For the price of one meal from Nandos just done a meal for 4.

All bought from Asda as I was craving Nandos but couldnt justify the cost as we are currently on benefits thanks to covid redundancy.

4 pack of chicken breasts, £5.
Pack of Nandos marinade £1
Nandos peri peri salt £2
Bag of oven chips £1.50
Nandos Peri flavoured mayo £1-£2 (cant remember)
Pack of nan bread £0.45

And Oh My God it was LUSH!! Tasted just as good as the real thing but felt better as it was a quarter of the cost of 4 meals from there! And next time it will be cheaper as I wont need the salt or the mayo.

And before anyone asks, no I dont work for them, wish I did :o

Don't use the marinade, get the spice mix, throw a few tbsp of oil in a bowl with it.
Stab the chicken breast portions several times, then toss the chicken in the spice & oil mix.
Leave it for a few hours+ in the fridge, covered by tinfoil.
You don't end up with the chilli seed bits which are annoying I think.

Makes the chicken more like nandos.

If you have a George foreman, cook it in that.

IfTheSockFits · 11/01/2021 18:05

My adult dd has been doing HomeNando's for some time. Last time she did it, she collected about 80,000 online followers. Smile

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2021 18:08

Sounds lovely OP, I'll definitely give it a go, except for the over chips. I like mine in the deep fat fryer.

Have you tried making your own 'KFC' fillet burgers too? I was bored during lockdown 1 and gave them a go. Honestly, they were amazing and the coating very similar.

WorraLiberty · 11/01/2021 18:08

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 11/01/2021 18:11

I do it with chicken thighs, and get brioche buns, spinach and red pepper chutney with the mayo to make the 'sunset burger'. Also make my own spicy rice by frying onion and red pepper, adding turmeric, smoked paprika and chilli flakes then adding chicken stock and rice. Put a lid on and leave it on the lowest heat on the hop for 10 or 15 minutes and add peas near the end.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 11/01/2021 18:11

I do a version of macho peas. Put frozen peas on to cook and smash up a combo of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, a bit of tomato puree and either fresh chilli or dried flakes. When the peas are cooked half smash them up with the dressing. Also works with French beans etc. Amazing.

Nara2k · 11/01/2021 18:12

Spicy rice via pinch of nom - gorgeous pinchofnom.com/recipes/nandos-spicy-rice/ thanks for the tips Grin

Flaunch · 11/01/2021 18:13

Macho peas are super easy too - fresh mint and parsley with chilli chopped up small and stir in to cooked peas and mash with a potato masher.

We love fake Nando’s too 😍

Mogwaimug · 11/01/2021 18:15

I must admit I don't get the fuss about Nandos. If I want a carry out, I want a big fat greasy kebab or a domino's. Not a bit of chicken.

That aside, I always buy their marinade sauces. I cook the chicken in the oven wrapped in foil. It's not all charred, but I like it.

HappyThursdays · 11/01/2021 18:17

omg that sounds delicious

I have the big bottle of the medium marinade - do they sell the spice mix in the supermarkets too?

Maladicta · 11/01/2021 18:18

We love a btec Nando’s, we got sent some cards from them in the first lockdown and they use the rub, roast them then finish off on a griddle to get the sear marks.

Ilovecaviar · 11/01/2021 18:20

Great thread, thanks for the ideas. Definitely going on my shopping list this week 😊

MustBeThin · 11/01/2021 18:22

I feel like the only person on the planet that hasn't ever had a Nandos, perhaps I should try making it myself. 🤔 Never had Subway either Blush

BrowncoatWaffles · 11/01/2021 18:28

I have just added a tonne of bits to my online shop for this week now... and I’m not eating dinner tonight until at least 8pm and already want to gnaw my own arm off!

swimlyn · 11/01/2021 18:36

MrsBeltane
But you have to cook it yourself.

LOL! Oooooohhhhh Nooooooo! Grin Grin

@PyongyangKipperbang
Listen, for a saving of £30, I would kill the fucking chicken myself if necessary!

Ha ha! Well said! Smile

Nandos were good when first around various towns/cities, but for many years now, insanely priced for us.

There really is nothing over-complicated about their dishes…

ShalomToYouJackie · 11/01/2021 18:37

What's the nan bread for?

Fakeaway Nandos used to be DPs fave when I ate meat, he will have perinaise with everything.

I used to do ours in a ciabatta roll... and now I want a Nando's!

WeAllHaveWings · 11/01/2021 18:40

Ds loves the peri peri salt on his chips. We use the nandos hot rub and if it's nice too with a huge pile of good/homemade coleslaw rather than mayo. It is his favourite meal of the week,

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2021 18:40

I've never tried Nando's - but I will now.

@WorraLiberty ooh can you link to a recipe? I’d love to do KFC at home!
Dagnabit · 11/01/2021 18:42

I’m going to do this - we have used the Nando’s meal kits a few times and they are nice.

And also - @NastyBlouse - under a bluey... Grin

Can't have nandos without the nan Grin
ElectricEels · 11/01/2021 18:47

If you put the marinade on boneless skinless chicken thighs and barbecue it's insanely good.

wizzbangfizz · 11/01/2021 18:51

I think I need to know more about the fake chicken fillet burger...

wildraisins · 11/01/2021 18:59

Sounds yummy :)

However obviously when you go to Nando's you are paying for more than just the food. You're paying to go out to a restaurant (or a takeaway to your home), to have someone source and make the food for you and serve it/ deliver it... so of course it's going to cost more.

But great that you have found an alternative for lockdown :)

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/01/2021 19:01

Are you training to become a tabloid journalist?

Doing your own cooking is cheaper than paying someone to cook for you - Shocker!

Here I detail how to cook for yourself and save money [while promoting our sponsor - ed]!
