For the price of one meal from Nandos just done a meal for 4.

All bought from Asda as I was craving Nandos but couldnt justify the cost as we are currently on benefits thanks to covid redundancy.

4 pack of chicken breasts, £5.
Pack of Nandos marinade £1
Nandos peri peri salt £2
Bag of oven chips £1.50
Nandos Peri flavoured mayo £1-£2 (cant remember)
Pack of nan bread £0.45

And Oh My God it was LUSH!! Tasted just as good as the real thing but felt better as it was a quarter of the cost of 4 meals from there! And next time it will be cheaper as I wont need the salt or the mayo.

And before anyone asks, no I dont work for them, wish I did :o

I’m sorry I don’t know what I’m supposed to be voting for but that sounds great!

If you like their rice, cook it in some Peri Peri seasoning (the dry one) with some tomato purée, it’s delicious. 1.5 times the amount of water to rice, ten mins boil with lid and ten mins steam with lid but not on heat. Perfection.

NastyBlouse · 11/01/2021 17:35

I can't make Nando's at home because the shop-bought sauces don't seem to marinade the same way the restaurants do it. Also I can't grill the chicken at a sufficiently high temperature because it sets my smoke alarms off.

However my contribution to the thread is this method to make remarkably Nando's-esque chips...

  • Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees C (180 fan), including a baking tray with a little oil in it
  • Cut potatoes into chips (can leave skins on) and blanch in hot water for about four minutes
  • Drain blanched chips and spread over the pre-heated tray
  • This is the magic bit -- coat with a 50/50 mix of smoked paprika and dried oregano. I do about 2 to 3 tsp for enough for two people
  • Add some ground black pepper and, if wanted, a little salt (optional) Stir about to mix the chips in with the spices
  • Cook for about 25 minutes, turn them about halfway through to stop them sticking

You can get the nandos sauces too - bigger bottle but £4 bottle lasts 10ish meals (should be more but it's so moreish!)

Nothing to vote for.... sorry!! I always forget to remove the voting option!

Thanks for the recipe!

@NastyBlouse

I sliced the chicken breast to make two steaks (for want of a better word) and left it to marinade all day following a tip online. Then I dry fried them slowly until cooked and whacked up the heat for the last couple of minutes to char the outside.

fake Nandos is the DCs favourite. We had it last night. You need to add some halloumi and some corn on the cob.

LemonSquirtInTheEyeOfLife · 11/01/2021 17:41

Thanks for the recipe recommendations! I really fancy going to Nando's, it looks (& smells) quite good when we go past, but we just can't justify the price. Will look out for the seasoning in the supermarket!

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/01/2021 17:42

@LemonSquirtInTheEyeOfLife it was all in the condiments aisle at Asda, Tesco do them too so I would assume all the others do.

I think the real reason not to eat Nando's is that they don't use free range chicken in their over priced stuffed pitta breads.

MrsBeltane · 11/01/2021 17:43

But you have to cook it yourself.

PersilOrAriel · 11/01/2021 17:43

Or try the Nando’s bake in bag. It’s a paper bag with Nando’s seasoning In it. You add the chicken, shake it up and whack it in the oven.

The chicken is so moist and tasty. One of the few meals every one of the fussy family will eat. Serve in ciabatta rolls.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/01/2021 17:43

@2typesofjungle

Well to be fair, neither do I. But then I am not charging £12 for a butterfly chicken breast and 2 very cheaps sides!

Listen, for a saving of £30, I would kill the the fucking chicken myself if necessary!

I'm such a cheapskate I make my own. It's pretty easy, just stick red peppers, onions and the spice mix in the blender.

mumnowformerrockstar · 11/01/2021 17:46

I've never been to Nando's

Affor · 11/01/2021 17:46

Sounds great OP!

But my immediate reaction is why is Asda so expensive for chicken?!

pelosi · 11/01/2021 17:47

I've never been able to get that Nando's peri peri umami anywhere else, even at home with Nando's sauce. I compromise by only getting Nando's every othe rmonth. no idea if umami is the right word but all the YT bloggers use it

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/01/2021 17:48

£4.89 for 4 really good sized fresh breasts isnt bad is it? I would normally buy frozen ones from Aldi which are cheaper but also full of water so false economy as you need to use more.

OP posts:
gettingonmylastnerve · 11/01/2021 17:50

You need to do the peas too!

Petit poi's with butter and mint and a tiny bit of lazy chilli and then mash the pea's up a bit.

pelosi · 11/01/2021 17:52

Sounds about right for 4 good sized breasts. My local butcher does 5kg of chicken breasts for £25, that's about 20 breasts. 2kg of breasts are £11.

Trying81 · 11/01/2021 17:55

M&S do a chilli jam which is the closest I’ve had to the one Nando’s serve with Halloumi - less than £2 I think and will do a few portions

Uncle Bens mixed pepper rice is a good spicy rice alternative too

We love a homemade Nando’s, have it at least once a week

NastyBlouse · 11/01/2021 17:56

Four chicken breasts for under a bluey is pretty good value in my book.

Pugdoglife · 11/01/2021 17:56

Yabu.....for suggesting it because now I've got to add this to my next shopping list 😋

Affor · 11/01/2021 17:58

I get 6 fresh (1kg) for £5 from Sains so I was comparing to that. Sorry to derail!

RylanClark · 11/01/2021 18:02

Morrisons brought out a couple of frozen sides, I think it was rice, peas and chips but not totally sure, that were a copy of nandos sides according to the Instagram posts I read.
