For the price of one meal from Nandos just done a meal for 4.

All bought from Asda as I was craving Nandos but couldnt justify the cost as we are currently on benefits thanks to covid redundancy.

4 pack of chicken breasts, £5.
Pack of Nandos marinade £1
Nandos peri peri salt £2
Bag of oven chips £1.50
Nandos Peri flavoured mayo £1-£2 (cant remember)
Pack of nan bread £0.45

And Oh My God it was LUSH!! Tasted just as good as the real thing but felt better as it was a quarter of the cost of 4 meals from there! And next time it will be cheaper as I wont need the salt or the mayo.

And before anyone asks, no I dont work for them, wish I did :o

I make a fake nandos using the same ingredients every fortnight. We love it and so much cheaper

MaskingForIt · 11/01/2021 20:01

Newsflash
Home cooked food is cheaper and nicer than fast food. Shocker. Quick, get the DM to publish this one!

CatVsChristmasTree · 11/01/2021 20:06

@mumnowformerrockstar

I've never been to Nando's
Me neither. Sound like my kind of food, but like PP I'd rather save £30 and make my own if it's that easy. Similarly, I don't like paying out for 'pub grub' as I can make most of the dishes better at home and cheaper for 5 than the price of one pub meal. I pay a lot for a decent curry a few times a year, but that's because although I can make a good curry, it takes me all afternoon and I can't make 5 different ones plus 5 naans and several different rice dishes in an hour. I reckon I could make this 'nandos' in less than that!
Jbck · 11/01/2021 20:08

If anyone knows where to get the same rolls, my life would be made.

Dreamstosell · 11/01/2021 20:10

Anyone invented a fake Nandos beanie wrap? Would love that (veggies here)

lazeeboy · 11/01/2021 20:23

Good on you OP.

And a significantly lower risk of food poisoning (allegedly, anecdotally, in my opinion etc).

CommanderBurnham · 11/01/2021 20:25

We do this! Corn on the cob, the works!

Trying to perfect the peri nuts at the moment.

We have really got into fakeaways. We regularly do Wagamama, TGI and pizza express. Also got a kfc recipe to try as well.

Robbybobtail · 11/01/2021 20:26

I’m sorry I don’t know what I’m supposed to be voting for but that sounds great!

Grin Grin Grin

I’m well getting all that in my next Asda shop - didn’t even know they did Nando’s stuff!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2021 20:27

@MrsBeltane

But you have to cook it yourself.
Well, sticking ready made marinade on some chicken and putting it in the oven with some chips is hardly cooking and as the OP says, is considerably cheaper.

If I'm paying restaurant prices, I want something that I can't easily do myself, not this sort of low effort low skill food.

plus3 · 11/01/2021 20:35

Fake Nando’s always a winner

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 11/01/2021 20:39

Love a fake Nando's. I don't think it quite compares, as they flame grill their chicken, but it's close. Plus I'm happy whenever I don't have to cook, and you can get unlimited, watered-down diet coke.

I make the spicy rice. There are a few recipes online that are spot on. Or I do the Aldi sweet potato fries as a side as they are lovely.

Inpersuitofhappiness · 11/01/2021 20:43

@Jbck

I always use the part baked small rolls. Aldi do them in a blue bag for about 70pence. Most places do similar.

DD loves their garlic bread, so for her I cut in half and slather in garlic, butter and a little bit of herb before throwing in the oven.

Womencanlift · 11/01/2021 20:44

I’m impressed OP that you have got to 4 pages without the AIBU ‘this is not an AIBU’ police turning up Smile

Anyway I’m loving this Nando’s chat. Did you know you can make your own peri-naise by mixing mayonnaise and sweet chilli sauce. It’s lovely and you may already have those at home.

For ages they stopped selling it in supermarkets and that’s when I read about the Mayo/sweet chilli combo

TGI sesame chicken recipe including the dipping sauce? That’s more my kind of thing if you wouldn’t mind sharing!
orangenasturtium · 11/01/2021 20:50

Iceland sell TGI Friday's branded items @TimeToCloseTheDoor And Greggs.

I can't vouch for them as I haven't tried them but I spotted them when sending an emergency lockdown order to DM last March and reminisced about happy teenage memories of the TGI Friday's on Leicester Square Grin

FenEel · 11/01/2021 20:56

I really don’t get thelove for Nandos, my kids love it so we have been a few times but I just find it so meh. But then I don’t like KFC either. Maybe I just find chicken boring!

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2021 21:05

@Lindtballsrock I just kind of Googled 3 or 4 recipes and went with a mix of 2.

Definitely double dip the coating though, as it makes it extra crispy.

Before my grandpa passed away he always had a fresh Greggs sausage roll on a Friday. One week my mum bought a pack out of Iceland for easiness and my grandpa, who didn’t know what day it was or who anyone was, knew immediately that it wasn’t a fresh Greggs sausage roll.

Might sound stupid but I always laugh at that memory and seeing the look on his face when he tried it Smile

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/01/2021 21:13

thanks for reminding me that my chips were still in the oven Grin
not toooo crispy.

Take a look at the ingredients in the nando branded stuff - probably even cheaper to play around with recreating the spices yourself.
I love coating chips with smoked paprika and salt before I cook them - delicious.

the ‘this is not an AIBU’ police I had a post removed the other day simply because I'd had the temerity to suggest that simply jumping on a thread with "this is not an AIBU" is akin to correcting someone's punctuation.

Could have easily been phrased as an AIBU - the poor OP just needed some sympathy /empathy /space to air her frustration.
I'm definitely going to report the next one I see, rather than comment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/01/2021 21:28

😋😋😋😋😋😋. I've never even been to Nandos. I haven't lived have I.

VintageStitchers · 11/01/2021 21:34

Must admit, I’m another odd bod that doesn't get the love for Nando’s/KFC/McDonalds etc.?

Much prefer a tasty Indian curry if I’m buying a takeaway, which is pretty rare as there are none local to where we live.

coldestfeetever · 12/01/2021 09:11

I love their bake in a bag spice mix, but the first ingredient is sugar! 😱 I'm sure their in store food isn't any better though

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/01/2021 09:23

Loving Faux-Nandos, although I now cant get that song out of my head :o

I posted because the kids love Nandos and although I could get takeaway, since my redundancy I simply cant afford it. It wasnt supposed to be a smug "Did you know its cheaper to cook your own" thread, we all know that already! I was just genuinely impressed at how nice it was. OK so it will not be exactly the same as the genuine article but for the price and low effort involved, it is a decent alternative for those of us with holes in our pockets!

Inpersuitofhappiness I find them a cross between those and a brioche roll. Tried to fool DD with a brioche and garlic butter 😃
