AIBU to want a sofa in the kitchen!?

It’s not an open plan kitchen/diner or kitchen/living room - it is literally just a decent-sized but not massive kitchen. My family are protesting that sofas just don’t go in the kitchen but I think a little sofa and maybe a small coffee table in the corner would be a nice place to sit. Morning coffee, somewhere comfy for guests/family when someone is cooking and more out of the way than someone sitting at the island while it is covered in food prep etc. What about a rug? Do people have those in the kitchen? Again, my family say no but it would be way across the room from the cooking area.

Our kitchen isn’t big enough for a sofa but we do have a garden sitting room just off it which is plenty close enough to keep an eye on cooking.

We have a cuddle chair type thing (sits 2 people that like each other), it's a square kitchen diner so it's more "immersed" in the kitchen next to the kitchen table than a rectangular room would be, though plenty of space for it.
It's my favourite spot in the house, DH is away at the moment and I find myself spending most evenings in there 😂 we have a TV and sky in there so it's so lovely to sit and watch Tv, the the dishwasher will finish so I potter over and do that. Great to sit there while waiting for things to cook, I thought the kids would use it more tbh but na they leave me be in the kitchen ha, fine by me!

LegoAndLolDolls · 02/01/2021 10:48

I have a kitchen diner and I want a sofa in there too. We have a table that sits six so it would have to go behind that and I'm not sure it would then be too low. So you would be peeking above the table.

But if you have room why not? It's your space for you to live in. It's not a show home for relatives Benefit.

Horriblyjealous · 02/01/2021 10:51

My dream is to have a kitchen big enough for a table and a sofa. If I had a separate dining room so no need for a table in there I’d definitely have a sofa and a tv!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 02/01/2021 10:53

I'd love a sofa in the kitchen! Unfortunately mine is a shoe box. I say go for it, I bet they'll all use it

Enko · 02/01/2021 11:11

We had a sofa in our old kitchen it was amazing and we spend a lot of time that way one cooking kids or adults on sofa :) DO IT

TooBored · 02/01/2021 11:19

Do it! We've only room for am arm chair but it's never empty.

LindaEllen · 02/01/2021 11:20

I think it sounds lovely, but then again I am a little bit obsessed with creating 'cosy corners' in my house, so if my kitchen was the right shape to allow this, I'd be all for it.

rothbury · 02/01/2021 11:20

I would much rather have a sofa in a kitchen than a naff island Grin

My parents had soft chairs in their kitchen, along with the dinning table and chairs, it's where we spent most of our time. It got to the point where the lounge was only used for "high days and holidays", or, on occasions, where private chats were held, as in if mum or dad were in the lounge with somebody (usually me), then they were not to be disturbed as some serious shit was going down. Another poster mentioned the WeaverGreen rugs and I second this - they look and feel just like wool but you can bung them in the washer every week! Best thing I ever bought!

Hi Op
A bit of cheecky question reply to your question.
Can you possible send a photo of your kitchen, so we get a better idea of how sofa would look like, fit in your kitchen space please?😕

I am still figuring out a reply to your question.

1lbperweek · 02/01/2021 11:28

I absolutely love those rugs @Twiddlet! Must get one when I have a nicer kitchen.

TheNoodlesIncident · 02/01/2021 11:32

I'd love that, but your kitchen looks large enough to accommodate a sofa without looking silly. You could make a really nice nook there, with a side table to put your cup on, and a shelf or rack for a few books...

(I must admit the one thing I've always wanted since childhood is a booth, like in an American diner. We stayed in a caravan on holiday once and it had a similar arrangement. They just look so cosy. Large enough table to do homework at, have meals on, or create stuff/projects, storage under the seats, what's not to like?! I don't have the kitchen to allow it unfortunately. Or a sofa. Bah.)

Totally do it, it will be great.

We have a small (wipeable) sofa in our kitchen diner, plus a small tv and I love it. On a normal work day I often don't set foot in my living room. It was supposed to be "my" sofa but the kids love it too and perch there to chat to me while I'm cooking. It's also really nice when we have friends round for dinner as they have somewhere comfy to sit and have a drink and chat to me while I'm getting food ready.

In some parts of Europe corner seating units (Essecke in German) are popular in kitchens

Usually bought from furniture shops, but a joiner can easily make to measure. Some are upholstered (as here) - others have separate loose cushions with washable covers.

Anyone who has the Weaver Green rugs could you say if they would work as back door mats? I have dogs...
OP go for the sofa in the kitchen, I have an armchair in mine and it gets a lot of use.. especially in lockdown when I want to zoom call my friends and DH wants to watch tv.

Hoppinggreen · 02/01/2021 11:40

We have and it’s lovely. I am sitting there right now

Oneearringlost · 02/01/2021 11:50

This is our comfy armchair. I love it, it adds comfort and character to a kitchen, but I compete for it with the dog..

@1lbperweek

Honestly, they are great! They also do sofa throws which have too. We just throw them all in the washing machine and they come out like new! If you spill anything on them, even the cream ones, there’s no need to panic!
Calmandmeasured1 · 02/01/2021 11:55

I think that it would be fine to put a sofa there and a rug. Go for it.

nixso29 · 02/01/2021 12:09

I have quite a large kitchen, no dining table as we have a breakfast bar big enough for 4 to eat at (only me and hubby at home)

I have a small leather corner sofa and love having it in here to sit with a cup of tea in the mornings as the kitchen is nice and bright, or somewhere close to sit while waiting for dinner to cook

Been toying with the idea of getting rid of the breakfast bar and sofa and getting a big dining table instead but I think I would miss my sofa too much! Plus whenever anyone comes to visit (pre-covid) they will all automatically make their way to the kitchen sofa even though we have two other living rooms to sit in!

justgeton · 02/01/2021 12:11

If you can sit looking out in to your garden, or something nice then def yes.

Otherwise prob not

Lightsontbut · 02/01/2021 12:32

I hate sofas wedged into kitchens which are really not big enough. If it's a genuinely massive room then why not though I would probably choose the lounge to sit in rather than the kitchen.

PicaK · 02/01/2021 13:10

I do it's lovely. I'd recommend one with legs as being able to see under it gives a much better look than a block of sofa.
I find I use it differently to the lounge sofa (ligged out watching TV). More magazine reading, phone reading, more upright.
So the homebase one is perfect.
