For the price of one meal from Nandos just done a meal for 4.

All bought from Asda as I was craving Nandos but couldnt justify the cost as we are currently on benefits thanks to covid redundancy.

4 pack of chicken breasts, £5.
Pack of Nandos marinade £1
Nandos peri peri salt £2
Bag of oven chips £1.50
Nandos Peri flavoured mayo £1-£2 (cant remember)
Pack of nan bread £0.45

And Oh My God it was LUSH!! Tasted just as good as the real thing but felt better as it was a quarter of the cost of 4 meals from there! And next time it will be cheaper as I wont need the salt or the mayo.

And before anyone asks, no I dont work for them, wish I did :o

I’m sure it didn’t taste the same but it’s nice you feel you have a substitute.

Unless you have a hot grill plate at home, in which case I’m wrong (although if you had a proper one I’m not sure you’d be looking for a cheaper version of Nando’s)

Standrewsschool · 11/01/2021 19:17

As a result of this thread, just ordered the components on my Internet order. Always nice to have different ideas to cook.

BabbleBee · 11/01/2021 19:19

That’s sorted out a meal for next week!

Mmn654123 · 11/01/2021 19:21

I don’t understand Nando’s. I went twice. First time because everyone raves about it. Chicken was dry and not very tasty. Second time to a different branch to see if first time was just bad luck. Chicken was dry and not very tasty.

Is there a trick to getting the good food that I’m missing? What is tasty?

ChikiTIKI · 11/01/2021 19:21

You know its way cheaper to make your own spice mixes.
I voted YABU because everyone knows how cheap it is to cook chicken and chips, and how expensive it is to buy the same in a restaurant.

However I don't mean to be a dick... I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your meal.

MorganKitten · 11/01/2021 19:22

If you have a Costco card you can get giant Nando’s sauce bottles, I got 3 for £5 last week.

Pumpkinstace · 11/01/2021 19:24

We have homemade nandos a lot.

We call it Faux-nandos

Jhust · 11/01/2021 19:25

Ahahaha @PyongyangKipperbang

ivykaty44 · 11/01/2021 19:26

but we go out to eat as we don't want to cook, or we get a takeaway for the same reason.

my daughter cooked Nandos a few times during lockdown 1 and made it with mash potato. DD just used the marinade and often prepared ahead when the shopping arrived and froze the marinaded chicken.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 11/01/2021 19:26

Nothing beats Nando's peri chips, sorry. The ones made at home just aren't the same.

The marinades and sauces sold in supermarkets aren't the same as the ones they use in the restaurants either.

ivykaty44 · 11/01/2021 19:28

dd trick with mash potato was to use an electric whisk after mashing the potato - apparently this works in a similar way to a ricer - mash was good through

FrostedCranberries · 11/01/2021 19:30

Sorry, not the same unless you grill the chicken.

Confusedandshaken · 11/01/2021 19:32

@Trying81

M&S do a chilli jam which is the closest I’ve had to the one Nando’s serve with Halloumi - less than £2 I think and will do a few portions

Uncle Bens mixed pepper rice is a good spicy rice alternative too

We love a homemade Nando’s, have it at least once a week

I make a homemade chilli jam that is pretty close to the Nando's one. I've attached a link to the recipe.

Some of the ingredients listed in the link are a bit pretentious. I use ordinary white sugar I buy in bulk at Costco, white vinegar from Poundland and bog standard chopped tomatoes. In something so powerfully flavoured there is no advantage to using posh sugar, vinegar or tomatoes. If I buy the peppers and chillis at the market I can make 12 jars for about £6. The only drawback is that it is so delicious my friends and relations all want their own supply so I have to make it often.

I love a Nando's but have never managed to get DH to queue! Thinking I might see if I can persuade him to try a few of these ideas. Thanks Blush

Ah so it’s the chips that taste good? Not the chicken? I didn’t try the chips. Maybe that’s where I went wrong.......
famousforwrongreason · 11/01/2021 19:42

What's in peri peri salt?

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 11/01/2021 19:43

The garlic bread covered in wil herb sauce is good too.

Nando’s chips are just bog standard McCain chips, with the peri peri salt that you can buy.

I guess maybe they taste better if they deep fry them and you use oven chips at home.

I know that yet somehow they still taste better Blush.
ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 11/01/2021 19:52

Meant wild herb sauce before not wil herb...

Blankscreen · 11/01/2021 19:55

We have home made nandos quite regularly.

For 5 of us it costs circa £80 to eat in.
I butterfly chicken breasts and oven them with marinade on and then quickly griddle them either side to give them a chargrilled flavour .

Uncle Ben's Mexican rice is 👍 and m and s coleslaw is much nicer than the horrible stuff they serve in Nandos

I always but the Nandos brand sauces- supermarket own bramds just don't taste quite the same.

Think I might do this for dinner tomorrow night now x

LilMidge01 · 11/01/2021 19:57

If you wanna save more money, get chicken thighs (or drumsticks) instead of breast- can get like 8 for £1.80 in Sainsbury's and I personally think they also taste better because you've got skin and bone still there, making it even more like real nandos

Coffeekisses · 11/01/2021 19:59

You don’t even need the marinade - couple tsp chilli flakes, oregano, paprika, olive oil and squeezed lime will do the trick. Yum!
