AIBU to want a sofa in the kitchen!?

It’s not an open plan kitchen/diner or kitchen/living room - it is literally just a decent-sized but not massive kitchen. My family are protesting that sofas just don’t go in the kitchen but I think a little sofa and maybe a small coffee table in the corner would be a nice place to sit. Morning coffee, somewhere comfy for guests/family when someone is cooking and more out of the way than someone sitting at the island while it is covered in food prep etc. What about a rug? Do people have those in the kitchen? Again, my family say no but it would be way across the room from the cooking area.

Get the sofa! We would love a sofa in our kitchen if it would fit. It will make it a more sociable area!

Boulshired · 02/01/2021 09:48

I had the kitchen diner style, there needs to be good ventilation and room for something comfy that you want to sit on rather than trying to find something just to fit a space. I had a leather sofa but eventually changed it to having expensive dining chairs with high backs and arms. As no one used the sofa.

We designed our extension to have a kitchen with a sofa it’s great! Or sitting room is now a kid free zone as they play in the kitchen family room and sit and watch tv in there x

KatherineOfGaunt · 02/01/2021 09:57

We have one and I love it, do it!

MadameMonk · 02/01/2021 09:58

Well, I’d think it depended a bit on the size of the space.

Squishy cushioned fabric sofa within splashing range of oils/ veggie juice / meat juice, with a rug that can’t be put in the washing machine or swabbed down? No way. It’d smell, be full of bacteria within days. Yuk.

Modern wipeable sofa with few nooks & crannies, a decent distance from any food prep (2mtrs plus?), and a similar rug? Go for it.

Ooh lots of replies!! Thanks everyone - interesting to see that lots of people do have a sofa. It’s not something I’ve seen in family/friend houses so I think that’s why my family are against it! I think if we do it once it’s there everyone will be fighting to sit on it.

@Whatifitallgoesright there is currently a somewhat long dodgy radiator on the wall that is going to be replaced with a vertical one on a different wall, freeing up the space.

@Calmandmeasured1 I’ve hopefully attached a (blurry!) floorplan and marked up where I want the sofa!

On the floor plan the space opposite where the sofa would go looks bigger than it is! It has a four step staircase leading to dining room and the bottom stairs block that space off making it much smaller than the other side so not big enough for sofa. Would like some cupboards or a sideboard there perhaps when we eventually get kitchen cupboards redone!

Nice to know that people do get good use out of them and don’t think it’s odd!

Standrewsschool where is that little sofa / blue armchair from, please?

I have an armchair in the corner of the kitchen and often a friend or teen offspring sits there while I am preparing something. Or I sit there with the back door open in summer. Our kitchen is a kitchen / diner.

SilentlyLaughing · 02/01/2021 10:02

We stayed in a self catering place that had a sofa in the kitchen. My concerns that it would stink of cooking were correct. We couldn’t sit on it as the smell enveloped you. It was refurbished at the beginning of the season so had only been there since Easter, we stayed in the July.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/01/2021 10:02

My fantasy kitchen has room for a sofa. It would make a nice cosy area to read in while food cooks. Lovely.

Dannydevitoiloveyourart · 02/01/2021 10:05

An old Victorian terrace I used to rent in London had one in the kitchen and it was the highlight of the house for me, guests and me housemates at the time.

We used it a lot- normally to sit and catch up on our days with each other while someone was cooking. Or to chill out in the morning with tea and a book.

I’ve never had a kitchen big enough to replicate that but if I did I would do it. It wasn’t a novelty and the sofa was well loved and used.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 02/01/2021 10:07

I don't see a problem with it. If you are the one who's going to sit on it, and your family aren't, then I think it should be your choice.

@AuntyFungal ooh those look gorgeous!

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/01/2021 10:08

Great link to the rugs @AuntyFungal. Added to my shopping list. I love the idea of repurposing plastic.

cathyandclare · 02/01/2021 10:09

We've always had a sofa in the kitchen, love it, it doesn't pick up kitchen smells but the room is big and drafty well-ventillated.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/01/2021 10:09

Not to my taste. I’d make your kitchen a dine in kitchen and put a big kitchen table and chairs there instead. Perfect for large projects or for children to do school work at.

Stifledlife · 02/01/2021 10:09

We have a leather sofa and a tv, and it's where everyone hangs out. It means the cook (me) doesn't get left alone like a relic from Upstairs Downstairs, and when the children were little it meant I could get on while they played.

Go for it.. it will extend the use of the room hugely!

Alyssasbackrolls · 02/01/2021 10:11

I've got one with a washable cover. It's well used! Bog standard three bed terrace so not a big kitchen by any means.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 02/01/2021 10:12

have a look on pinterest, there are loads of examples on smaller-ish kitchen (as opposed to the beautifully massive A-list Hollywood kitchen)

from sofa to more bench-types

you should find something your all family would like - or not but they don't have to sit in the kitchen if they don't want to

Recycled plastic rugs. I bought one from Angie Parker, a friend has a Weaver Green. They’re great - just hose them off and drip dry.

These are brilliant, thanks for recommending

Unless the space is a proper open plan plan kitchen dining living room, then no it doesn’t make sense to put a sofa in the kitchen.
It looks really odd and misplaced when a sofa is in the kitchen. The idea is to have it there if it’s one large living space.

saraclara · 02/01/2021 10:15

I'd love it. But I'd need a kitchen three times the size of mine. So I envy you your kitchen.

Boulshired · 02/01/2021 10:19

I would have two large armchairs in the corner just for eye contact as the sofa is facing a wall.

minipie · 02/01/2021 10:22

We now have open plan but previously we had a long kitchen diner with a sofa at the end. It was great for guests or kids to sit and chat while I cooked/pottered in the kitchen. I don’t see the issue.

Definitely get one with a removable washable cover if you can.

Cherrysoup · 02/01/2021 10:24

Go for it. Ours is split, half cooking area, half recliner opposite big flatscreen. It’s brilliant for cosy evenings snuggling with the throws. There are under unit lights which match the lights round the tv.

DressingGownofDoom · 02/01/2021 10:24

I remember when I was small my parents had a sitting area in the corner of the kitchen with a small two seater sofa and tv. Many happy hours spend sitting there watching telly while my mum cooked.

RichPetunia · 02/01/2021 10:32

Go for it! I’d love a sofa in my kitchen, but if I did that there’d be nowhere for my units 🤣(it’s that small).
