move to single file. She was the one causing the issue. So she should have moved.

lovemelongtime · 15/01/2021 17:21

I had the same walking up the station steps. Had been walking slowly so as not to overcrowd or rush the very slow person in front who was hogging the middle , but then when there was a space took over. To receive a tut and a "patience is a virtue". I had been patient and you were being inconsiderate and rude!

peachesandclean · 15/01/2021 17:21

jesus christ these replies

of course you're not being unreasonable
the only way you would is if you said something about how slow she was as you passed, but you didn't, you minded your own business and went on with your day

it's only polite to be mindful of other people, they should have let you past no problem

Ponoka7 · 15/01/2021 17:21

Each household is entitled to do their own shopping. It's couples and whole families who they are trying to get to shop alone.

I would have just ignored the woman completely and carried on with my day.

Samcro · 15/01/2021 17:21

This thread is really funny , thank you op

SomewhatBored · 15/01/2021 17:21

Some people go through life looking for confrontation - sounds like you had the misfortune to meet one, OP.

dudsville · 15/01/2021 17:22

I would have done the same except for the look back. ,ton

Sparklingbrook · 15/01/2021 17:25

To think this rude comment was unwarranted? (Supermarket rage!)
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 15/01/2021 17:25

Irritating, and rude if there was space to walk around , but the older woman probably needed support?

Had a mad one in the supermarket queue at the weekend - I was behind a woman, possibly slightly short of 2m, but I don't think so - she was crowded up less than a metre away from the people in front of her, but kept muttering at me v loudly that I needed to keep my distance, all the while creeping up on the people in front of her until she was practically sitting in their basket.
