AIBU to want a sofa in the kitchen!?

It’s not an open plan kitchen/diner or kitchen/living room - it is literally just a decent-sized but not massive kitchen. My family are protesting that sofas just don’t go in the kitchen but I think a little sofa and maybe a small coffee table in the corner would be a nice place to sit. Morning coffee, somewhere comfy for guests/family when someone is cooking and more out of the way than someone sitting at the island while it is covered in food prep etc. What about a rug? Do people have those in the kitchen? Again, my family say no but it would be way across the room from the cooking area.

I think that sounds lovely. Nice to sit and read a magazine while you're waiting on something to cook.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 02/01/2021 09:09

I see no issue with either. I quite like rugs in kitchens (flat weave) so easier to shake off and keep clean.

Gonkytonk · 02/01/2021 09:11

Sounds lovely. Get leather so it doesn’t absorb cooking smells as easily maybe? Nice washable rug. I’d do it for sure.

TopTabby · 02/01/2021 09:11

Definitely do it! I would if I had room. The rest of your family probably don't spend as much time in the kitchen as you do, it'd be perfect for a quick sit down while you're busy or just want to have a bit of time away from the main living area/telly etc!

TheSockMonster · 02/01/2021 09:12

Sofa sounds fine.

I have a flatweave inside/outside rug under my dining room table and it’s very easy to keep clean.

Go for it!

I have a kitchen sofa, in an area with bare walls, so not a fitted cupboards bit. It's great as you say! Family and guests can perch and chat to the cook, the cook can curl up and read while keeping an eye on the potatoes boiling. I like the idea of a little rug.

kavalkada · 02/01/2021 09:13

Well, it sounds lovely but depends upon the layout of the kitchen/living room, so it is hard to say who is unreasonable here.
As for the rug, I have never seen one in the kitchen, but that
doesn't mean one can not be nice there, but as I sad everything depends on the layout.

Toomanycats99 · 02/01/2021 09:13

I had a large kitchen with a sofa at the end. It's great to sit down whilst you are cooking but don't want to be too far away!as you need to keep an eye on pans.

I think you need one with very simple lines not a big flouncy one! I went for the habitat Hyde.

I have actually refurbished the room now to make a whole lounge area in there at the end and I spend more time in there than the actual living room!

Recycled plastic rugs. I bought one from Angie Parker, a friend has a Weaver Green. They’re great - just hose them off and drip dry.

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/01/2021 09:13

YANBU at all. I’m sitting on mine right now drinking my coffee!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/01/2021 09:14

I’d have one like a shot if we had the space. A dd has one in her (admittedly extended) kitchen/diner - it’s lovely and very well used.

MrsClatterbuck · 02/01/2021 09:15

If I had the room I would certainly. I know people who do have them including my dsis.

Imissmoominmama · 02/01/2021 09:18

I have a sofa and a log burner- I spend most of my time in there!

Standrewsschool · 02/01/2021 09:20

Instead of a sofa, why don’t you get a snug chair or tub chair?

How big is the room?

If the space is large and there's an obvious area for a sofa, that's great. But I often see a sofa crammed in where it just looks odd and reminds me of student houses where the sitting room had been rented out as a bedroom.

Whatifitallgoesright · 02/01/2021 09:25

What's the objection? Does something of someone elses have to be moved to make room?

I agree, nice spot to sit down in-between jobs and while food cooking. If you do most of the cooking and shopping and cleaning the kitchen is your territory. Claim it.

movingonup20 · 02/01/2021 09:29

No I'm with them. Our kitchen is designed (by builders) as living kitchen dining (plus separate lounge elsewhere) and I've gone for a bigger table and more units over a sofa, I can't imagine wanting to sit (on a sofa) in a kitchen when there's a lovely living room, kitchens are for eating or perching whilst someone cooks (at same height thus)

daisypond · 02/01/2021 09:31

I have one. It’s leather, bought cheaply from John Lewis because they couldn’t find the legs. (I just bought some online.) Rug is from Ikea. It’s really nice. We deliberately opted to not to completely fill the kitchen part of the kitchen with cupboards and white goods to allow for a sofa.

SuperbGorgonzola · 02/01/2021 09:32

Personally I find a kitchen table better as it's another workspace; as well as somewhere to sit, write shopping lists etc. But if you've room for that and a sofa then go for it.

unchienandalusia · 02/01/2021 09:33

We have a sofa in the kitchen. Love it. Use it all the time.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/01/2021 09:36

A bit different here as we have a kitchen/diner but we have two 3-seater sofas in ours. I spend far more time in the kitchen than in the living room.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 02/01/2021 09:36

depends on the layout

Even if you haven't got a big room, but a space away from the food prep area, why not. You could even have a rug, no one is throwing food from one side of the kitchen to the other!

I wouldn't because kitchen are utility rooms for me, and the last place I would have guests or want to drink my coffee, but it's your home. If it makes you happy and you use it, why ever not.

Calmandmeasured1 · 02/01/2021 09:37

How much space would this take up in your "decent-sized but not massive" kitchen? Can we have an idea of sizes and layout?

Ooh, a diagram or photo would be good. Grin

ApplestheHare · 02/01/2021 09:39

YANBU

We have one and it's the most popular seat in the house!

HannaYeah · 02/01/2021 09:40

My Aunt has one and it’s awesome.
