AIBU to want a sofa in the kitchen!?

It’s not an open plan kitchen/diner or kitchen/living room - it is literally just a decent-sized but not massive kitchen. My family are protesting that sofas just don’t go in the kitchen but I think a little sofa and maybe a small coffee table in the corner would be a nice place to sit. Morning coffee, somewhere comfy for guests/family when someone is cooking and more out of the way than someone sitting at the island while it is covered in food prep etc. What about a rug? Do people have those in the kitchen? Again, my family say no but it would be way across the room from the cooking area.

Our kitchen is the nicest room in the house - not because it is particularly large or fancy, but because it faces the garden. We often think we could do without the living room- especially in summer - because we can do all our “living” in the kitchen.

Basically ignore your family and do what you want!

We have a sofa in our kitchen as dining room next door. We could have a table in the kitchen but prefer having a sofa

" rushes off to find tape measure to see if I can fit one in mine ....

We have a 2 seater grey velvet sofa in our kitchen. We always had an armchair there but upgraded it a while ago & we all absolutely love it! It's the most in demand seat in the house at times.
It suits our kitchen which is not built in. I wouldn't be without one now. We also have a table & chairs in the middle of the room too.

GreekOddess · 02/01/2021 13:30

What are the dimensions of your kitchen?

Dh wanted a sofa but I thought it would be too squished. We have comfy dining chairs instead. We spend most of the day in the kitchen and have a tv out there but it's just not big enough to take a sofa.

I have a two seater in our kitchen. Its a big L shape kitchen. The long rectangular shape is all the kitchen stuff and the square bit is where the patio doors are. I currently have the sette against the doors so the winter sun feels nice on my when I'm reading. I'm summer I move it to across the wall so the doors can be opened with easy access to the garden.
I love it. When I have friends round I will be in the living room with them and Dh will use that sette.
I love it!

We have a big chair. It's great.

LimitIsUp · 02/01/2021 14:52

Get one - not least because our flagging economy needs those who can afford it, to buy stuff

Anyway - lots of kitchens (those that are big enough) feature an informal seating area now

YANBU, though prepare for it to absorb cooking smells.

In bigger traditional farmhouse type kitchens there’d often be a settle or bench it similar, lots of posh people have big kitchens with a slightly moth eaten old sofa stuck at one end- if I had the space I’d do it, it’s nice company for the cook if people can stay and chat.

Fungster · 02/01/2021 14:57

We have a large kitchen which is L shaped. In the "foot" of the L we have a loveseat, armchair, bookcase and coffee table. We call it the "nook" and I probably spend more time here than anywhere else! This is the first house we've had where the kitchen has really been the "heart" of the home and I love it.

museumum · 02/01/2021 14:59

I’d rather a chair or two. People don’t tend to sit side by side on a sofa to chat so two chairs like IKEA poang are more practical.

Audreyseyebrows · 02/01/2021 15:04

We have a sofa. It’s nice to have a choice between sitting at the table or the sofa. The children spend lots of time sat there while I cook (so does the dog).

HannaYeah · 02/01/2021 15:06

In my Aunt’s kitchen during the holidays our older relatives would park there while she was cooking. It was so wonderful and much nicer than having them in the living room or else her in the kitchen alone.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/01/2021 15:09

Ot looks like a perfect space for a sofa. Just do it. Kids get no say, DH only gets a say if he takes over all the shopping/cooking etc AND it would prevent him having something there he wants.

VetiverAndLavender · 02/01/2021 15:12

I think it sounds very nice, if there's room for it. If you really want to be sure before spending the money, maybe you could do a test run with a chair/sofa you already have, if there's one in the right size that isn't too hard to move.

horseymum · 02/01/2021 15:14

Yes, we used to, not a massive kitchen either. We had a folding table we often folded down between meals so it never felt crowded. A two seater leather one.
